Watching this intro after the advent of Merobiba is a different experience.

Hey! Music student here! It is *very* difficult to do any of the things Julia was talking about without musical training! In much of the same way that very few people can just observe and then draw whatever perfectly. Here are some things I'd like to say on my soapbox/Julia Simp Platform: 1.1:13:10 Valid!!!!!! That's how we learn to sing and mimic pitch! It's like learning to draw basic shapes or spell words before you can draw or write. 2.1:13:17 Harmonizing *is* very difficult unless you've had training or were exposed to that kind of thinking early on. If someone tries to give you shit for that, they are an elitist asshole. 3. Fun fact! Singing up an octave is just singing the same notes higher and is usually the easiest interval to sing. Since it's the same notes it's not really harmonizing, but I do understand what Julia is saying here. With musical training, you can pick out harmonies like thirds and fifths which do create those "fancy tricks" you hear. It's very tough to even with music training, I'm an instrumentalist so I know the theory behind it and can play it but to sing it is difficult because I haven't had that much practice! 4.1:14:11 Jacob is absolutely right and I hate that people have been tricked into thinking singing/music is some magical talent you either have or not. 5. 1:15:54 Yes! Aural skills (ear training) is hard and makes you feel like a dumbass!!!! 6. 1:16:29 Perfect pitch (being able to tell what a note is without reference) is something that must be trained before the age of like 10 otherwise your brain just physically can't do it for the most part. Relative pitch is being able to find a note within the context and that is what is teachable. 7. 1:17:00 - 1:17:14 Hell yeah! Switching between melody lines is hard but then ALSO finding the pulse (strong beat you feel) for each line and accurately mimicking it? Takes practice!!!! I struggle with this too! 8. 1:17:49 !!!!!! I FOUND OUT WHERE THE ASSHOLE WAS. FUCKING VOCALISTS CAN BE SO ELITIST LIKE FUCKEN CALM DOWN BECKAH YOU'RE ANNOYING AND YOUR VOICE IS STUPID 9. 1:18:50 MUSIC IS HARD! Music is hard okay?! Everything about music needs to be learned! Reading tabs is easier than reading chords than reading sheet music but each is a skill!!! I was able to read sheet music before I could read chord sheets or tabs!!! Now I can do it because I had to learn how. PLUS! teaching yourself is hard!!! It depends on your instrument, teacher, and what you're learning! I had to have 11 years of music training to even get decent at music stuff like all this! 10. 1:19:00 YES JACOB!! Music is like a whole language!!! We can kind of talk about harmony and melody in the same way we use words like taco and rodeo but that's not learning Spanish. Thank you for standing up for Julia!!!! 11. 1:18:30 Can't believe Julia learned and played with THREE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS and still thinks she doesn't know anything about music. Breaks my heart 12. 1:19:37 I forgot Julia was deaf for a while! That makes her even more amazing! Music development begins very early on in the brain! It works with language centers and around them. I'm studying to be a music therapist and we will use MT to help stroke patients relearn how to speak because singing and humming are such fundamental parts of our brains! SO Julia learned THREE INSTRUMENTS and can stay on pitch (from other VODS I've seen) AND come up with little silly songs to sing and she missed some of those fundamental years of music learning???? AMAZING. I LOVE HER. IF ANYTHING SHE *HAS* INHERENT MUSICAL SENSE 13. "Music and language are my weak spots" LHFLJDSHFJAHJDHSAJFA JULIA YOU COULDN'T HEAR OF COURSE YOU WOULD STRUGGLE I LOVE YOU GHDGFSSFSGFSF ANYONE CAN SING THAT'S THE HILL I WILL DIE ON

Julia, if you were D/deaf during the developmental years where hearing kids start to pick up aural and musical fluency of course it would be harder for you to pick up those musical things but that doesn’t mean you can’t if you wanna learn! I’m in my late 20s and my handwriting is still pretty scruffy because I was blind in one eye when I learnt to write and I’m an English teacher. I’m also now teaching myself to draw but my line confidence is terrible because my hand eye coordination is still pretty bad and it’s super frustrating so I definitely feel ya. But if you wanted to learn music you should give it a go just understand that your processing probably isn’t as fast as people who were hearing since birth and that’s totally understandable. Be kind to yourself because you’re a really cool person.

Speaking of weird medieval art, the reason babies looked so ugly is because artists depicting baby Jesus wanted him to look wise and almost fully formed from straight out of the womb. Hence why he has hair, teeth, a grown man’s face, and is depicted as being generally more sentient than a wauling newborn. This just eventually became the standard of all depictions of babies.

I found Julia's description of her struggle with following rhythm and learning languages so fascinating. There is a research group at Northerstern University lead by Nina Kraus that studies this, specifically. Very simply, she's found that those who have a better sense of rhythm and beat tend to do better at learning new languages (especially in early childhood). That's not to say these skills are completely innate and can't be built upon, but stresses the importance of music during early learning. Her lab's web page has great videos and blurbs on this topic!

music is weird, ive never studied singing and im for sure Not a vocalist, but i like to sing along with songs i like. i cant explain harmonies or tell you which one would sound good, but i can kind of intuitively sing harmonies with songs ive never heard before. my mum and grandmother do this too, i dont have perfect pitch by any means, im in a music theory class and i literally cannot read notes on staves. i dont know what my brains doing

Brave was my favourite Disney movie for ages so it’s really close to my heart (though I’ll admit it’s not exactly perfect). It was usurped when I watched moana. 1:43:00 - Considering this was streamed in August this is probably useless advice by now. :p But maybe it's helpful to others. The best/fastest way to move _LARGE_ files or amounts of data. Is to put it on a hard drive, and ship it through the good ol' fashioned mail. Google Drive or Dropbox is fun and all. But if you're trying to move like 2.5TB of video editing data. Stick it on an SSD and ship it as a package.
