Stephanie Meyer changed Long Haired Jacob's personality in a 180 because by writing him organically, he was becoming a better option for Bella. *Clearly*. So therefore as Meyer wanted Bella to get with Edward all along, she decided to destroy Jacob's character to make Edward the 'obvious' choice. Essentially.. characters were evolving in a direction she didn't originally intend, so she decided to stunt and destroy one character's growth to force her originally intended ending to happen.

Of course she wanted Edward and Bella were together. However, I don’t think she destroyed his character to make Edward seem better. Becoming a werewolf heightened all of his emotions, we kind of see that werewolves can’t control their anger and such. I think his personality was always going to change just because of the whole werewolf thing.

@@laledi Yeah, people don't understand that. They always complain that his personality changed, but don't pay enough attention to the story to realize that this change was explained in the story. Becoming a werewolf makes it harder to control their emotions. Even before he changed, you can see it when he threatend Mike at the movie theater. To quote Jacob, it's a werewolf thing.

I kinda wish jacob was less of a r/niceguy and was more characterised as a rebel to his tribe, making him the cliched lone wolf type. jacob is one of my favorite characters from twilight when removing all the problematic parts of his character. i wish imprinting wasn't so focused on romance and grooming and that it was souly for protection and that jacob didn't explain it correctly to bella. i think twilight shines less in the romance aspect of the plot and more of the political drama between the vampires and werewolfs, i wish that aspect was played up more my stephanie meyer because what she's written for that aspect is good. also yes, long hair jacob

I whole heartedly agree, except maybe for the term nice guy. I’ve never really appreciated the association with nice as negative. Not that I don’t recognize it’s reference to a toxic individual as opposed to genuine niceness, I just don’t like the terminology. Jacob always was and still is one of my favourite characters as well. Twilight in general had a lot of wasted potential. Jacob as the Lone Wolf makes a lot more sense. He generally pushed the boundaries of his tribe/packs rules & beliefs. Such as rejecting leadership, not following orders and choosing to desert the pack all together. I feel like expanding his POV into a full story as opposed to a few chapters, and giving him more development would really do him justice. I remember enjoying the slow building friendship, albeit vitriolic, between him & Rosalee. If Emmett, who while a fun comic relief, felt very flat & pointless to me, wasn’t in the picture. I wouldn’t of minded seeing something between the two of them. Especially after character development on both their parts and serious distance from the Cullens & the Pack. Plus like you mentioned, I found the dynamics between the opposing supernatural beings far more interesting than the romance. I would’ve loved to see a spin off with Jacob leaving to go find himself. Maybe introduce the other more classic Werewolves that were alluded to near the end of Breaking Dawn. From what I recall the Children of the Moon were Lone Wolves as well. Seeing him interact and grow with a society more suited to his personality, wants, and needs would be nice. Or even a twist of him being related to them on his absent mother’s side. Just more, anything more than what we got. Jacob deserved that as a character. Yes to the long hair, aside from the fact that Jacob looked better, and he was a far better character with it. It’s worse when you consider the importance of hair in Native American culture. It’s related to their connection to the spirit world if I’m not mistaken. And generally is only cut out of grief of a loss. Cutting it in essence stunts ones connection to their spirituality, which perfectly frames his personality shift to a negative light. Plus, the whole it’s length is relative to the length of their fur makes less sense given their ancestors never being shown or described as cutting it. Nor does the imprinting. Anger relates to the Chiefs anger at his peoples pain. The desire for protecting against a threat as a trigger being similar. Body heat could be related to two souls sharing a singular body. Telepathy was shared while in Spirit Form. But where in their origins does imprinting make any sense. I can’t see any basis. Maybe some combination of Wolves mating for life, and shapeshifting being an equivalent of their spirit forms. And wolves mating for life, their instinctive loyalty could explain his inability to move on from Bella. But it should’ve been an explicit, internal conflict that gets recognized & overcome. To ignore it is to totally ignore his original character & personality as long haired Jacob. Even then, none of that justifies Jacob imprinting on Renesme or Quil imprinting on a 2 year old Claire. Imprinting is far from necessary in the plot, and whatever editor, or green lighter in charge seriously messed up for approving it. All in all, thanks for the wonderful & like-minded thoughts.

@@johnathangrey2003 This summed up all of my opinions on jacob and then some. i totally forgot about the importance that hair has in native american culture. i might have to write a fanfic about jacob joining the children of the moon becasue that's a great idea but i haven't finished the books yet and dont know much about native culture to write about it and would feel awful getting anything wrong. in my idea fantasy of twilight imprinting doesnt exist anywhere and is souly focused on the fight between two opposing supernatural beings with jacob being the outlier to the other werewolfs. you can even have his hair grow out while the other werewolfs have it short to show that he isnt like them.
@johnathangrey2003
@johnathangrey2003 3 года назад
@AstroAstroAstro Oh, thank you. You and Overkill Analysis did for me as well, and it was a refreshing & thoughtful change of pace to what I usual read/hear from other people’s perspectives on Jacob. The importance of hair in Native American culture isn’t very common knowledge. The only reason I was aware, and probably butchered my explanation, was because of research for a book I’m working on. A fanfic about that would be awesome, I’d definitely love to read it. I’m sure once you finish the books, and with a bit of research you’d be more than talented enough to write it. I’m not aware of where you are, my apologies for spoilers. The Children of the Moon were such an interesting concept and they actually were brought up to clarify that the Quileutes, while similar to Werewolves. Were more along the lines of Shapeshifters who transform into Wolves as opposed to the Children of the Moon who were the true Werewolves. And we’re actually central to the Vampire & Werewolf conflicts, which because of similarities led to the association with Quileutes being treated similarly by Vampires. The Volturi and Vampire laws dictating the eradication & genocide of Werewolves. The opposing war between the supernatural beings is the best part and needs more focus. I’m glad your idea focuses on it. It’s one of the aspects of the Underworld Series I liked. Although where Meyer got fixated on romance, Underworld got fixated on action. Again wasted potential for characters, especially Lucian, another lone wolf Werewolf. It’s funny that you mentioned Jacob growing out his hair. One of the minor points not shown in the movies is Jacob does grow his hair back out a bit. Not fully. But instead of relating it to himself & character growth, it’s because Bella liked his hair longer. More tying his character down to a protagonist who really wasn’t a good person in his life. But it’s a very good idea for juxtaposition and contrasting him against the other wolves. Colours are also good for that, I liked the idea of their fur reflecting their inner self. Sams very black & white in terms of morality, so his furs jet black. Jacobs russet, a mixture of red & brown so symbolically he’s more down to earth yet driven by his heart, creating a struggle.

community is extremely important in indigenous cultures so i disagree with the lone wolf part, i just wish the whole tribe themselves weren't demonized throughout the whole series bc they wanted the cullens to respect their treaty and their lands. the cullens literally were OG colonizers and broke the treaty multiple times and yet they were still seen as the good guys??? jacob was fine as a character until after new moon and then he was forcefully put into so many different stereotypes its so disgusting. im not even gonna get into the whole discussion about how comparing natives to animals thing is racist bc theres too much lol. the way smeyer handled the quileute ppl and their legends as well as her own native characters was so horribly done its almost laughable.

You know who else deserved better in the Twilight series, Leah. Out of all the characters, male and female, she got the worst ending. She’s the first and only female werewolf, which isolated her from her own pack. She was in love with Sam but was rejected due to him imprinting on Emily instead. It didn’t help that Emily is her cousin. Because werewolves share a hive mind, she couldn’t think about her “woman problems” or else it would make the other men uncomfortable. She also has to listen to the other werewolves insulting her behind her back for being rejected and Sam being in a happy relationship with someone else. Did I forget to mention that her dad died of a heart attack when he saw her transform for the first time? If that wasn’t bad enough, her werewolf powers also made her infertile. In the books, Jacob’s dad explains that imprinting is a biological tool that helps werewolves determine which woman would most likely produce werewolf offspring. Thus, everyone concludes that Sam didn’t imprint on Leah because she’s a genetic dead end. To top it all off, Leha wasn’t allowed to leave since she was responsible for her little brother and Sam, the alpha, wouldn’t allow it. There’s a lot of transphobic subtext on Leah. The other characters, including Jacob, treat her like she’s some kind of freak and not a real woman due to her infertility. She’s also seen as less feminine due to her werewolf aggression, taller and more muscular stature, and more rugged facial features. In contrast, Bella is soft, more gentle, cleaner, non-confrontational, and can get pregnant. Also, Bella is seen as more feminine and attractive due to her white skin. Rosalie was also seen as inferior to Bella since she was also aggressive and jealous over the fact that she couldn’t have babies. However, she got more of a pass since she eventually warmed up to Bella, was protective during her pregnancy, and still rich and white. Finally, Bella is placed on an even bigger pedestal since she got the best of both worlds. She was able to get pregnant and be a badass vampire of her own free will. If I cared enough about Twilight, I’d write a fanfiction about Leha breaking away from the pack permanently and becoming her own alpha. She could lead a pack of werewolves who were abandoned and or mistreated by their old packs. How cool would it have been if she could fulfill the void in her heart by being the protector and mother to hundreds of lost werewolves? That’s the ending Leah deserves. P.S. The fact that Leah was the first and the only female werewolf made no sense. That was even more stupid than when the Cullen’s just discovered that vampires could impregnate non-vampire women. Vampires can be male or female, so why are werewolves only a male thing? Also, am I the only one who thinks it’s unfair how the male monsters were allowed to pass on their genes, but female monsters couldn’t? It’s almost like Meyer was trying to say that male monsters are the pinnacle of masculinity since they embody all the traits that society values in men: aggression, strength, loyalty, unconditional love, and protectiveness. Whereas female monsters are seen as abominations since they’re the opposite of what a woman should be.

I think not only was Stephenie Meyer’s depiction of Jacob terrible, it played on a lot of native stereotypes. You see natives portrayed as violent savages that are aggressive and mean. The physical manifestation of this is the scar that Emily has from Sam. Not to mention the cutting of the packs hair. You also see the trope that native men are constantly pining over white women. books about native men kidnapping white women or giving up their tribe to be with a white woman. It plays up so many of these stereotypes.

From a guy's perspective, Jacob's story is allegorical of a lot of the male-female dynamics that happen regularly in the world today. Guy likes girl, girl just likes him as a friend, guy doesn't want to lose girl and sticks around so girl gets her friend and guy gets to live in constant hope and, probably disappointment over never having the opportunity to be more to her than just her friend.

I hated what they did with Jacob. When I read Twilight the first time in tenth grade I had a couple friends super into Edward but I was always team Jacob. Mainly because Edward was a creepy stalker who blew hot and cold and had major control issues while in New Moon Jacob is friendly, warm, gives Bella space while always welcoming her back and their interactions seem more like they genuinely like each other as opposed to this irresistible draw. Then in Eclipse she makes him super angry, and manipulative, and then he's a groomer by the last book. One of the worst parts is that Meyer wrote into his dialogue how much he hated imprinting and didn't want it to happen to him. He says he fell in love with Bella because of who she is, in control of his own emotions, and he didn't want to just be unnaturally compelled to be with a person he didn't choose, and have his feeling that have defined so much of who he is, just taken away or artificially implanted. He wanted to fall in love for real, on his own terms. Having him imprint takes away so much of his journey as a character, and saying he only loved Bella because she was going to be the mother of his 'one true love' makes everything else he did in the series meaningless. It's the worst way to write a character.

I think that Jacob's character as a concept is interesting. Yes he is impulsive and aggressive but part of that was obviously because he was going through the stages of becoming a werewolf. If Stephanie had explored the concept of werewolves more then that might have been more clear. Personally I think it makes his character more interesting. He's this impulsive, angry dude who cares deeply for his childhood friend but goes about it in all the wrong ways because of his lack of control in emotions. They should have resolved his flaws better and I still think imprinting was important to the story but for God's sake he should NOT have imprinted on renesme. They should have just put another character in and have him imprint on her. Jacob, the werewolves, and the tribe was to me far more interesting then anything else about Twilight. No offense obviously, but that's just my take. I really only watch Twilight for the werewolf and Jacob stuff lol. I am not team Jacob persay, but I do prefer him as a character.

Jacob was a very cool foil for Edward. He was rash and hot headed and impulsive, and that made for a fun contrast to Edward, who tried to be cool and polite. THat worked better as a rival for Edward over the nicer long haired Jake. When you have romantic rivals in vampire fiction, you alway need the darker brooding emo charcter (ie Edward or Stephan or Angel) to contrast against the more hot headed jerky one ((Jake or Damon or Spike). That said, as fun as the newer Jacob was, I did think they took him TOO far at times. He flat out sexually assaults Bella in Eclipse. There was no reason to him to go that far if Bella was just going to forgive him the next time she saw him anyways. The movie at least toned down Jacob a little, but he even there it probably wasn't quite enough. I'm actually hoping if/when Meyers returns to the world of Twilight Jacob and Nessie can be the main characters. I think Jacob needs a better ending than the one we got.

It was on the reread that I struggled with all the unhealthy relationships romantic and other wise. Then a couple years after that I read again and realized just how messed up it was that the POC were made into the rage monsters unable to control themselves both in anger, violence, and attraction? Then a few years more I found out the tribe Id always believed were made up, were not! The Quileute tribe was not imagined by her. They are a real people she took and fit into a fictional mold to suit her needs. While there were a lot of ways the character was failed I feel the worse was the lack of respect shown for the people and heritage he was declared to "be inspired" by.

Meyers thought if he had a partner, any partner, it would mean a happy ending.... No! I love Jacob and as a tween I was Team Jacob (not saying that I liked Bella with Jacob, just that if I was inside that universe, I rather be with him than Edward). Then his character was just forgotten and Meyers clearly didn't knew what to do with him. I think the love triangle destroy him. He could had been a friend all this time. He hated vampires and finding out Bella, whom he cares so much, wanted to be one means that in the future he'll have to fight or kill her because of the natural rivalry. That must had sucked for him and I rather she left it as that! Not just a romantic side thingy or whatever. It would be a better progression of his character to see Jacob accepting Bella no matter her decisions; whether she's with Edward or not or whether she's a vampire or not. It will get rid of his bias towards vampires through character growth than through a simple "Jacob whole world was Bella and his only personality" Sucks that thanks to Meyers writing many don't like or even hate Jacob... I still like him but I'm hopeful for a rewrite of the series fixing all the issues the OG has

I think the imprinting thing is so shocking most forget about the baby murder part, but that was pretty messed up. I get you sort of have to sweep bad behavior under the carpet when you watch Twilight but Jacob sort of pushed things too far towards the end. If they ever do a Twilight remake hopefully they tone some of this down.

Twilight would've been so much more interesting if it followed Jacob, Alice, Jasper, Seth, Leah and Sam they are all interesting characters with a lot of potential but they were all wasted. Jacob and Leah should've gotten together and been the main characters.

1) Long-haired Jacob - totally agree the long hair was WAY better 2) As far as a remake - I'd want to see a re-imagining of the story from Jacob's perspective. That could give us a chance to change some of the things that we didn't like. For example - maybe there's some ritual hair-braiding instead of cutting the hair off. Maybe instead of "imprinting" on Renesme, they treat it more like - he's able to truly see Bella as a beloved sister, and that naturally extends to her child, and it manifests in an intense way since we've already established that werewolves are pretty intense. Just some quick thoughts.

I have read the books and especially if you look at new moon. The way he is portrayed in the movie verses in the books so different. When reading New Moon I saw Jacob as this really good friend with maybe a little anger issues but that's beyond his control and that he had feelings for Bella but in the book, he was understanding and actually acknowledged that he knew she wasn't that into him. However, in the movies, he is just an asshole which is why I get some people to hate him. If you read the books wallah it's so different.

I love Jacob. A lot of that is due to like me being in early middle school when I first got into the series and having a huge crush on Taylor Lautner. Getting back into the series last summer and finally fully reading the books just made me so sad for him. He really was screwed over and made this asshole character. Like he was an asshole and had a lot of problems, but Stephanie Meyer could have idk let him have some character growth cause he still technically a high schooler. Like also the whole imprinting on a child thing literally disgusted me and I literally can not finish the last book because of it. I love all the wolves. why did Stephanie Meyer have to make it like "normal" for them to imprint on literal children and then spend time with them until they grow up to a legal age its disgusting. Also apparently we are supposed to get a book from Jacob's perspective, but its supposed to be about him and renesme and god it makes me so angry. Literally no one liked that so why make a whole book about it? I really wish we could get New Moon from his perspective where he is dealing and coming to terms with turning into a wolf.

This is what I think. I understand of course why people see it as grooming, and it absolutely would be IRL. As it's basically someone hovering around a child until they're "of age." But I think we need to remember this isn't the real world, it's a world with magic. That they have soulmates, people they're TRULY meant to be with. Rather than it being a romantic or sexual connection necessarily, it's a soul connection. So they're bonded to that person no matter what, even it it's just as a "brother" or a protector. And they aren't physically attracted to the child. There's no type of real relationships we can relate to it, and trying to imagine the dynamics in the real world are what make it sound creepier. Personally I liked the idea of imprinting, as I thought it was neat to imagine someone meant to be your soulmate, and bonded to you in a truly magical way.
@Captain_Effy
@Captain_Effy 3 года назад
@@shaloc I'm sorry, but I disagree. The whole "this isn't our world" argument doesnt fly because twilight wasn't created in a vaccum. Smeyer intentionally, continuously and with full of awareness wrote a problematic, racist, pedophilic and racist storyline for no reason, inspired by her world view. To have people of colour, in this case native american men, be predatory to little girls: Quil and a 6 years old, Sam stalking and mutilating Emily until she said yes, Paul imprinting on Jacob's sister and now Jacob with Renesmée. All of these are a pattern of a white woman writing and portraying men of color as aggressive, abusif, grooming and predatory. Not once, but multiple times. This wasn't a mistake compared to the oh so perfect Cullens who are all white. The misogyny in twilight is rampant. Everyone from Leah Clearwater to Rosalie Hale, but let's focus on just imprinting. Grown MoC have an uncontrollable urge to force a connection with unaware woman who are just living their lives. Emily just existed and came to visit her cousin Leah, before Sam started stalking her, pleading with her that they are soulmates and almost attempted suicide if she didn't drop her entire life and give up her agency to be with him, and then he lost it, mutilated her face. Imagine, you're a woman who just existed and suddenly you are stalked and pressured by some random dude that you are soulmates, you try to get away and next thing you know you wake up in a hospital with traumatic life changing injuries and your self-esteem shot! Who could ever love you now? Oh wait the stalker who claims to be your soulmate. Rinse and repeat with Jacob's sister. Rinse and repeat with Jacob sexually assaulting Bella and threatening to kill himself because she didn't choose him cuz he felt the "pull" with her. But let's make it easier, we can't brutalize all woman, let's just groom them. Quil and his 6 years old child bride and Jacob x Resnesmée. It didn't have to be like this. It could have been consensual, Smeyer as a writer chose to depict men of color in a harmful trope of them being aggressive and predatory in a world where hollywood consistently depict men of color in such a way, especially compared to their white counterparts. The stealing of agency and sexism towards almost all woman in twilight,is also a choice. Bella, Esmé, Rosalie, Leah Clearwater, Alice, Bree Tanner etc... All experienced abuse and/or sexism from the men in their lives for no reason other then because Smeyer is a shit writer who cant do better then put woman and MoC in terrible positions to advance her plot. Her child grooming is just the cherry on top of the cake. Smeyer wanted to depict the sexualization of a child and so she did. If you own the books, go read the passage where Bella describes Renesmée and how she compares a TODDLER'S body to a sexy adult. Everything from her hips to her hair. Smeyer, deliberately and soberly, with no outside force, CHOSE to write an entire passage sexualizing a toddler...

It is a friendship / older brother relationship. Just eventually BECAUSE RENEESME wants it will become something else. Jacob is there to be wherever SHE NEEDS and if that is a brother or a friend that's it. But if it is something else is gonna be that too. Not because of his choice, but for her's.

The worst part is these movies fall make this boring, average looking white woman the only woman the indigenous character would ever want. Even if that means perking on her baby. These are the dumbest movies. They are slow and the acting is horrible. I saw half of the first one and I’ll never get that time back. So while this is a good analysis, I don’t expect anything better.
@dekuquan7010
@dekuquan7010 Год назад
I don't wanna be rude but for a channel called overkill analysis u got several things wrong or left out key details. Jacob didn't only try to save bella bcuz he loved her, ofc that was a big part and who wouldn't, but he's literally a werewolf and they're job is to protect humans. Ofc he'd try to change her mind from turning into a creature he's wired to hate/kill. The way he went about it was wrong but he's 16. Imprint is: involuntary, something Jacob did not want, does not erase his feelings for bella bcuz said predate him turning into a wolf(sam imprinted on Emily but that didn't erase his feelings for Leah who he was with before). This whole "he was attracted to her egg" thing makes no sense bcuz of what I previously said but also bcuz bella didn't have her kid a$exually, it's half Edward too. Jacob also isn't attracted to her and he never implies that or talks being with her in the future, why they made him say that stuff in the films idk but in the books it's ALWAYS EDWARD OR BELLA. Speaking of the future, Alice cannot see visions of Jacob and Reneesme cuz 1) she can't see werewolfs, she literally says that in New moon and 2) they way her powers work she can't see things she's never been, she's never been a wolf or a hybrid so she wouldn't be able to see either of them. THE BIGGEST thing u left out tho was the blatant raycyst tropes Stephanie uses for Jacob, the whole brown man being aggressive by nature and having the capacity to, unintentionally, hurt the white woman he loves thing but also the way edward (the white knight) is the same way, he can hurt bella just as much and more so cuz he literally wants to eat her yet he goes out of his way to force proximity to her but he isn't framed negatively for it. This raycyst trope is especially clear cuz the way it literally breaks canon to paint Jacob and wolves negatively even tho their whole existence is to protect humans so why'd they have his uncontrollable rage that makes them liable to hurt them?

Back when I was 11/12, and was into the series (I’m a guy, so that’s saying something), my 12/13 year old girlfriend was team Jacob, and I liked him too! He had a good set up, and he could have gone far! But that’s not what Meyer wanted. And worst of all, she ruined Charlie along with him. I’m no twihard by any means (I’d say if you want my opinion of the series, go watch KrimsonRogues review of the series). But I feel like fans were done dirty when it came to Jacob, and the series as a whole.
