It's honestly kinda scary how effortless all of this is for him. The crowd cheers like crazy for that vocal run about halfway through the video, but the complexity of his bass comping paired with his vocals in the first half of the song is utterly ridiculous, and he does it without breaking a sweat.
@BrianMassa
@BrianMassa 7 лет назад
Yup, thank you. Absolutely out of this world. He taps the bass and harmonizes right before the run. Epitome of pure genius. Anyone who throws shade just has a big stick up their ass they haven't been practicing lololol

I love it when he takes a well known song and “fucks it up”. The recognition of the original gives you an immediate connection so that he can do basically ANYTHING harmonically and rythmically and you are just in awe. With original compositions, the genius is still there but so much less recognizable because for me, it lacks the basic understanding you get from “i see what he did there”. His original compositions are, in other words, way “over my head”, I need a fundament.
@bigjohn1777
@bigjohn1777 6 лет назад
Jacob Collier's music is always jam-packed with such a soulful groove, evoking a true raw emotion with a deep sense of musicianship. This performance brings so much life to the lyrics of the original song. I first heard about Collier a year ago from a teacher of mine. His music is not only accessible, sounds wonderful, but is also all-round enjoyable to listen to. From time to time I check out his recordings and sit back and listen. Inspirational!

Jacob Collier's music is fucking insane. Its not even good. Nor is it bad. Its just insane.
@palacerevolution2000
@palacerevolution2000 6 лет назад
Yes Ethan. That is where I arrived at too. It's not even good, really. It is very much. Every bar of that section of bass lines with vox could be talked about. The beat alone is superb. But in converse with him. or listening to music he is almost too much. What happens often with guys like this is they can't write. You see most of his output is covers. His ear is scary, literally. That pitch is insane. I wonder if time will allow him to absorb all of this in some way where he is able to write something simple an ethereal.
@metashrew
@metashrew 6 лет назад
Just to make sure: you're saying that Jacob won't be able to write a simple song because he likes pushing the limit of music to the point that it might not even sound good? Because if that's the case, then I think that a song like "In The Real Early Morning" is a good example of a song where he uses his knowledge to convey the emotions of the story in the best way possible. Jacob is capable of making stuff that doesn't sound "bad", but he also wants to keep learning and discovering new things.

It's not unemotional, as that's just purely an opinion. It is just so different and so complex for basically any normal ear that it doesn't click the same way as it does for him. It might not exactly make sense but his ears hear things a lot differently than a large majority (99%). I do not necessarily find it to be the most appealing to my ear always, not to say I don't enjoy it, but it is not exactly something I would choose to listen to everyday. Though, maybe the more I listened, the more I would understand and therefore like it more. But he is no doubt skillful beyond comprehension, there is absolutely no argument there.

Now I’m fine with people disliking Jacob’s sound so long as they respect his genius, love and understanding of music but...one thing I absolutely can’t stand is when people say he has sacrificed emotion for technicality, people that say this have no idea how wrong they are. Emotion isn’t any one feeling and hence it isn’t any one kind of expression. Just because his expression is different from what you would deem “emotional” doesn’t mean his performances aren’t slapped with it. Idk about all these people but I can honestly feel the emotion OOZING out of every note, the pure joy in his face, the technical and musical freedom is unreal. It definitely took a while for me to understand and appreciate how amazing this man is. Like many others I respected his understanding of music more than his execution, but I would soon come to realise that you can’t approach this man’s music the same way you would approach any music before it, it’s DIFFERENT, so people have no idea how to respond, that’s the joy of his music, how we respond is often entirely new and that’s scary. Jacob is a bloody GENIUS full of emotion and if you can’t feel it you’re just not open to it

The more I read some of these comments, the more upset I become. I'm talking about those of you who concede he is "technically brilliant" but think he is either emotionless, indifferent to his audience, or making things more complicated than necessary. WRONG. He plays with so much visceral passion, his compositions or improvisations overflow with emotional chords, he often engages and works his audience (especially in a live concert), and he expresses a vital part of music that isn't often heard -- one that is highly thoughtful, and works wonders for sensitive, musical people. Some of you are the same people who will champion predictable radio-friendly tunes, demand that performers play to the gallery, or use your paltry knowledge in music theory to gauge the worth of true musicians. While some of them turn "mainstream" for your sake, we seriously don't need another bubblegum popstar. There's plenty of that as it is. We urgently need a different voice, and I am so glad to have discovered Jacob Collier, a one-of-a-kind musician of this century. I beseech him never to change his vision and style just to cater to the masses. Amadeus, anyone?

I guess that most of people that kind think that the only time artist is emotional is when he's shouting. Maybe its because of rockstar image with its primitive way of being on stage.

Man this is pure musicality. Not preformated shit made to satisfy. This is genuine, true, absolute musicianship, not only playing with theoretical rules as he pleases, but taking you to places you never been before in a groovy, catchy piece he plays almost naked, so to speak. People consume music as they want it to be nowadays when they should use it to go places they never experienced before. Music is firstly a language but now it has found itself a vessel in Jacob's body and soul for us to understand what it has to offer. Hats down to this genius for the gift.

To those bashing this for being too simple or catering to an audience that can’t understand what he’s doing,, watch June Lee’s transcription of this song. It’s not rocket science, but it’s very precise. He’s not just playing around in this song, he’s using complex rhythms and harmonic devices to make this sound the way it does, without being too overwhelming. In other words, he makes music math sound pleasant and easy and I applaud him for that, I mean most music that I make using devices I learned in Harmony and theory doesn’t sound this smooth, it sounds like I did just that: learned it in music theory. Idk guys give him more credit

The majority of people don't know, or even care to understand music theory. This gentleman is beyond talented. A virtuoso? I don't think so. He sees music like most of see the answer to a simple math problem. It's remarkable, but it will never catch on. Only music aficionados will truly respect his ability. He'll rise within that elite community. Most of us will just be amazed by his ability to play any instrument and sing well. His music is too complex for most to appreciate. It's really sad. He's creating amazingly complex music, but people rather hear a simple song with 3 chords. Simple rhythm. Verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus structure. With lyrics that a 3rd grader can comprehend. I love music. I'm learning theory. Jacob is light years ahead of me. Unfortunately for me, his music doesn't give me the tingles like other music does. Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Radiohead, Dire Straights, Chicago or a ridiculous Jerry Garcia guitar solo gets me going. I hope Jacob stays out of the mainstream and continues to share music that makes him genuinely smile. That's all that matters.

Dingo this isn’t complex though, it may be my uprising in the jazz scene but at the end of the day his format is normal and the chord progression as well as the scales and modes used don’t bring a level of complexion that is hard to understand.

Many of us who love "simple" (non-jazzy) well-played and produced music (rock, pop, blues, etc.) *DO* like complexity too, but more in the realm of something that makes you really feel, like the classical beauty of Beethoven and Bach. That music is complex AND beautiful, but rarely discovered by teens into adulthood. This more mainstream and modern jazz stuff, while technically proficient, is utterly cold and, at times, spastic and too atonal to feel amazingly emotional. Ps. Pink Floyd is beautifully intense, imo. :)

Thanks for this! A wonderful jazz interpretation of the Carpenters hit. Looking at many of the comments, however, I get the sense it should have be subtitled "Warning! Modern jazz cut with bebop interpretation of pop song - if these things leave you cold or confuse you, don't waste your time!" That way there would be less opining by confused people expecting it to sound emotional as it might if done in another musical genre's style or idiom.

I'm genuinely surprised at all the people saying the emotion is somehow lost in the complexity of the music. I mean that makes no fucking sense first of all, but how? This seems so much more emotional and passionate than a ton of mainstream music I hear.
@betterbelle29
@betterbelle29 4 года назад
Jacob prides himself on his music being emotional and on how you should focus on the story your music is telling. It's quite strange seeing people say it lacks it. I'll admit this arrangement I found a bit on the boring side but literally everything else I've found on him he's so energetic and emotional. It's impressively technical and emotionally moving to see.
