It's entertainment, and certainly a novel approach but I think a bit silly to send someone like him in a different class with absolutely nothing in common with these people and probably the type of person who reinforces the stereo-type image of Conservatives being the party of the rich. They'd be better off sending MP's from other working class areas and backgrounds, and showing data on historical performance of Labour v Conservative in their constituency.
@paullangton-rogers2390
@paullangton-rogers2390 7 лет назад
Nick Nack True. The community there is mixed and some clearly support Conservatives and other parties, but they're definitely a minority. He was going on an exploration mission with an open mind I guess to find out why. However, the demographics and history of the place tells you everything you need to know and what you're up against, on paper really. I think it was more a news publicity stunt, or PR exercise by the Conservatives. This guy to his credit though, is trying to involve ordinary working class people more in politics all the time with his TV appearances etc, and wants people to be more involved in the running of the country, which is definitely a good thing in the age of social media where voters should have more involvement and say in how things are run. Labour only show up when they want your vote. Then are happy for you to remain silent and let them take all the decisions.
@paullangton-rogers2390
@paullangton-rogers2390 7 лет назад
Nick Nack Me either, they leaflet my area but that's all, they don't bother knocking the door. UKIP and Lib Dem are consistent in that they do knock doors. Labour has the mentality of bloc votes I think. They just roll out the map, and do it in a very calculated math way. They know they have areas of the country like South Shields which they're totally safe, generations of Labour supporters, and so they don't bother going there. that's a bloc vote.. then there's the minority votes, LGBT and ethnic minorities, particularly the large Muslim bloc vote, Labour relies on. Once they counted all these bloc votes up and tested their popularity in those, they then focus their efforts on swing areas and/or getting a high turnout, plus some election fraud of course. I despise the party, I really do, and everything they stand for. They do not stand for the "working person" it's a myth that's been perpetuated around Labour. They're only generous on welfare and maintaining a large welfare State. That's not the answer though, it hasn't worked and has turned the country into a magnet for migrants. Just like giving large donations of cash to regimes in Africa isn't going to solve the poverty there without real work on the ground, education and investment in economically active people. Labour is the worse of all political parties for bad governance if you look at their history. Some of their mistakes and decisions have been of epic proportions that no competent small company would do, let alone a government. Like Brown selling a third of the UK's gold reserve at the start of a recession, to buy Euro's a currency we never would have. The Lisbon Treaty signing, surrendering British sovereignty and trade power to Brussels and costing the UK hundreds of billions over the years. And what do we have to show for it? Then there's the Iraq-Afghan war under Blair. Mass immigration under Blair too. The list goes on and on. You can go right back to 1947 and the Immigration Act granting British nationality and residency to the entire Commonwealth, over 1.6 billion people back then. That was Labour's decision. The 1970's energy crisis and rapid economic and industrial decline of Britain happened also at Labour's peak of their power when they had nearly every industry State nationalized still. They couldn't run a single one profitably.
@paullangton-rogers2390
@paullangton-rogers2390 7 лет назад
Nick Nack Uuugh yes. You can spot the Labour guys in unions too..always the big wide-arm framed glasses and loud mouths lol. I had a run-in with one such guy who worked for Royal Mail not long before it was privatised. Had to school him in who pays his wages and how businesses work, he had the mindset the businesses serve Royal Mail and its some institution that can forever go on losing money unaccountable and having "Royal" in the name and being State-owned allows him and his ilk to talk to its customers like crap and play the big man. I paid £15k in postage that year with 4 consecutive price hikes, and the nerve of the guy!

Cut taxes means less public services, I don't understand why English people find that difficult to understand and then they are crying about the NHS. 14 years of failure and its not completely obvious when you look at other countries. @hateclub
@hateclub 8 лет назад
+Jonathan Smith If you really think a Tory MP would be any different, you're mistaken. As the woman in the video said, the place seems to have gone downhill since the major industry was closed in the early 90s. No MP can fix that alone. It needs to be solved by government HQ in London. As far as industry protection goes - and to give a really left wing example - China protected its steelworkers by slashing the price of their exports, so the country made a much smaller profit, or even ran at a loss, but managed to keep ALL the people in all regions employed. Whereas Thatcher et al just closed the mines and industries because it was cheaper in the short term. And now what do we have to show for it? The strength and foresight of Chinese socialist governance has crushed our steel industry today beyond repair. As the final plants close, it will be lost for good. No MP can fix that now, not without serious government intervention, but the Tories would never do that because it involved serious input, serious money and, most importantly, nationalisation of assets and industry, which they hate. But if nothing is nationalised, it's left to the dogs in the free market. That's what we have now a 'free market', where places like South Shields are left to rot because the market has zero interest in that place, and never will, regardless of who the local MP is. This is modern Tory ideology, and is what New Labour trundled along with too. We need real hard left wing, socialist, nation-centric ideologies including nationalisation to protect areas with major exporting industries, such as what South Shields used to have before it was left to decline and die.
@jonathansmith8556
@jonathansmith8556 8 лет назад
I grew up in S Shields in the 70s and I can assure you it was in total decline long before the 90s. Oddly enough many, many parts of the UK that do not cling to the leftist client state ideology are prosperous and wealthy and actually generate wealth for the nation. I wonder why. If you think more hard-left ideology is the solution, you need your head examined.
@hateclub
@hateclub 8 лет назад
Jonathan Smith So which places have 'become rightist' and prospered, and how? And what would you do, under your own ideology, to make South Shields prosperous, that every leader and politician seems to have overlooked?
@jonathansmith8556
@jonathansmith8556 8 лет назад
+hateclub A point of order first. Only put words in quotation marks when you are quoting someone. Now, if you want to know which places have prospered, as a rule of thumb divide England up into red & blue constituencies and you will broadly have your answer. The answer to your final question is that *I* would do nothing. This is the leftist's hopeless answer to everything. Politicians can do nothing to generate wealth and jobs, only people can. The people of South Shields need to stop trying to suck the state's teat and generate wealth and business themselves. Typically, though, people would are like this tend to vote blue rather than red.
@hateclub
@hateclub 8 лет назад
Thanks for the "point of order". Your red/blue division explanation doesn't help at all. Rather than it being anything to do with economic prosperity, it could be that wealthy people flock together then vote Blue in order to protect their own interests. We all know money makes money. Now I'm not saying that's definitely the case, but you can't just say, "Look at all these blue areas full of rich people", and think that correlates to economic prosperity, specially since it was once the traditionally Red areas that made the nation great, thanks to manufacturing, mining etc. It could be that those who got rich off those sectors then flew the nest to nicer pastures and voted Blue because it protected their interests and nobody else's. You're going to have to tell me what is it that makes a place into a wealth-generating area. So far all I've ever gleaned from this sort of information is that wealthy people live in Blue areas. No mention of how, or where, they get their wealth. Question not answered. Try again.

I'm a small c conservative that lives near Newcastle. The guy that said people around here are "too ingrained to vote anything other than Conservative" is bang on. The thing is, most people around here don't like a lot of what Labour stand for. They're quite socially conservative, patriotic, want lower taxes, and less immigration (all things that the Conservatives more or less stand for). Most people don't know the difference between Socialism & Capitalism, but a lot of people are dependent on the state through public sector employment or benefit dependency, so when the Conservatives want to cut those things (for completely economically sound reasons) people take it personally as an attack on them. Labour's rhetoric is deeply ingrained here; the Tories are seen as evil rich people, and rich people generally are disliked. However, most people themselves want to be rich, and nobody complains about the rich people that run Labour. There is a right wing vote here, which the rise of UKIP in the north has shown.

You are crazy. He is only interested in one person: that is Jacob Rees-Mogg, just like all his ancestors. Don't be fooled by the sophistry and the clothing, or the upper class accent. He's out for himself and himself alone. All politicians are dirty liars. Democracy allows the best orators rather than the best and most qualified minds to take power. That's why you Thomas are unheard of and Rees-Mogg is everywhere like a virus. We can just hope that in the future unscientific democracy is replaced by scientifically educated Meritocracy and when I say science I mean every form of it, not just physics and chemistry or biology. The world cannot afford to have idiots like Rees-Mogg in charge allowing corporations (who buy their services via party donations) to pollute the air, oceans and land, and ultimately our food supplies, and to accumulate 99% of the resources to just 1% of the people. That cannot last. Oil will run out eventually and KAPUT!

@hats1642 5 лет назад
Admiralhall2000 I'm sure when the meritocracy is instituted you will go along with all of its policies, even those you strongly disagree with. And because there's no franchise you will be powerless to stop it developing into tyranny.
@Admiralhall2000
@Admiralhall2000 5 лет назад
Joseph Bissett Laughable. We all have to go along with the tyranny of the majority for 4 or 5 years powerless to change it over that time period. Not only that but what does an election actually do? It replaces one tyranny with another for 4 or 5 years, and often reverses the plans of the previous government, like Trump and Climate Change! You believers in democracy really believe you have a say? Political parties are financed largely by corporations. That means oil, gas and banks have the real power. The govt can then overrule local democracy to carry out fracking in areas where scientific studies have suggested geological or environmental problems! What say did the residents have when the 4 to 5 year dictatorship of the corrupt and bribed Party in power allow pipelines to built!? No say. In a democracy the Corporate party backers give you a choice between one set of under qualified puppets and another! People get the choice between the worst people eg. Trump the perverted moron vs Clinton the elitist in democracies. Meritocracy is much fairer. It allows only the best qualified and morally checked to rule. (Because like a business every candidate would be back ground checked). Everyone has a chance to take power as long as they can compete. Due to people like you who believe in this false theory of democracy being somehow representative and better than Meritocracy, when AI takes away all the jobs and oil becomes scarce democracies will cease anyway as non meritocratic tyrants take power! If democracy was good it would be used by corporations to select their leaders. Yet time and again they tend to merit based employment and leadership. Also consider this: would passengers of a plane be given a vote between 2 candidates, neither of which are qualified or experienced to fly their plane?
@gogman25
@gogman25 5 лет назад
And how do you propose a meritocracy is implemented? How do you ensure that the tyranny of the elite is generous to the plight of the poor? You're a psuedo-intellectual at best, a totalitarian at worst.
@Admiralhall2000
@Admiralhall2000 5 лет назад
gogman25 Well consider this: how does democracy prevent the things you mention? All suffer the tyranny of political parties who are corrupted by the finances they get from oil and fracking companies or banks who have been found to launder drug money globally. Their tyranny lasts the term of their office until they are ousted and replaced with equally bribed and corrupt opposition. Both sides have links with failed outdated ideologies that often lead to perverse decisions. Meritocracy would work the same way businesses select their leaders: firstly they need to be qualified to PhD level and pass relevant exams set by those employed in the Civil Service and at the best universities. Then they need to prove they have a track record of outstanding success in their business or work life. Only the best would then be eligible for election by the masses. We would then have checks and balances in place via a judicial arm as well as a Scrutiny upper house voted in by PR selected in a similar way to stand for election so no one without ability is allowed into govt. We could also write a constitution. During the election all candidates would be allowed to advertise themselves using a fixed government budget online or TV/radio only to save paper. However other than their official debates on TV and ads no other reporting on them would be allowed. This would make it fairer and more equal as trial by press or media is dysfunctional. In a meritocracy the constitution would protect the rights of the poor with a long term vision of how to make the economy sustainable in a way that is equitable to all. Your final comments show a lack of upbringing. See if you can overcome it. I am very disappointed in you. You have such potential.

A Reyrolle Electrical Switch Gear had 15,000 employees. 50’s and 60’s Barbour still make coats for royalty! There was 13 coal mines when I was a lad. Bede Trading Estate had many manufacturing factories! I was always a Tory but the Tory Party let us down! Thatcher for one! At one time there were so many boats in the river up to 4 in depth. So many you couldn’t see the water! Tory should hang it’s head in Shame!

He will never be Prime Minister. He has popularity but not in that way. He's far too autocratic and eccentric to be a leader, not to mention his very Euroskeptic and Thatcherite leanings.. The Conservatives are a deeply divided party and it takes a tactful leader to bring that lot together. I think May has been lucky to manage it over Brexit, given the deep divisions over EU.

I'm from South Shields, and Labour is an abusive husband constantly bashing the electorate.... But of course the battered wife keeps going back, no matter how bad beaten she gets... R.I.P South Shields, once a wonderful thriving town completely left to rott by Labour, and the biggest problem is the electorate constantly blames the wrong party, such a terrible shame. Mr. Reese-Mogg got it perfectly right, it could change but it will take a long time, South Shields doesn't have long, the town is dying.

People - and indeed this item - tend to think Rees-Mogg is simply a joke. The startllng truth, if you listen to what he is saying, rather than the accent in which he is saying it, is he talks a lot of sense, and he means what he says: and he is brave enough to do this, given the often violent hostility met by him and other Tories. He also has a nice line in self-deprecating humour.
@solatiumz
@solatiumz 8 лет назад
+Singapom888 He still does not understand what working class people have to go through on a daily basis though. The House of Commons was supposed to be just that, full of commoners, not people who were educated at Eton or Harrow or any other toff boarding school.
@Ithaka1290
@Ithaka1290 8 лет назад
+solatiumz I'm pretty sure it was a way for wealthy merchants who weren't lords to affect laws actually, the idea that an average working man could become an MP was absurd right up until the late Victorian era and even then it took huge social change to install a Labour government. AND even then the first working class Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald was arguably a failure, whereas privately educated, wealthy Clement Attlee was possibly the most successful Labour prime minister to date. Don't assume the House of Commons does what it says on the tin, words change meaning vastly over hundreds of years
@solatiumz
