Jacqueline du Pré, 1945 - 1987.
Great musicians are complex characters, yet they often reveal themselves with starting simplicity and clarity in their work. Thus the programme assembled here illuminates the larger-than-life personality of a legendary 20th-century virtuoso, Jacqueline du Pré.
She is featured in four of the great masterpieces for cello and orchestra, and prominent among her collaborators are two conductors who were closest to her. One, Daniel Barenboim, was her husband. The other, Sir John Barbirolli, was among her earliest mentors. Both, like her, were unashamed romantics. Their musical and moral support was essential to du Prés tragic but, in the final analysis, inspiring career.
