Caught myself agaiin re-watching your reaction. I think what we hardly talk about is the music. How perfectly does the piano (the great Gérard Jouannest), the accordeon, melodic percussions, xylophone and others set the mood, underline the great stories this guy told with their specific rhythm? Every bloody time?

Very true. Thanks for pointing that out.

I never can get over it how much of an insight this man had in the human condition, the way he portrayed people of all sexes, all ages, all walks of life, pitying them, routing for them, ridiculing them, celebrating them, empathizing with them, and never forgot to include himself in what Balzac called the "Comedie Humaine". It is actually sad that most music nowadays has little to do with informing, teaching us of life itself, of what is going on, what should be celebrated, what should be criticized. It sadly has faded into a sort of entertainment with spectacle and celeb worship that does not reflect anything of the real world.

Indeed! I love that. And he is not afraid to go places that others are not willing to go. I admire and respect that. Again this is an amazing song and performance! Thanks for introducing me to it!

@@SaeedReacts. And as you said in the other reaction. He did that in the 50s and 60s. I can imagine there were maybe other artists who were extraordinary in that way (maybe not as much as him), but who does it nowadays?

"Property" is a false friend word.

I know "Les Vieux" since I'm a kid and listened to it many and many times. Chills and goosebumps are here, each time I listen to that amazing song ! Wonderful lyrics by Brel and beautiful music by Gérard Jouannest, & Jean Corti (probably arranged by François Rauber). Thank you for that video ! 🙏

Bowie was a Brel fan. He obviously had a different style but shared the same use of crescendo in the story telling. This song here is not so much about crescendo though...

since you reached Belgium and french lyrics, you might as well proceed to the rabbit hole named Stromae... I dare say Papaoutai, Fils de Joie, L'enfer or Santé would be right up your alley!
