it's interesting to see the culture of rugby where players have the mentality of being physical, hitting the gym and getting big right from the youngsters at club to even professional rugby, especially in Northern Hemisphere. There's a fair amount of emphasis on size-focused, hitting hard during trainings and games and pumping up muscles at gym. In contrast to Super rugby (Southern Hemisphere rugby), there is emphasis on skills, speed, evolving & thinking constantly. To the point where I find my eyes glued to watching rugby at all the way from grass-root level, especially in New Zealand, with club footy to school rugby to Mitre 10 cup. Size does not seem to be the sole focus over there. Would be cool to see more discussions on that.

This is fairly important for all to hear regarding injuries. It might sound weird but people that didn't play don't appreciate the physical toll the sport takes even with regards to Brain Damage which doesn't get the same attention as boxing or NFL but it's a brutal sport and salute to anyone who wants to do it professionally, especially since no guys will make enough to retire when their career is over. i know so many former professionals working normal jobs now

One of the main themes that comes out from retired rugby players, is the warrior the mentality, and i have lost my warriors friends. Ive broken myself, Ive left what i love, now nobody cares about my massive commitment. Its like a heart being ripped out. Not to mention the bones broken. I think rugby should offer some post profession backup. to players. Pshychology support.

@Winnepausakee
@Winnepausakee 4 года назад
"It affects your life afterwards...." He was referring to the injuries, but clearly in the context of the whole, "it" affects one's sense of self and world view. That may be the "price" that the professional athlete is willing to pay when younger and lacks the perspective he now has. And, whatever the sport, there are those who will be willing to make their own money off this narrow, youthful view. Before the "professional" game, I played rugby for 19 years. It was a primary enjoyment and I trained year round in order to play the "split" season in New England (USA). I would never have said to myself, "multiple surgeries are worth the enjoyment" as pain is NOT something we should be "enjoying". Years ago there was a national hockey league player who from the time of his first hockey game as a tyke in Canada, his father saved his stitches in a box on the mantel. The player was quoted in mind of his injuries, "It's only pain". He later was found to be a homeless person looking for his next "hit" of pain killer long after he was retired and no one cared about him any longer as he wasn't part of the money making machine. This is one of the my chief criticisms of the professional game; when all amateur, the "stars" had a community and a job or training for a job to return to. What does one return to as a "professional" athlete if from one's youth ones "training" for the future was limited to the sport. This is the case, the falsity that follows American top class college football or basketball players....the idea of being educated is a joke. If they don't make it to the pros ( and average career is 5 years) what do they then do. This seems an honest caring fellow with a soul....."fellows smashing" each other, the modern game as created by the Laws and the ways they are interpreted making "bash" the key skill as opposed to running for space and moving the ball into space....there is no space.....is NOT necessary. Rugby was a "manly" game through the 1980's when the ball moving was primary, NOT the tedium of bashing bashing bashing...."It affects your life afterward".....This from a one time rugby lover.

Namibia as a rugby-country is in an unfortunate situation. Far behind the Boks and far ahead of anybody else in Africa. They should have the opportunity to play regular internationals against countries ranked 11-20 every year. Playing against Kenya as Africa's No. 3 doesn't help a bit. Their only chance to improve and win a game at the next RWCs.

David de Villiers it would’ve been a waste of a player he gained much more notoriety and respect playing for Namibia than he ever would of playing for South Africa plus I hate the mentality that just because he played for a small nation he should’ve gone to a bigger one it’s that mentality that’s currently ruining the islands specifically cause of Australia and New Zealand

@daviddevilliers9969 4 года назад
Yeah even SA is having that problem, last year we had a school boy called kade wolhueter (who is most likely a future bok), who was denied playing sa schools because he signed a contract to a french club, there was another player but I cant rememberhis name who also had that issue, and also our backwards politics and extremely weak Rand is whats driving more and more Saffas to overseas, where the money is and where your skin color doesnt threaten your chances of been selected. I hope this doesnt happen, but I believe politics will eventually be the downfall of south African rugby
@adammiddup-jones4563
@adammiddup-jones4563 4 года назад
David de Villiers I hate the argument of the skin colour thing there’s a reason that’s in place and I mean you just won a World Cup you can’t be struggling in terms of players that haven’t been selected like who. And I mean the reason those guys go are they are players who aren’t gonna be boks such as Willemse wouldn’t get anywhere near that team

Saracens were and are excellent at looking after their players and not over playing them. They also spend a lot of time and money looking after their players after they retire which, ironically, is what they are now being hugely criticised and penalised for with the Salary Cap investigation. PRL and RFU would rather Saracens not care for their players and run them into the ground before disposing of them.
