He’s totally the type that is addicted to attention, he lightly flirts with everything that moves and then acts so innocent like he didn’t mean to be flirty
Looking back on it, it's really sad that Nickelodeon showed children a genuinely toxic and dysfunctional relationship, and undermined it by playing a laugh track behind it. Instead of teaching kids that those situations are unhealthy, they're taught to think it's funny.
That seems to be fairly run of the mill with comedy, especially these days. Most of the popular sitcoms: south park, family guy, American dad and others treat dysfunction and toxic behaviour as something to laugh at.
@@dantegrimm6439 They try to use it as a type of coping mechanism, which in theory is a good thing, you should have a healthy sense of humor where you can laugh at yourself and the more upsetting aspects of the world. But when that's your ENTIRE shtick, then it's not that funny anymore, it's just overly cynical, nasty, and unhealthy. I've seen a lot of people point to Rick and Morty as a show that's overly mean and cynical at times (and I love Rick and Morty btw). You gotta balance your humor, yeah, life sucks, but not *that* much.
@@happyheavenly4200 I'm not disagreeing. But you see the same thing in both adult and children shows, laughing at toxic behaviour. I suppose a better analogy would be later season spongebob some of the episodes come across as mean spirited and we're supposed to laugh at it.
I'm just now realizing that all the dirty jokes that "rex" made were really just robbie, and everyone knew it but acted like it was rex. Like if I was tori I wouldn't be like, "ew rex" I would be like "ew robbie"
I mean it was probably his way of coping. Did you see the episode where he got like really sad when Rex died? The puppet obviously means a lot to him. Maybe Rex is like his version of the “cooler” Robbie.
Everyone knows Rex is like Robbie's persona. Therefore, everyone adress him as such, even when they know it's just Robbie saying things he would never actually say without the puppet
They're both pretty toxic. Jade seems insecure and dealing with a lot of issues, beck constantly let other girls hit on him and bathed in their attention. He also kissed other girls why they were dating.. you could see why she was insecure
He kissed only Tori and it was for a play... an episode which apparently isn't canon. Then he kissed Tori after breaking up with Jade Edit: i haven't watched Victorious on a while so i started to watch it again and i was wrong. (Taking out the kiss on the play, which it wasn't a true kiss) Beck and Tori never kissed, he never kissed a girl while being with Jade
@@alessandra8230 i never said he wasn't, i only replied to the "he also kissed other girls while they were dating" which is not true. He only kissed Tori and it was for a school play and that's pretty much it. He tried to kiss her much later but after breaking up with Jade
He wasn’t the reason for her insecurity. It was her parents rejection that led her to her unhealthy attachment styles. He never realized how much she depended on him, and never took her as seriously as she did him. It’s not his fault tho - she was never mentally strong enough to communicate this to him. They’re both adolescents with developing frontal cortex’s, and unprocessed trauma it’s unrealistic to expect a healthy relationship from them and it’s irresponsible to place blame on these kids
normally that line gets me to laugh but damn, now that you pointed it out i cant see it the same way anymore. imagine having friends in a relationship who caused the group so much distress that they had physical reactions to arguments that didnt even involve them like crying or fainting... especially in high school. every time i see another video about this show it continues to blow my mind how fucked things were.
@@citrus7745 exactly, and we know that Cat's home life wasn't very good, but they just drag her into situations that would remind her of that without a second thought. She's having a full on panic attack and they just keep screaming at her.
@@andreas.222 The gist of it is, Cat's brother was mentally ill and constantly getting into dangerous situations(ie "I love Japan! Except my brother got stabbed there." and "my brother got shot by a clown.") so her parents were much more focused on her then him. Not only that, but her parents were constantly arguing over how to deal with her brother, which terrified her. She was ignored most of the time but then dragged into arguments that she didn't want to be a part of, which she avoided by hiding under her bed(Hence the "im under my bed! Im under my bed!" line). It's also believed that her air-headedness may be a coping mechanism, as well as the possibility that she may also be mentally ill due to the "My hair colour has nothing to do with my mental problems!" line.
I always hated how Jade would get away with being abusive because she's the 'bad girl' stereotype. No one ever calls her out on her behavior because they're afraid of her both physically and mentally. It always rubbed me the wrong way. And referring to Cat as a pet so flippantly solidified that for me.
Jade’s a bully, plain and simple. There’s a difference between being alternative - what they thought they were portraying her as - and a bully - what they actually portrayed her as.
@@LaurenPebble Everyone knows shes a bad person with moments of compassion. most if not all of the characters acknowledges shes a horrible person. So no, they portray her just as she is. Its just that we like her regardless of those, as a character.

Shes normal and shes probably my pick if I were to choose a friend but as a favorite character? Now thats a different story.
Yeah. What turned me off from iCarly after watching it a few years was about how uncaring the characters could be. Only watched this show a few times. I didn’t like that one iCarly episode her brother gets hurt, they ask about him for a second then go do their dance they do. I don’t get how that’s funny with the severity of what I vaguely remember. I do think he was a good brother to her. I found Disney channel characters more likeable

@@Mari_star_light yeah, that's the thing, you shouldn't justify someone for being an asshole just because he's in highschool. Believe me, he's old enough to know you shouldn't do that if you're in a relationship
That shows she has trust issues, and they could both communicate more. Just talking to someone isnt giving them attention or flirting. In adult relationships you trust, you arent possessive. Their relationship is awful and they need alot of counseling.
Right it used to piss me off he never opened his mouth whenever a girl was flirting with him, and even when Tori kissed him he could have told her no but he didn't do anything about it
I don't really know why, but i do understand her. Maybe by saying: "You could look worse if you wanted" she said that he's attractive but he didn't say it back... I always hated how jade toxic and abusive behaviour was normalised here just to fit the stereotype of "the bad girl" like everyone was afraid of her but as a child I thought that was cool, but now as an adult I won't even waste a second around someone like her
beck: lets other girls flirt with him without saying he has a girlfriend to inflate his ego; hid talking to alyssa vaughn from jade because he knew she wouldn't like it; degrades jade for calling him out for this stuff; tried to kiss his ex's friend; makes remarks about jade being his crazy gf behind her back jade: degrades beck for caring about his appearance; overly jealous a lot; verbally abusive; yells and raises her voice at beck; forces other people into their relationship problems; threatens to dump beck to get her way; treats becks friends like shit honestly the list for both of them goes on. beck and jade are both horrible to each other and the fact that its never addressed in the show as being wrong is such a bad message to teenagers who are in relationships or want to be - especially when everyone treats them like "goals" and acts like jade is the ideal woman to be/be with. i wish beck and jade had actually discussed these issues and agreed to work on them rather than just coming back together because they missed each other. i also dont really like jade much just because she's a bitch for the sake of comedic relief or being cool. a lot of people idolize that behavior and in reality shes a very toxic person.

@@thedisabledviking i mean they even had a shovel in jades back car. When jade drove tori for a ride beck to school. She was in the dessert amd singed a creepy song. While there was no signal there tori jumped out of the car Jade said maybe next time. It was kinda funny for a show but also creepy as an adult now. Me at 13 years old: I hope they get back together, they should stop fighting! Me now at 19: for the love of god, they need to break up or go to couple’s therapy.
I know y’all fixing to drag me over this but..I gotta say it; Beck sometimes gaslights jade, he does things that’ll intentionally make her upset/knows she’ll react how she does. Then brushes it off like she’s crazy, or she’s paranoid, or it’s not that big of a deal. (That does not excuse her behavior, or how she acts in those situations). It also explains why the littlest of things set jade off as well. It also is super crappy how beck never really shuts down the female attention/goes out with other girls knowing how jade feels. He also went after tori, despite most likely knowing that jade was still in love with him. It also shows that beck doesn’t love jade as much as she does him. He also kind of doesn’t respect her either if I’m honest with you. I know jade is just as toxic, however some of her toxic behavior is due to the long term side effects of what beck has done. In a way nick showed us a modern day toxic relationship, and an early inside scoop into it too. I wish they explored more of their relationship, and maybe even beck and jade trying out future HEALTHY relationships and seeing how those panned out for them. It just sucks it got canceled so quickly. Aside from icarly, this was the one show that showed actual depth to the characters.
Absolutely no one will drag you for this, consensus is theyre both toxic. Jade is just more showy about it. Beck completely lacks empathy for Jade and gaslights the shit out of her whenever she brings up an issue with their relationship. Sure, she does it aggressively and it’s a terrible approach, but he knows her and he knows that’s what he signed up for. He still doesn’t take time to see things from her point of view. Any issue she has is either neglected or her fault, while all of his issues are valid and still her fault. He lets girls come onto him all the time just for the attention which is terrible to do to someone’s girlfriend. Jade is overbearing, nasty, and controlling, but Beck is apathetic, egocentric and just as controlling. Neither should be in a relationship at all, let alone with each other.
Here’s my question: if Jade hated being a part of their little friend group so much, (not including Andre) why was she in it? Doesn’t she have other friends who tolerate her weirdness?
Beck was part of the friend group so Jade's stuck with them regardless, and she keeps hiding that she actually cares towards them despite her mean attitude.
The scene with Cat having an anxiety attack while Beck and Jade argue before fainting while the laugh track goes nuts is up there as one of the most uncomfortable and thoughtless moments I've ever seen from a children's show. I've never liked this scene, not even as a kid. I've been known to get very anxious or emotional when others around me are either angry or shouting, sometimes not even at me, and that's only grown worse overtime as those things, along with sudden loud noises, are huge triggers for my anxiety and I will begin to have a panic attack if the circumstances are bad enough (I've been frequently having panic attacks actually). Both of these triggers are present within this scene and are played for laughs, and it's just plain wrong. "It's just a kids show," It's not that deep," "Stop taking it so seriously," no. I don't care if this is a kids show, that's precisely the problem. I don't need my shows to be sunshine and lollipops all of the time, but I personally think that having a very realistic panic attack due to common triggers and obvious trauma, having it result in said character having a panic attack LITERALLY PASSING OUT, having a laugh track over it, all the while acting it out with real people is indescribably careless, especially combined with a lot of other things this show tries to teach. If you do not think that this scene is weird, at the very least, I genuinely wanna know why aside from "it's a comedy."
Now that I think about this, some of these characters lives were pretty dark for a kid’s show. I mean Jade had her dad who never showed her any sort of love or affection and thought her dreams were stupid. Cat has her mentally unstable brother so her parents probably pay a lot more attention to him then her which could explain why she was an airhead. Andre has his grandmother he has to take care of now since she became so crazy (which in my opinion is kinda sad). Robbie has his puppet and even though he’s funny, it kinda seems like the puppet is expressing his deep dark inner thoughts which explains why he carries it around all the time. Tori and Trina just have awful parents. And Idk what to say for Beck but yeah, this show is a bit dark.
Beck lives in an RV parked in his parents driveway because he doesnt want to follow their rules idk that has to say something about their relationship but I'm probably just reading into it too much
@@saimahramen If the show would of continued, i bet it would of unravelled. They all had history and issues before Tori and Trina joined the school. They didn't just magically begin having issues when they joined, so I wish the show wasn't cancelled, because we could of easily found out more-

It's sad how her safe space is under her bed, that's where she wants to be in times of distress and that brakes my heart💔 Acting like an "air head" and young is a coping macinisum for some people, it makes them feel safe and let's them forget about their reality. The scene with Cat and them in the closet really touched me. Cat was obviously triggered by them arguing, implying that she had PTSD from her parents arguing. Very subtle writing.
@@someoneunknown7655 Yeah literally. Her character throughout the show often shows signs of deep-rooted abuse. And then the laugh track is added and everyone's like "what a fun show for kids hahaha". Ugh.

Are we just gonna ignore Cat saying, "just pretend I'm under my bed", during Beck and Jade's screaming match? Because that's some pretty dark shit right there.
Peach Juice finally someone else caught on to this, beck literally bathed in attention from other girls and didn’t reject not one of them (besides trina) if anything Jade had every right to be upset most times she was.
And in one episode where he offers Tori a ride to school, she finds out that several other girls just show up to his house to ask for a ride. And he just lets them come to school with him, not minding if they get touchy or obnoxious. He didn't even stop the girls from fighting with Tori in the car. Jade's jealousy is very understandable.
growing up means truly realising how messed up beck and jade were as a couple and that their characters only got developed after their break up. they legit became better people and friends to the others when they weren't together and I cannot believe Nickelodeon deluded us into believing they were 'couple goals' for so long
In Sam and Cat she lives with her Nona instead of her parents. I’m guessing because her parent divorced and she didn’t want to stay with either one or something.
she was emotionally, and sexually abused by her family and brother when she was growing up. like she said before her brother is crazy, and he abuses his family mostly towards cat. also her brother cracked a vase over her head thats why her hairs red cause she liked the color, everyone on victorious was neglected by their parents or guardian. so basically victorious is about gifted teensvin a highschool sooo... :P
Cat has a bipolar disorder, Tori and Trina's mom cheats on the dad, Andre's grandma is mentally unstable, Jade and Beck are toxic, and during Trina's audition Schowitz was basically high And this is supposed to be a kid's show
Elizabeth Ama tbh i feel like cat acts the way she does because of her brother, since her brother is clearly mentally unstable she may lack attention from her parents, which causes her to act like a child to get the attention from her friends that her parents didn't give her

0:55 What we see happening to Cat is PTSD. She probably went through a traumatic expierence and used age regression as a coping method. Age regression is where after something traumatic happens, they go back to a age where they were happy. This is used to cope. She’s have a PTSD panic attack from the arguing and shouting.
i think that the main problem is that if you showcase that this type of behavior is funny or normal in a relationship children will just normalize toxic relationships, it doesn’t take a psychology degree to see how problematic they are.

No, Jade is a toxic person. If you remove Beck from the show, look how she acts to everyone else. She is a terrible, toxic person and people only defend her because she is played by Liz Giles. No human would realistically want to be friends or date someone who acts like Jade
@@Phoenix-pm2qr she always had a reason to dislike tori, as tori didnt take ger seriously and kissed beck multiple times while him and jade were a couple. she wasnt mean to andre or cat most of the time, everyone hates trina, and robbie tried to hit on her multiple times, which made her uncomfortable. Plus Beck seemed to like the attention, gave random women his phone number, drove his hot fan girls to school every day without Jade, frequently texted a hot girl who was interested in him, and worst of all he kissed Tori in front of Jade while they were dating.
I believe someone already pointed this out, but realize how Cat starts having a breakdown and imagines she’s “under her bed” when Jade and Beck start fighting. That coupled with what we know with Cat’s brother.. Her childhood was probably not the best. It’s safe to say that her air headedness might be a self-defense mechanism of some sort that she adopted. That's good theory! With Victorious there are a lot of hidden messages with the way the characters act. But since it's a kids show they need to keep it Pg in a way. People say that Rex is all the feelings and bullying Robbie has dealt with in one puppet. People say that Cat's brother is the reason for her being mentally "unstable." People also say that Jade would've been a lesbian if this wasn't a Nick show, since scissors are constantly being brought up. I'm not sure, but I find all of this stuff interesting.
Ah the janitors closet. Doesn't matter which teen show you're watching, the characters spend at least 30% of the entire series talking in a janitors closet

@@randompersonyoudontknow1678 He needed more screen-time, I agree. They could have done something with him being (I believe) the only one going into acting and working really hard at it, or trying to find more hobbies to fill the time he used to spend with Jade once they've broken up, etc.
Beck and Jade are the most unrealistic couple you'll ever see on TV. There is ZERO chemistry between the two and that's not the fault of the actors, Liz and Avan play well but as a couple they seem completely inauthentic. Why would Beck, who is portrayed as someone who could have ANY girl he wants and who also has a very stable personality and a really nice character, be with a girl who is in a bad mood literally every day, yells at him all the time AND is basically unkind to everyone else? You'd have to have pretty damn low self-esteem to be with someone like that, and that's exactly not the case with Beck (if anything, it's with Robbie), and as if a goth girl like Jade would be interested in a guy like Beck who is portrayed as a pretty boy.
Yeah. Dan might as well have said on any of the episodes "We won't have Beck go with Tori due to a talented and hot guy going with a talented and hot girl being too cliché. A perfect guy with a perfect girl". Even if there was some unexplained drama and/or trauma that happened, a guy would get tired of a girl like that, and reasonably so.

So in Sam & Cat there is a character named Goomer, he is one of the main characters besides Sam and Cat. Goomer shows up in an episode of Henry Danger as the sidekick to a villain called Frankini. In that episode Goomer says "I used to hang out with Frankini's sister a lot." Since Sam has never mentioned having a brother (only her twin sister, Melanie) we are led to believe that Frankini is Cat's brother. Idk just a little detail I noticed.

It’s ridiculous that you all keep defending jade just because you like her. She’s emotionally abusive and I don’t care what Beck did to “deserve it.” Nobody deserves to be treated like that.
Not saying that Beck is good either; he is just as bad of a boyfriend as he acts condescending towards Jade and does not decline any women flirting, but I'm sick of people saying that Jade was justified. I get why she can get jealous at times, but the thing is that she gets way too possessive; she even threw a rock at him. It doesn't matter what he did, or how mentally unstable Jade is, this is literal abuse and cannot be excused. Tbh I hated this couple; they were both bad towards each other. Jade needs to work on her insecurities and fix her violent behavior, and Beck needs to not take advantage of Jade and become more faithful
They were overall a bad couple and Nickelodeon shouldn’t have put their characters like that on the show. It’s teaching kids to be overly possessive and making them think it’s okay to treat their significant other like that. They weren’t a good role model for a healthy relationship.

I feel like jade has been hurt before and is seriously insecure so she acts like that because she’s afraid she’ll lose him forever and she actually cares about him
She has daddy issues cause her father works a lot and does not give attention to her and she has a difficult relationship with her mother too cause she said she loves scissoring more than her mother
I mean the episode where the break up this first time, she wants to get him a Rottweiler because apparently Beck's always wanted one. It mauls Beck's dad and leave him in the hospital but they get back together cause she had good intentions.
She was the toxic one in the relationship, no matter what beck did, it wasn't good enough for her, why he stayed with her as long as he did is beyond me, why would any man stay with someone as toxic as her
