Internal monologue is both a blessing and a curse because for example it's so great to have when you read books and create fictional scenarios but then when you go to sleep this voice suddenly torments you about your fears and anxieties and plays back all of your embarassing moments like why

having an internal monologue is just like literally talking with yourself. I hear thoughts in my own voice in words, in sentences. Like if I see someone and i like their shirt i can verbalize in my head "ah, that's a cool shirt" and then keep building off that and say, still in my head, "I wonder wear they got it from.... maybe I can find it if i look it up on google or something. I'll check later maybe" It's like if i was talking to myself out loud, except it's not out loud, it's all in my head. I don't know if other people have described this but i didn't read a lot of comments, so if you're reading this Jae, hope this helps i guess And with giving speeches, just because I have an internal monologue doesn't mean I know what I'm going to say. I can write well, I think, but I cannot give a speech or speak in front of other very easily. The speech isn't automatically in my head, I still have to create the speech. So, I think that is something that just depends on how people think and how fast they are on the spot, which I don't think is something limited to only people with an internal monologue, or without.
@munni7787
@munni7787 4 года назад
Totally agree with the fact about talking to my mind.I actually do that often.I talk to my oinner self about something.And yeah u can't give a speech Instant without preparing it.Good advice though..thanks a lot.

literally rn typing and reading this i'm talking inside my head and i can hear it but not actually hear the words. like how you can look at a certain picture of a food and smell it but it's only a picture ... , example if you see pizza and you end up smelling pizza but there isn't actually a pizza in front of you.

I find this whole "pre screening your conversation" weird. I actively have an inner monologue but if im in a conversation my inner monologue becomes my outer monologue. Its not like when someones talking to me I think of an answer before saying it, because you actually listen and respond in real time. Its more for when youre by yourself or like now when typing this out.
@jessica4597
@jessica4597 4 года назад
That's exactly what I was thinking...unlike what Diane said, my inner monologue does not act as a filter, it gets projected into real words immediately, so I do fudge up words.
@icematchalattewoatmilk
@icematchalattewoatmilk 4 года назад
yeah i think that's exactly how you describe it. what you're saying verbally is what your inner monologue is saying in real time. for me it's just like im thinking and speaking in my head, but im not actually saying the words with my mouth. i find it so hard to grasp the concept of not being able to hear yourself in your head. like what do people without inner monologues "hear" inside their brain?
@Dan-jw2cb

I do have an inner monologue, too. But I am so bad at speaking. There's no filter or whatsoever similar to that. That's the only thing I can't relate to Diane.

@@icematchalattewoatmilk RIght?? Like even thinking of this response, im hearing myself say it in my head. I havent said a word out loud, but i do hear it. Are people, who dont have inner monologues, not capable of hearing that? How do they respond to comments like these, i wonder?
@lolann77

I think it depends on the situation like if I need to actively screen or process through some things, but sometimes I think the words before they actually come out and other times, it just comes out.

This was so interesting. I always assumed people have an internal monolog, but hearing Diane explaining this to Jae makes me understand how weird is having this ability. I thought that this skill is '' developed " during your childhood, cause, like, reading books helps your imagination and stuff. But Jae said that he also read books, so now I'm assuming this has to do with your genetics or is just random. P. i only found out a few months ago through twitter that some people don’t have inner monologues! i thought everyone had one. i usually think of everything in my own voice pretty much continuously making sentences that relate to my thoughts, but i can change the voice as i please or if relevant. i feel as though even when i’m listening to someone during a conversation, my voice is still doing it, just further in the back of my mind. so, i’ll be listening but also thinking things usually about the person/what the person is saying/what i’m going to respond. i think that’s probably why i’m so articulate too. it’s so interesting! takes a lot to get my head around it

Yoooooo scholastic book fairs!!!!!!! 6:35 That was my favorite part of school, I looked forward to it so much lol. And I always bought the highlighters too, they had different scents lol. I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers them :)

I had like internal monologues ever since I was a kid. And those monologues were either funny or deep ones. And I just found about it ever since Jae released the episode. And I didn't know others doesn't have this kinds of things that I have.

I'll be sat in a deadly serious conversation and my inner monologue that never stops literally comes up with the randomist stuff making me laugh so much because I have some weird stuff in my head that will make no sense to anyone else

i think having internal monologue can be a disadvantage when you're feeling sad or having anxiety it's like having a war inside your mind but you can't say it out loud

So now I’m wondering how Jae writes his lyrics. If he doesn’t have an inner monologue then where do the ideas come from? Does he hear the music in his head along with the lyrics or does he just he just compose it out? When I write I always have a running commentary of what my next sentence would be and how I could change it to sound better but he doesn’t have the inner monologue so where does it condensed into words? I’m so intrigued on how his thought process works!

This topic is so so interesting! Good video. I am totally on Diane's side, and surprised this is not a common thing. When I read a book, it's almost same as listening an audio book. There is a voice acting the character in the book. If I watched a movie before reading the original novel, then I can hear the voice of the actor who was seen on that movie.

I agree with you, but I'm pretty sure it's actually more common for people to have an inner monologue as Diane said.

I actually read books with voices in my head. That helps me set the setting. TBH, there's like a whole movie in my head whenever I read books. I also used to read books out loud, dialogues and all. That helped me a lot with my pronunciation.

i tend to think of my internal voice as like... you know when you need to do an essay for an assignment and you do multiple drafts and versions? i pick how to type/write out and even say things in that way (i don't know if this makes sense but it's the best way i can explain it). and sometimes there'll be multiple layers of thoughts, like i'll be thinking one thing but i'll also be subconsciously thinking another thing in the "background" and sometimes i re-explain things to myself in my head in detail to "clarify" despite knowing exactly what i meant the first time i thought it. but sometimes i also only see things as images or scenes and they don't have any bg commentary coming in from me, like when i'm writing a narrative story and i just have the idea (like jae mentioned) and then i have to make a concentrated effort to fully and properly describe it. and all the while i'll be grumbling to myself or panicking in my head if i have a deadline to do it by and it's the last minute i'm writing it at. edit: i realised after rereading this how confusing this is to understand and i genuinely have no idea how to make it make any sense edit 2: also i don't hear a specific voice (or even my own) unless i consciously try to; like if i were to recall something i heard jae say, i'd hear it IN his voice, but usually it's just A Voice in my head emphasising certain parts of speech as it goes.

*Sourdough Pringles* - Jae, 2020 Most iconic line in this episode every time I listen to/watch it. Btw, this is definitely one of my favorite topics in the whole podcast coz I've just never questioned if everyone had an internal monologue. 🖤
