When food costs increase then so too does the mark up. A loaf of bread that costs a store $2 and they want to make 20%, would have a price tag of $2.50. This yields the store 50 cents. If the cost of the loaf goes up to $2.40, then the new price tag is $3 and yields the store 60 cents. Simple math. In Jagmeet's world, he would like to see the stores lower their profit margin so they only make the same profit on a higher cost of goods, thereby lowering their return on investments. SO yes, the grocery stores are going to make more money as the cost of goods goes up, because they expect a certain % return on their investments.

It's actually comical that he chose to feature this clip because it illustrates how poorly Jagmeet's questioning was put together. He is asking a CEO to commit to answering 2000 questions that he hasn't even seen, and turning his commitment to looking at them and a "No" for answering them. Anyone with a brain that works knows that Jagmeet's first goal, if he is to prove "gouging", would be to illustrate that grocers profit margins have gone up significantly. Obviously their prices are going up, but to make a point that they are profiteering on our backs, he would have to show that these prices are going up due to larger margins rather than increased expenses. I can only assume that he has no case to question on important specifics of grocery cost structure or he wouldn't have chosen this silly attempt at bullying without any real substance to the content of the questioning.
