Jaguar F-Pace SVR 1988 edition. Why you should buy this & not an Aston DBX, Cayenne turbo, SVR, etc.

The revised Jaguar F-Pace SVR first appeared in 2022 and was a thorough re-engineered version of the original. It's a big improvement but can it really compete with the likes of the Aston Martin DBX and Porsche Cayenne Turbo? Let's find out;

@@OldSkoolUncleChris I think they are reasonably reliable now, I was able to get one of the first in the country (a facelift f pace) on a 70 plate and it was rather unreliable. I exuded it as it was one of the first models but I think I had to take it back 4 times. 1st was a suspension knock which was there from the get go, then a engine warning light, then I had little things like the boot not closing and the engine belt was making a funny noise. Apart from that, it was the best car Iv ever owned.

Harry, a big thank you from the USA. I have a 2016 XJR that I simply cant let go. The other day I saw your old video on the same and I noted the orange detail on the grill surround, rear view mirrors and rear spoiler, so i took it back to Jag and had them do the same last week. The car is anthracite grey and it looks great. Once Jag cancelled the XJ replacement, i bought a 2 door S560 AMG to replace the XJ, but after driving that one home decided to keep the XJR after all. And I’m glad i did, the AMG is now gone. The Jag V8 supercharged engine is simply awesome. And so in the Uk I have ordered (quite a while ago) an F-Pace SVR. It still hasn’t gone onto Jag’s build schedule but I wanted to get that engine again before Jag goes all electric. I was looking at a DBX but now I’m retired I couldn’t get my arms around the additional cost when the F-Pace SVR offers so much value. And, I also have a 1985 XJS v-12 in the UK that is undergoing a bare metal respray to Amethyst Grey, an SVR paint. It has had a complete engine and suspension rebuild with KWE and I’m taking it to the Bespoke Rallies trip to the Pyrenees in May, following which I’m retracing your Spain road trip in the Porsche 911. Thanks for all you do, really good content presented in such a down to earth way!

Harry, an owner of XE the US version here. I test drove the SUVs and had been given as loaner to me while my car was for a maintenance. The regular Fpace looks like so much like BMW outside. However, the powertraiin and the engine is what make the different. The car drives like a sedan, and comparing to Epace which is a rubbish IMHO is more planted on the road. I can imagine how the special edition driving experience is, and if I had a finance to afford it I would buy it before the global EV nonsense rolls out. My XEs free 5 year maintenance is coming to the end this year and the model was phased out 3 years ago. Will get and the Jag SUV? No. However, whoever doesn't mind I would recommend to get it hands down.

Two other comments ,mpg was dire for local driving but pretty acceptable on long runs. I found it was too wide for the lanes I frequently drive and combined with the mpg the reason I let it go. It was better screwed together than my 991.2 GTS and I had no issues with it. Actually I enjoyed it more than the GTS. Miss it a lot. I have owned the 2019 model for two years. Still love it, it has such punching acceleration and sounds wonderful. They are so rare, the "how many left" website shows just 1300 in the UK. As for fuel consumption, the best I have managed on a journey from South Devon to/from Heathrow is 31.5 mpg, on premium fuel. My wife said I was wasting my money on that, but using E10 the best I have managed is 25.5. That's obeying motorway speed limits and driving sensibly. My old 1988 XJ 3.2 never managed more than 27 mpg, 240 HP, v/s 550 HP. That shows how much efficiency gain has occurred over the years. Maybe I will upgrade in the final production year of these fine cars. I do miss the smoothness of the old XJ on bumpy roads, that's the only downside as far as I am concerned, but there are very few roads where it is a problem.

You’re so right. I currently run an 21 F Pace P400 - the 3 litre 400 ho petrol one. It is a fabulous car. In 52 years of driving it’s the most competent A-B car I’ve ever owned. And it was great in the recent snow too. The computer system has been a pain in the bum with its tendency to do bizarre things. But it doesn’t matter as soon as you start driving you forgive it all - and Barrett’s of Ashford the main dealer have been exemplary in their support of the computer problem’s. Why people buy BMW and Audis instead of these I don’t know. Just waiting til March when hopefully the SVR arrives!! And you are wrong about one thing - the exhausts look GREAT. It’s a performance car and needs a to be a bit shouty. If you are reading this and you’ve never driven an F Pace (even the 2litre diesel is really nice!) go drive one.

On another note , being a farmers son & a car enthusiast I love your presentations & down to earth bloggs on both subjects. Good luck & keep up the good work !!

Wow what an amazing soundtrack. I always thought Jaguar could have made the f pace a bit more luxurious as after all it's a Jag. I've driven a few and they do feel cheap inside. However what an engine.

I’m going to get one… genuinely the best car for the money - and some. I’m got a 21 F-Pace petrol, which has been replaced by a phev400… so to replace we’rlooking at a cayenne, RR sport, defender, can’t find anything that touches the SVR. Stelvio Q, forget it. Levante for get it. X anything, yawn. SQ8… soft limiter and impossible to park anywhere. SVR=smile on face. Job done.

Great review Harry. Cheers from western Canada. Have tried to convince my wife that an SVR F Pace needs to replace our current SUV. I love the 550HP 5 litre in our F type! Love that engine. Good mileage when cruising. Think I need the same smile/mile ratio out of an SUV. Cheers.

Harry... you are getting old... at least your comments seem to indicate you are. Those exhaust pipes are simply awesome and on a performance car, that is what an exhaust should look like... shiny and shouty. But really, I do love the way you find something to "not like", just to appease those who think car reviewers must find something they don't like, but you also know that no Jaguar officials won't give a hoot that you didn't like the exhaust tips... so you won't endanger your future chances of getting more Jags to review. You are a true professional Harry... you play the game like a master.

I never understood why anyone would want an X5, GLE/ML or Q7 instead of one of these. I hope Harry's video helps Jaguar win some market share over the overwhelmingly German competition. They are great cars. I'm not in the market for a large SUV myself, but this is what I'd pick if I were.

BMW SUV´s are absolute definition of a crap in comparison to Daimler. Daimler is also crap imcomparison to SQ7. I drive Audi Q7 3.0 Benzin and having droven all the rest Audi is a fabulous machine. No idea about Jaguar tbh.

X5 handles pretty good in comparison to GLE and Q7(bar the SQ7 which has the 48v coilovers). BMW have always been my choice due to handling dynamics.

Reliability?
@StarHorseLover2012
@StarHorseLover2012 Год назад
@@cp4512 I think perceived reliability is the real problem. Somehow, 40 years on, the shadow of British Leyland seems to hang over Jaguar, particularly among British buyers. My experience of BMW and Audi reliability (new cars in both cases) has been bad.

@@StarHorseLover2012 sorry the hear that the German brands have been bad to you. After a Jag and a Range Rover, my personal experiences of JLR reliability (and their customer care) were horrific; nothing perceived, all experienced personally. And if you read the pistonheads forums you’ll see many similar experiences.

To my eyes it's definitely the best proportioned SUV. Good to see they've upgraded the interior too - always a negative aspect of the first generation. Can't help but think the standard car is a better buy however. Maybe it is just me but I always look at 'special edition' variants sceptically - historically a common thing just before a model is phased out! I see the brand being in a tricky predicament at the moment - I really hope they don't go the way of Saab!

Nice review Harry, thanks! Up until the Covid/supply chain issues you could pick from the SVO premium paint palette which also allowed you to choose matte versions if you were willing to pay for it. You could also choose a "bespoke" color of your own choice, again if you were willing pay and wait. Now days, as Jaguar ICE vehicles are winding down, several options are gone for good. There are also reports on that you get one key till they catch up with owners reporting months later they are still waiting. Truly the end of an era is approaching.

I really like what Jag did to refresh the F-Pace in '21 but I agree this special edition is a bit too subtle. The purple paint and gold wheels need to be bolder, à la Project 8. As for the chrome exhaust tips, we should be glad and celebrate that a vehicle in 2023 still has real exhausts at all, even if the chrome is a bit dated.

I’m keeping my pre facelift until it needs changing, maybe for the updated one. There are some pro’s to the pre facelift. It’s a bit lighter than the facelift, Harry weighed the old one at 1980kg so 100kg or more lighter, full leather as standard, nicer gear shifter, nicer rear lights, noisier and deeper sound, and no iPad stuck to the dash or touch sensitive heating controls. The infotainment has got a bit lated but it’s ok and of course I use CarPlay, still have a head up display, Radar cruise and lane steering etc. Such a comfortable feel good and fun everyday car! :)

@angi733
@angi733 Год назад
@@jamesyork5196 It's basically almost identical to the interior in Harry's Project 8. It is a nice place to be and no way near as bad as I had read. One of the advantages that JLR seem to have over others is the nice soft semi analine leather they use, nicer than a lot of other cars, that gives a nice sense of luxury to me. I think the latest JLR heater control module looks a bit cheap and nasty whatever it's fitted to, even the full fat range rover. Also have an L322 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography, that's still got a lot of class :)
