The X351 generation Jaguar XJ was a radical design departure from its flagship predecessors, with a distinctly more 'European' slant to its styling. This combined with strong engine choices from a 3.0 diesel Portfolio like this one, to the undervalued powerhouse that is the XJR means that they are outstanding bargains on the used market.
In this particular case, lovely interior design and imposing road presence meets surprisingly strong economy and a no-nonsense approach to driving...

Surprised you don't see more responses on your gentle, esoteric approach to reviewing cars. I own a 2013 X351 3.0 V6 diesel and run it for my small private tours in Ireland and it never fails to have the WOW factor for all my guests. Much more than my Mercedes Benz E350 V6. It also turns heads when shiny in its black livery, is a regular talking point with strangers on the street and gets marvellous attention from my car valeter!

I have to correct you here. The face-lift was on the 2013 model year, not 2014. On that face-lift it recieved uprated suspension and electrics and it relplaced the 6hp gearbox with the much better 8hp. That was also when the 3.0ltr supercharged engine was introduced. The diesel engine for that model year was either replaced or upgraded with a unit that went from 270hp and 420ftlb of torque to 360hp and a whopping 700ftlbs of torque. I have the 3.0ltr supercharged portfolio edition and I couldn't be happier. I can't imagine a smoother car as mine is like glass. The styling is exquisite. Aggressive as well as refined and stately and the interior is unsurpassed in my view. The infotainment system is very usable and the satnav takes post codes and takes you right there easy as pie. The X351 XJ is just stunning all round, it handles better than a car that size has any right to, staying incredibly flat through corners with immediate power on tap. It has incredible presence and never fails to turn heads. The rear styling with the lights was designed to look like cat scratches and I think it's stunning. When you're behind an XJ you're in no doubt as to what is in front of you, unlike it's bland Euro-box rivals. It's such a shame that Jaguar have ceased production of this incredible car. There are bargains still to be had. When I bought mine 9 months ago it only had 16,000 miles on it, it had been serviced every 2000 miles on average and had been garaged all it's life, I paid £19,000 for what is essentially a new car that at the last price point was over £70,000.

I own a 2012 X351 Portfolio XJ and mostly agree with what you had to say. Being an older gent I actually wanted to buy the older X350/358 version but was unable to find one in the right colour and condition, so I bought the X351. Yes, the cabin is a nice place to be, but in my opinion nowhere near as stately and grand as a Sovereign model X350/358, and the infotainment system is dreadful on the X351, practically unusable when it comes to Satnav! Prior to this XJ I owned two X types which were both more comfortable in the driver's seat department which is most disappointing considering that the XJ Portfolio is the top of the range. On the road, it handles well with a decent ride, but with only air suspension on the back, it doesn't supply the magic carpet ride of the older model's all-around air ride! However, it is such a handsome car inside and out you forgive its shortcoming! Incidentally, I average 35mpg around town and 47mpg on a steady run up the motorway.

I just wish the rear seats folded down as a standard feature. They don't even have a ski hatch 🧐 Jag totally missed the mass market by not having a hatchback saloon in their range

Indeed, prefer the X350. This, arguably, is the car that killed the XJ. 1969-2019.. Also prefer the XK over the F-Type. But also really like the original XK8.

to be fair what ever they had brought out the XJ was on its way to fail, everyone seems to want SUV's now for some stupid reason
