Jaguar XKR project this week:
In this episode i have a look at removing the XKR's locking wheel nuts, but sadly i never received the locking wheel nut key from the previous owner. Will my new socket set work to remove them be a hit or a massive fail?

Hi Simon, you could have after market locking nuts…. The cladding would be good, careful with the old as it could have asbestos in them….

Simon, I had the same issue with a wheel nut on my XJR . The outer part of the nut that revolves appeared to be a plasic chrome cover with just a normal steel nut underneath. I use an old thin wood chisel and hammer to peel the plastic chrome cover off, and from memory I used a 19mm socket to remove the steel nut.

Hi Simon, it's really a shame that you're so unlucky. The fact that you have so much work is also a factor . Stay healthy. Unfortunately I can't give any tips for the wheel nuts. 😢

I know that you have ordered the correct key so the problem should be solved but, for information, the only way to remove those spinny locking wheel nuts is to use a sharp cold chisel and a big hammer and chisel off the spinning rim. You can then use a removal tool of the type that you have to remove the inner nut although you would probably need a smaller one. You would not be trying to actually chisel the nut loose, which easily results in rim damage, but only a few blows to split the spinning rim which is less risky.

What a shame my love.❤

They don’t look like the original locking nuts - the originals have a sleeve cover with a line across the centre to differentiate them from the normal domed nut covers you have shown. The locking nuts are a different design to yours, with 2 locations around the circumference into which 2 lugs on the removal tool fit. They are not a great design and over tightening (eg in a tyre fitters) can lead to failure of the nut or the tool which may be why you have that black box in the boot.

You could also add some insulation when putting in the feather board

Can one of your viewers pick them up for you?

That bad for the car sales world and gives all car dealers a bad name. If he had the stuff why on earth didnt he just send them on. I had a similar stiuation with my Volvo locking wheel studs. I ended up buy a few steel nuts , drilling out the middle and welding them to the stud. Those stud remocal tools are I believe designed to be hammered on and they cut into stud so it can be undone. Why not put the wheels back on properly and fit 10mm spacers on the front. As is it somehow make back end look wrong ? Just my opinion but ? I have a set staggered wheels on my XF Sportbrake . Get loads of comment on how it improves the stance and look of the car.
