For those who are wondering why this guy cant locate the strike zone, its because today is his velo day. This is when every now (about once a month) a pitcher just goes to a pen qnd tries to throw as hard as they can to see their progress. Realistically, this guy probably sits 97-98 in a game scenario to locate the zone, every now and then letting one rip into triple digits on a 2 strike count.

In college and independent league, he hit 44 batters and has 39 wild pitches in just over 400 innings. There's absolutely no point in practicing 98 MPH+ with zero control (what you called it over-throwing) if you can't pitch 95MPH with any control. It's equivalent to a piano player trying to play Chopin when he can't even play Beyer. He really needs to dial it down and be very patient and very slowly increase his velo if he wants to succeed. He got a great changeup though. I like that.

Makes you wonder about what separates successful major league careers from talented pitchers..assuming every pitcher has velocity and movement 1. Command 2. Ability to replicate delivery 3. Sound mechanics to hold off injuries to elbow, ligaments and muscle tissue as long as possible. Almost every one of the pitchers shown on this RU-vid channel will require surgery to repair damage caused by the strain and repetitive arm motion over long periods of time. The next evolution in pitching will be developing pitching motions that relieve stress on pitching elbows, shoulders, ligaments etc

change up good, curve was nice, good break. Fastball though needs to better locate it with consistency. Not sure I'd keep that slider, I'd go with that curve instead and that change up was pretty dirty 97 drop to 87 with that movement on the change up is more than enough. Still very solid overall, just needs to work on locating that fastball.

***As Former pro Baseball pitcher maybe you can settle a huge argument among us in Port St. Lucie in the late 1990s. It was me, Al Jackson, Paul Wilson and Izzy and myself with 2 trainers that 😂swore that they had personally seen Raul Mondessi in extended spring training with the dodgers throw a baseball from home plate over the blue monster in centerfield… Now, I could top around 93! My longest long toss record was 364ft usually around 340ft range! Anyway, the backdrop is roughly 40-50ft in the air and 410ft at the base! Having seen numerous people hit them over I estimate a ball we need to go 450ft min to clear the back drop! That’s minimum with perfect wind. Usually monster shots went 460+… Anyway can you verify any human being throwing a baseball over a spring training backdrop at 410ft at the base from home plate. Thx! This has bothered me for years! The Debate still goes on???
@TheProfessorExplains
@TheProfessorExplains Год назад
I believe he could have done it. He had an absolute cannon for an arm and myself and other guys on my college team all easily made 300+ foot throws from the outfield. One guy who was drafted by Cleveland threw around 96 and we would frequently long toss about 250+ from left to right field to loosen up. Once, I got a little too hyped to throw a runner out at home and overthrew the backstop, the seats, the parking lot, and hit the snack bar on the fly. It was likely a 350 foot throw just because of my release point. If it was 450 to clear the wall, no way Mondesi couldn’t do it with his arm.

It’s really hard to make a good assessment from a 30 pitch workout in a cage but I think he could probably sit in the 97-98 range with accuracy. Factor in the changeup and the curve (the slider looks to need work before it’s a full addition to his repertoire), and he could be a solid major league pitcher. I’d grade him out as: Fastball: 70, Changeup: 65, Curve: 55, Slider: 50. As a reliever, he could be successful with just the fastball and changeup duo, sprinkling in the curve on occasion. He’s got the raw stuff to play in the bigs but is still somewhat raw and needs to work on pitch location. Being wild at his age is correctable and with good coaching, he definitely has promise. If the slider were to develop, he projects as a number 3 starter with upside to a number 2 or even a staff ace depending on the development of the slider, how well he learns to locate his pitches, and what speed he settles into without overthrowing.

Exactly location for fastball and off speed pitches weren't exactly on target

Could be another Chapman, velocity until everyone knows it's coming. His snap with his elbow is concerning.. need more than just velocity to be efficient in the MLB. But I hope he has success

Imagine a burglar breaks into that dudes house and all of sudden see a 100 mph base ball flying at him and then 5 more after the first strike. Dude would never attempt a break in again

Speed is impressive. It’s a lot easier though to hit that strike zone in the batting cage compared to when you’re up on the mound with 50,000 people watching you and the game on the line

Yep, very hard to stay "cage loose" as we used to call it, takes time in the game to work that out...even then some guys can't work it out.
