Jalen Rose and Jay Bilas trade Coach K, Duke stories | Get Up 

Hey ESPN - more Jay Bilas and less Ryan hollins please. 👀

I was in grad school at Duke 80-83. Coach K had literally started his job a couple of months before that. Only people who were at Duke during those years can truly appreciate how close we came to not having a “ Duke dynasty” a la Coach K. He started off in 80-81 with his two senior stars , Banks and Dennard, resenting and not respecting this young punk Coach much. His 81-82 team was pathetic . I used to feel so sorry for Vince Foster when I used to see him walking on campus because he seemed to have to carry that whole team on his shoulders. The starting senior was a slow 6’7 white guy named Mike Tissaw. Needless to say, it was never hard to get tickets to a Cameron then. Then, in 82-83, that great recruiting class of Dawkins, Alarie, Bilas and Amaker came but they struggled that year too because of their ages ( and they were playing in the ACC.) 83 ended with Valvano , who was hired in 80 like CoachK and had inherited a better team from his predecessor, Norm Sloan, winning a miraculous national championship over Houston while Duke ended their season losing by 30 points to VA in the ACC tournament . EVERYBODY it seems wanted to get rid of Coach K and that obviously NC State had gotten the best Coach . Absolutely amazing that Coach K turned that situation around : but he couldn’t have done it without that 82-83 recruiting class. They started it all. Kudos .

Never been a fan of Duke, but I always respected Coach K.

That's crazy that seeing coach k now and saying he was almost fired and may have never gotten a chance to show that he is one of thee best coaches in not college basketball but in all of sports

Great story and for the record I still have that Fab 5 vs Duke debut game that I recorded on VHS.

How well I remember those days, as I was a Duke grad (1978) in graduate school at Carolina(!) at the time.

Duke is duke! They are on tv more than leave it to beaver reruns.

Nobody talks about it, but I think Coach K’s religious education has something to do with his success. When he speaks he gives me that vibe.

Bilas is probably on suicide watch over this retirement situation.
