One a very positive note. Having a music education, sometimes the easiest things go by me as I would always play a B7 on a tune in E. My knowledge has handcuffed me creatively. Playing E Bm A and jamming major licks with a flat 7 (D) was an eye opening experience. Sometimes something that sounds good isn't always the "correct" theory thing to do. Nice choice of progression Pete. I've subscribed and you guys have a new fan. Pedal challenges, playing, and general entertainment. Love it fellas!

Thanks so much for doing this guys. I think its the start of something fresh with your channel and I really like the approach of teaching one person and the rest of us looking on. I think Lee represents a lot of guitar players at his level. Pete is incredible but I can tell he's having trouble articulating what he's doing. I feel like what you (Pete) are not telling (Lee) is simply that the major scale is the basis of all scales - basically relate everything to that. Lee - if you are reading - the minor scale is simply a mode of the major scale. The ah ha moment I had is when you learn how to harmonize the scale and it gives you all the chords. Then I had an ah ha again when I realized that all the chords in the harmonized scale were always made up of the notes (the same notes) in the scale of that key. I also feel like Lee is trying to put together the why of relatives and same notes and so on, and what Pete is not saying is that the difference is they ARE the same notes but they start from a different point in the MAJOR scale but with respect to the same intervals. What I mean by that is this - pick a major scale like C and we know it's relative minor is Am. Why? Because if you map out the intervals of the C major scale then keep respect to those intervals but start playing it beginning on the A - then you get Am. BOOM. Watch this and explain it like this - that's when I finally understood ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VksFM8fSfNc.html

Pete, is the point you are getting at just that, even though Db minor pentatonic and E pentatonic have the exact same notes, they have roots, 3rd, 5th, etc in different spots. So you simply target different notes within the exact same shapes depending on what chord you are playing over?

Lee instead of getting hung up on major or minor scales, learn the intervals of the major scale first. Learning major and minor and the different modes are not essential. If you play true lead and its not boxy and played up and down the scale, then all you need is your ear and the knowledge of your major scale notes for the key you are working in. This is how i play and it works and my lead is based off the chords and i play what sounds right instead of worrying about what scale, what shape, and what mode i need to use.

Look, I'm a beginner.. So bare with my stupid question ☺️ So are these jam tracks by Pete jumping from Major to Minor in the same track?... I think what Lee wants... And what I want, is some jam tracks that stays in Major, or Minor. That would be easier for a noob like me to jam along just using one major or minor scale.... Please don't shoot me if I'm way of here 😌
@SvenBroos
@SvenBroos 7 лет назад
My Analog Corner I believe most of them stay in one key. It works like this: every major key has a relative minor key that has all the same notes in it. For example, E major has a relative minor key of c# minor. If a song is in E major, you can play E major or C# minor over it and all the notes will work. You can find a major key’s relative minor key by taking the root note (E for example) and moving down three frets. If a song is in C major, moving down three frets gives you an A, so C major = A minor. Also, if a song is in E minor, you can move UP three frets to find the relative major. Therefore E minor = G major. Hope this helps! 😊
@CarstenPeterOlsen
@CarstenPeterOlsen 7 лет назад
Ok, thank you for explaining it to me 😊
@KeithMilner

Furthermore, every key has an associated set of major and minor 3-note "triad" chords (plus a diminished) that are associated with it. For instance, in the key of E major, you can use the following chords: E, F#m, G#m, A, B, C#m D# dim These chords are all constructed from the notes of the major scale. This pattern of major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished occurs in every key, and a song can chose any of these basic chords (there are other basic chords that can be used, but these are the main ones). A song written only using the major chords (for instance, E, A and B) will have a solidly major feel. A song written with only minor chords (for instance, C#m, F#m, G#m) will have a solidly minor feel. A song written with a mixture of major and minor chords (for instance E, G#m, A, B) will subtly swing between major and minor. If you play the notes of the major scale over these chords, the "feel" will move between major and minor depending on which chord is being played. You can largely play any notes in the major scale over these chords, but some notes will sound better over certain chords. The "relative minor" thing is useful to understand. Every major key has a related minor key which uses exactly the same notes (and has exactly the same basic chords), but the "tonal centre" is different: different notes in the scale are emphasised. Again this related to the chords that are being played. The relative minor key of E major is C# minor. If you look at the minor example chords I mentioned above (C#m, F#m, G#m) these are more accurately in the key of C#m than E major. How do you know if the key is E major or C#m if it uses both major and minor chords? In some cases it's not always clear, but in most case it's where the song "resolves" to, which tends to be where it starts and finishes. Either way you can play the same notes over it, but to sound "right" you need to target different notes in the scale. There is some theory behind which these target notes are, but I think it's best to learn from experience: for instance, use E major and C#m backing tracks, listen for the chord changes and understand whether it's a major or minor chord being played and experiment with notes in the E major and C#m scales. You can also use E major and C# minor pentatonics in a similar way, as these are just the normal major/minor scales with a couple of notes removed.

Db minor pentatonic and E major pentatonic are the same notes. That is because Db minor scale and E major scale consist of the same notes. I learned that shit in public school. Also you don't have to learn both. Learn the Db minor pentatonic, start at the E and you have the major pentatonic.

The relative minor of E Major is C#m - enough with this Db rubbish lol!!!! Seriously - it adds too much confusion for people trying to learn this stuff.... E major has four sharps and NO flats in the key so even though Db sounds the same (enharmonic), its not the same at all in the key of E major. And Captain I was exactly where you were a few years ago and made myself learn theory and its been super helpful. Remember that you aren't learning the major and the minor pentatonic scales as two different scales - the fingerings are exactly the same for both scales. So if you know all five positions of the minor pentatonic then you already know all five positions of the major pentatonic. The difference is the root note that you start on changes - you have to learn those yourself but eventually you come to understand that different scales exist underneath and around the one you are playing.

C# and Db are the same note
@taranis1964
@taranis1964 6 лет назад
Yes and no. They sound the same. But if you're in the key of E, you would refer to the note as C# as there are no flat notes in Key of E (only sharps). Just as in the key of F you would have a Bb, not an A# (as those notes are also the same). As Scott mentioned above they are enharmonic. It may seem like nitpicking but when talking basic music theory it's important to get it right to avoid confusion.

Entertaining video as always :) Cap, the reason you're getting confused is because you're mixing up your scales. Firstly, the major and minor pentatonic are the same shape, not the same notes, unless it's the relative. Secondly, the G major pentatonic is the E minor pentatonic, because they're relative scales, meaning they have the same notes. But that does not mean that E major pentatonics relative the Db minor pentatonic has the same notes as the E minor. It's all very confusing when it's spoken out. What you need to do is look at the fret board and change the root notes with your index and your pinky finger. eg If you play at the 12th fret 6th string with your index finger, and play the minor pentatonic you have the Em pentatonic. But, if you start the scale with your pinky instead of your index finger - playing the exact same scale, you'll notice that the root note is the G, making it the G major pentatonic. Thats how I learnt, by playing through Guns n Roses version of Knocking on Heavens Door. Similarly, with this fantastic track that Mr Collin Honore recorded, The Emaj pentatonic is the Dbm pentatonic, use the same trick with the index and pinky finger. Hope that helps.

Lee, I think your most important breakthrough here is learning that "penta" means five. There are only five notes in any pentatonic scale. The familiar E minor pentatonic (five note) pattern that starts on the twelfth fret contains all of the E major pentatonic notes if you start the same pattern on the ninth fret. Where I think you are getting in to a bit of trouble is when you start adding in additional "blues scale" notes when you're supposed to be playing the straight major pentatonic notes, and they don't sound right. Please have Pete explain in some detail when and how you can move from major, minor and blues scales depending on which chord is being played at the time. Oh yes, and don't get discouraged!

It's why the yesteryear guitarists were so good, they just listened to the music and kept lifting the needle and replaying the record until they found the sound. All ears! I think Lee's just got to give Pete the pepper pot and not interrupt until he's tried to fully explain what he's trying too say :-0 The music tells you where it wants to go to resolve itself.

When this clicks in Lee’s head he will take off as a player. Already his single note articulation and vibrato are excellent. Most self taught guitarists music theory is 5 years behind their playing ability and at some point you have to go backwards to move forwards. Lee is blessed to be surrounded by many great musicians. Please make the most of this. When I was trying to break out of the one minor pentatonic scale all I had was a pair of headphones and an audio cassette player. Guitar playing is more about the journey than the destination and finally More really isn’t More. ‘

As a self taught player I can't disagree. I ended up messing my left wrist (tendon damage and such) so basically needed to relearn playing. Ended up shifting my focus to theory as I recouped. Now I deal with having a theory level well over what I physically can do now haha

I'm loving the very Richie Kotzen-esque backing track :D I think the method of learning 'mode scales' is a kind of a roundabout way of getting to the gist of the whole concept. I believe it's far better to think about the chords than the scales themselves (this is where the whole CAGED thing comes in handy). If you have just your regular minor or major chord, you can pick at least 3 usable notes just by using root, 3rd and 5th and then you can add on notes as you see fit or 'hear' them fitting (in fact the simpler the chord, the more different sounding notes you can play - the more 'sophisticated' chords trap you into using either a major or a minor 7th for example). It's even easier in rock music, because most of the stuff is in a single key. You can chart out a major/minor scale for each chord and it will give you a good pool of notes you can use over the chord progression. Some of the notes will be shared between all chords and there will be one or two odd notes that will fit over a particular chord more than the others, those are the 'colour' notes that will make you sound sophisticated when you use them over the right chord :)

Captain Lee and Rob were the main inspiration behind learning guitar. Although rob could shred your face off, he is so knowledgable and can break it down. Lee may not be on Robs level but certainly has the talent to find tone, vibrato and to make the guitar sing. These lessons have clearly been invaluable to Lee and they will also help me too. I learn slowly partly because I want to play with tone all the time, I don't always want to learn songs or scales. But knowing that with some effort and some determination I'll become a good a player as Lee. Cheers to the folks at Andertons who, for years, have provided top tier guitar content and have probably inspired loads of people like myself to get into guitar. Cheers.

That Gretsch has some smooth tone. A nice change from the usual suspects (Strats, Les Paul).

Fairly sure that first track is in A Major/F# Minor and the chord progression is V - II - I. Hence why some notes in the E Major/C# Minor scales aren't working. E Major and A Major don't share Eb which is the note you're avoiding. A D note would work instead. Just an observation! ☺

I think the captain is a bit of a serial overthinker!

I think Lee's problem is that he plays too much like Eric Clapton. His favourite guitarist. Which unfortunately doesn't lend itself to what Pete is trying to teach. That's not Lee's fault really, as it's stuck in his head from playing that style for many years. He really needs to break out from that style of playing, so he can expand the way he plays the guitar.

I know he's said over and over that he doesn't want to learn modes and all of that. But it really is just the simplest way to know what you can and can't play over whatever key. It tells you every note on the fret board that is in key, and then you just play around with it for long enough that you figure out licks from those notes. Then you can add passing notes and all the rest, but that foundation is the best way imo.

I think I’m very much like the Captain with only fairly minimal knowledge of theory. The way I remember major and minor pentatonic was shape based. For example, take Em pentatonic at the 12th fret, and just move that shape down 3 frets to C# minor pentatonic, and you get the E major pentatonic. The notes in Em and E major pentatonics are not the same, but the notes in C#m pentatonic and E major are the same. The big difference comes with what notes you end your licks on. You couldn’t play the same lick shapes you’d play in Em pentatonic as you wouldn’t be resolving the lick on a note that sounded ‘right’.

Great series, took long time to find it, even that I follow Captain and Danish Pete for the last 2 years. I am doing better now. And Pete thanks to your review on the BOSS RC10R I got one, amazing pedal. Greetings from Chile

Great vid... One suggestion, Capt, could you use a guitar with the standard dot inlays for these? Helps following you on which fret you're playing. Otherwise, very informative.

Lee and Pete, thanks for embarking on this set of lessons. I'm somewhere shy of Lee's abilities but focused on learning as much as I can each day. I can see Lee making great progress here by lesson # 3 and guess what, I've seen my playing improve a bit as well. This is THE best guitar RU-vid channel ever.

Captain Lee, u give me hope that I will actually be able to play. I started playing little over a yr ago. I am 52. So I will NEVER be as fast as Clapton or Jimi. So I have decided I will jus have to learn to play slow and make it sound great.. and YOU are the PERFECT EXAMPLE of that. LUV ur playing

every minor key has a relative major. and every major key has a relative minor. c major is relative to a minor, e minor is relative to g major. so you could play a g major scale in the key of e minor.!!ITS ALL ABOUT TARGET NOTES/THE NOTES YOU LAND ON.!!

the captain just needs a few pages from the Guitar Grimoire: Scales edition. paste up some pages of scales and just run through those when he's sitting in the office. hell, pick one and focus on that. all you need to get down is the feeling like Petes saying and knowing/'feeling' intervals. and where to start/stop scales.
