One of the best performances in a close out game in NBA history that everybody forgets because of how great Magic was in the game! Wilkes was sensational!
It's funny how Wilkes was totally forgotten when Worthy came to LA, this guy was a legit superstar scorer and averaged over 20 points per game from 80-83. He was a perfect fit for the fast break offence of Magic. The Lakers had some very talented players on their team.
Um, a little confused here... nowhere did I say that I'd never heard of Jamaal Wilkes. The fact that I know about him is why I posted the comment in the first place... ... But whoa, a reply to my 10-year-old comment! That doesn't happen often.
Nixon Jabbar Cooper those were the guys that made me a Laker fan, I mean I loved Magic, Scott and Worthy maybe my favorite with Cooper , lol so many great players its hard to imagine they were all on the same team !
MAGIC GETS ALL THE CREDIT THIS GAME WHICH I UNDERSTAND HE DESERVES BUT EVERYONE FORGETS HOW GOOD OF A GAME WILKES HAD ASWELL THAT HELPED THEM GET THIS WIN
I always appreciated Wilkes' game - he was smooth as Silk and was an excellent all around player. He was great for the Lakers and he was also outstanding with the Warriors when they won the chip. He melded so well with Rick Barry, Magic, Kareem, etc... His shot looked kinda funky but it was effective!
Not sure I feel he's a HOFer. But .... He had a brilliant knack of playing superbly off of great teammates. Which is a sign of a winner. He didn't need the spotlight. And his teams were the better for it.
It's crazy I read he had an unorthodox jump shot, but I shoot the same and it works perfectly fine hard for people to block and especially if you get enough lift and hang time. I always was a knock down shooter, but my cousin showed me to shoot like this. It takes awhile to get use to if you have been shooting a certain way your whole life, but it helps when being closed out on or guarded up close. Keep your eyes on the rim and follow through. It's a beautiful thing I know Jamaal feels the same way.
He was my favorite Laker as I was growing up playing basketball. I used to emulate his shooting style into my jump shots... Great player, THE SILKY SMOOTH MR.WILKES!
One of the ugliest jumpers ever, which it made it all the more impressive. The fact that he made it work speaks to his talent. But to call it pretty? No. You'd never teach a kid to shoot that way.
I feel bad that i've never heard of this guy...I mean I always heard of Magic,Worthy,Byron Scott, even michael cooper but I've never heard his name come up when they talked about the great laker teams...he seems like he had a pretty good career.
shot out to Jamaal Wilkes, truly one of the Laker greats, my 1st favorite player/ Laker fans, search youtube for...... Los Angeles Lakers Anthem "RINGS"
I actually think Wilikes worked better with Magic and Kareem than Worthy did. His ability to move without the ball and not go one on one like Worthy did, made it so the ball could be in Magic's hands more. He also had a better relatinship with Magic. They never had any problems like him and Worthy.
Awkward release from the perimeter, but smooth as silk and always hit its' mark...........Wilk the Silk.......I can remember when Wilkes got out all alone on a fast break and I thought he would slam it.........but instead........stopped and layed it in smoothly........Wilk The Silk....thank you Los Angeles Lakers for recognizing and acknowledging the contributions of Jamal.
I was looking at that stats from Magic Johnson famous game 6 but then I see someone name Wilkes who was also a HOF who put up 36 points yet; no one talks about this. I still think Kareem got robbed finals mvp.
Most do. Deservedly MVP of regular season, he should've been for the playoffs as well. Out of sight, out of mind, for one game. And the rookie Magic story was too much for the media voters to overlook, apparently.
Despite Jamaal Wilkes' unusual shooting style, he made the game effortless. It was enjoyable watching him play with Magic Johnson and their teammates as they won 3 NBA championships within 5 years. A big congratulations to Jamaal Wilkes and all of the 2012 NBA Hall of Fame inductees.
Each was great. But it also exposed Philly in that while they had 2 serviceable C's in Caldwell Jones and Dawkins, neither really had a complete enough game to dominate or truly take advantage of Kareem's absence. Once they got Moses a few years later, boom!
Fuck if Dr.J had better teammates, they turn it over so fuckin much. I see why he could never win, they finally got a ring when the Sixers got rid of these scrubs.
I don't get it. If Jamaal Wilkes was such a good mid-range shooter, how come his defender helped off him so much. Was it by design? Were the Sixers a bad defensive team then?
