My way of making highlights includes showing misses, good passes, good hustle and things that dont show up in the stat sheet as well as the makes. Because I think if you only show the good things, you can make anyone look like a monster. But if you show the whole picture you can actually see if he played good or not.
Gail Goodrich is a forgotten player. He wasnt a superstar (he did make an allstar team) but he was a great second guy. Gail was a fine shooter especielly from the top of the key.
This game, just as Gails performance was sort of a rollercoaster ride. The Lakers started off the game hot hitting 4 straight shots leading to a Knicks time out after a 8-0 lead. It didnt stop there as after the time out the Lakers hit another shot jumping up to a 10-0 lead. In what looked like a casual shoot around , the New York Knicks finally managed to hit a shot wich would not be a fluke.
Gail started out with a jumping pass to McMillian (who also had a great game) to get his first out of his two assists. Later on Gail would try to shoot a jumper over Dean the dream wich he would miss and his shooting from the field wouldnt get much prettier. Instead of jumpers, Gail tried to get his rythm going by attacking the paint and drawing fouls wich he would do with great sucess as he would go 5-6 from the line in the first quarter.
In the second quarter things were looking pretty ugly for Gail. Due to early foul trouble Gail had to sit out for a while but the times he was on the court wasnt really productive. As he only managed to hit one field goal but in the process throw the ball away two times .
Anxious after sitting on the bench, in the 3d quarter Gail tried to make up for his time on the bench. Gail shot the ball from the field nine times and managed only to hit one shot. Gail also picked up two airballs to go with it. Gail did hit two foul shots and pick up as many rebounds as points: 3.
In the 4th Gail managed to find the mark for two field goals as well as two made free throws. Despite Gails somewhat shaky performance, the Los Angeles Lakers finally managed to win a championship for the first time since moving to Los Angeles. Lakers won this finals series against the Knicks 4-1 with the help of an injured Wilt, Jerry West, Jim McMillian and Happy Harriston pulling down quite a few boards.
Gail finished the game with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 3 turnovers and 2 assists on 5-16 shooting from the field and 9-10 shooting from the foul line.
Notice how Gail at 5:02 driving against Dean Meminger was called a charge. This is a big difference in the old days and how the game is played today. Nowadays, charges are rarely called and the game is made to to protect the offensive player at all cost. You can extend your whole arm and refs wont even call it.
Look at 4:21 at how Gails move was called for travelling. Also another HUGE difference in the old days and the modern game. Now you can play hopscotch on the court and the refs wont care. Refs used to actually call travels when players shuffled their feet like they were dancing.
