Because they ignored the blacks, Indians, Irish who were living in poverty and undeveloped areas . When you build cities with jobs , people often leave those areas and camp in the cities.

Why wouldn’t they be dressed well? We have to try to stop believing the typical stereotypes that white people have put out there through TV/ publications on black people, especially from the African diaspora, like people just live in mud huts and naked. Let’s change the narrative of this silly depiction of people of colour.

Do you know what I find staggering? Is how foreigners seemed to once own all the people of the sun countries/Islands and contents. This includes Indians, Africans, Asians and other diverse groups. How did that happen? Do you think our ancestors sold all their inheritance from their ancestors to their ancestors including every living soul? And what about the so-called 'Treaty'. Do you think when the British and the rest of the West drew this contract up it was fair?

Slavery in Jamaica was abolished on 1 August 1834 with the passage of the Slavery Abolition Act. The act also stipulated that all formerly enslaved persons in Jamaica over the age of six would work as apprentices for a period of four to six years for their former enslavers, though British abolitionists protested against the apprenticeship system and it was fully abolished by 1 August 1838. This date marked the start of Jamaicans formerly in the apprenticeship system being allowed to choose their employer and profession; though they also gained the right to vote, most Jamaicans could not afford to pay the poll tax required to participate in Jamaica's political system. The poll tax was introduced by the colonial government to disfranchise the majority of emancipated Jamaicans, being fearful of causing an anti-colonial uprising (such as the Haitian Revolution) if they granted too much political power.

When you have limited rights and the law is against you , daily life is about much more than your own dreams 🤔 i get it that the state of crimes against the poor is out of control , but Jamaica was very bloody then as well. We have media with an interest in selling new now🤔 deportation is yhe same as when the pirates came with violent prisoner and violence. On the ground, the politicians are the same taking care of themselves instead of the citizens. Don't get me wrong , i enjoy the photos as well as my fathers stories about time like this, and people were hoping for better days than they were going through then. Jamaica, the land we love is in the hands of a different generation but same old politics clinging on to slavery systems of the past.

Thanks for sharing with us pictures of yesterday Jamaica when honesty, peace, love and harmony reigned. That was the situation despite the fact that most of our people had very little and were poor. Keep posting these videos and articles, they certainly connect us with our past. Perhaps if we were to teach History with a different slant and portray more about our proud and resilient ancestors, anti social behaviour in Jamaica would not be so pervasive in 2023.

Someone showed a similar video and said it was 1930s. In 1800s slavery was still going on in JA.

I wonder if any of my ancestors were in any of these reels. I recognise one place it's still the same. Weird.

They had to be hot in those BIG dresses and fully clothed!!!! I'm from Florida and when I hit the state line, the heat forces you to take off heavier clothes!!!! 😮

Would be helpful to your channel to give each frame more time to view..if that is your aim.

So I think the English people came to Jamaica in the 1600's? My blood ancestor is from Wales and Frankfurt Germany and Israel it's in the Jamaican obituaries.

You should see how beautiful apartheid South Africa looked also. Clean and safe, them black folks had to leave the city before dark, etc.
