All the places exist in real life around Bodmin Moor. I took the book with me on a cycling tour and visited the places mentioned- including having lunch at the Jamaica Inn itself. I enjoyed both the book and my holiday.
That is so cool!! I tried that with Interview With A Vampire back in the 70s but it didn't work out. Lol Now I'm inspired for my next trip to England. ❤ from Texas
Jamaica Inn is excellent time capsule about a shady seaside hotel full of cut throats in the late 19th century. I love the score, I love films that are largely set at night-time, I love Hitchcock,
Love this film! Charles Laughton‘s performance is incredible the way he develops his character over the course of the film. It supposed to be a B grade movie, I think it’s top notch.
Charles Lawton was superb. What a larger than life performance. His character reminds me of the Baron Harkonnen character from Dune. Funny, insane and very evil. Maureen O'Hara really shined as well.
Never seen Robert Newton so young, and without his trademark Long John Silver accent. It was his portrayal of that character in Disney's 1950 version of "Treasure Island" that set the standard for what pirates are supposed to sound like. Also, Leslie Banks is totally unrecognizable from when he played the suave, aristocratic hunter in "The Most Dangerous Game."
Definitely! Mr. Laughton is great! I really liked Maureen O'Hara and Robert Newton together as well! Mr. Newton is one of my favorites. If you've seen him in "Obsession", you'll see why. And Ms O'Hara is so beautiful here, as she always is!
Newton should have had the part of the inn keeper ! He would have really shined. That tiny part was an insult.Spoke to soon his parts a little bigger than I presumed. Fantastic character !
Oh This man! I know about him ! My dad telling about him ! For the first time I am ready to see him ! OK friends ! I hope you are also come and see it ! Thank you CCC and all 👸 🙏

George Brown, production assistant, arranged a sneak marriage to Maureen O'Hara without her knowledge or permission. She was to leave for the USA with Charles Laughton later that day, so he took her to a priest who quickly married them. The marriage was never consummated. It was later annulled in 1941. Laughton saw potential in her and cast her in this film, then arranged for her trip. The rest is history.
You're probably not aware of it but the sound system it's barely working. I'll hardly can hear anything. Sadly Making it very unpleasant to watch without being able to hear.
I feel that the original novel by Daphne Du Maurier was better, the suspense was maintained till the end, & there was a twist in the story that has been missed. Hitchcock has also deviated from the original plot a lot, unlike in Rebecca, which, too was the work of Daphne Du Maurier.
Gracias por el dato, buscaré y disfrutaré de la versión original, por alguna razón las obras originales no pueden ser a cabalidad, Juego de tronos de JR Martín tampoco pudo llevarlo a cabalidad al cine, saludos desde Bolivia
Hitchcock was unhappy with the final version and so was Du Maurier. Hitchcock said he felt like a referee between Laughton & his business partners rather than a director! He also was unhappy with changes to the script, Laughton's performance and Laughton's request to be filmed only in close-ups!
Watch this film to get a much better appreciation for Robert Newton as an actor's actor. Also, this film is possibly the first black and white film by Hitchcock which tricked my head into forgetting that it was black and white. The reason? O'Hara's red hair.
^^ Script / plot wise, the character of Joss needed that face turn in the last act, so it doesn't matter what the deal between his wife and the agent of the Crown was, he's practically earned some clemency and perhaps even a full pardon despite the murdering. It would be a curious exercise to compare the novel with this film.
I understood the fanatics in this story with the pirates, thieves, and murderers at either a hotel or tavern. The protagonist woman gave this movie flair with her standard behavior. The side-kick actor kept his balance with this young lady, but all in all, it was mostly a pirate movie. 21-147 Egbert v. Boule (06/08/2022)
