Indeed - there was the possibility to award "special Oscars", and everybody thought the amazing special effects in "San Francisco" (1936) and "The Hurricane" (1937, undeservedly almost forgotten, directed by John Ford) would be awarded such an un-categorized "special Oscar", but no - much grumbling, so they decided to create the "Best Visual Effects" Oscar (or back then just called special effects, split into "sound" and "visual")),, which went to this film with its 33 million gallons of water and climactic earthquake - sort of combining the special effects of "San Francisco" and "The Hurricane".

Whatever you don't like about this film get over it. It is among the best of American film making, The cinematography is superb as are the special effects. A beautiful haunting song that has the power to stay with you even if you don't remember the melody, if indeed there is a melody.There is much said in the film without the use of words. Eyes, facial expressions, body language says so much. The cast does a superb job all the way around. Joseph Schildkraut, is a ham, and the thorn in the film, I'm getting over it. The cast is so good there is no best, just perhaps, your own favorite. Maria Ouspenskaya gives a truly stunning performance. This is one of the films I admire the most, having seen it many times, and never tiring of it. The scene in the palace, with lightening flashes , shadows from the decorative pierced screens, and the wind blowing the curtain is extraordinary, filled with erotic tension it is supremely accomplished film making.
@williamsnyder5616
@williamsnyder5616 Год назад
Good points about the use of the love melody. For that, you have to credit composer Alfred Newman. If you probably noticed, Newman used snippets of the melody the first time Myrna Loy laid eyes on Tyrone Power, or because he took her to the room where the man was singing the ballad. Then, throughout the film, just any time you saw Loy and Power together, you heard the melody's motif, particularly at about the 1:12 mark when Newman throws in a beautiful harp solo with a closeup of Loy. Newman has always been my favorite composer from Hollywood's Golden Age, not because he had the genius of, say, Bernard Herrmann, but because of his versatility, whether he does a love story like this film or "Love is a Many Splendored Thing,'' religious epics like ''The Song of Bernadette,'' ''David and Bathsheba''or ''The Robe,'' or historical films like ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame'' or ''The Diary of Anne Frank.' Throw in his adaptations of many of Rodgers & Hammerstei's great musicals and his 20-year administrative duties as head of the great 20th Century-Fox music department and you have one of true giants of Hollywood

I remember Alice Fay had said in an interview that when you kissed Tyrone Power you went to heaven. Can't remember her exact words as it was such a long time ago. But she should know; she was his co-star in quite a few movies. Those old movies were the greatest!

@@AnneCherch : And I don't have any doubt about it. He was so lovely! And he was a talented actor, too! I agree with you. I love old movies, too, especially those of Tyrone Power! :)

What a gem of a film. Those of us who watch these old movies get a different experience of history than modern ideas dictate we have. There was respect for India through all the characters and plot. We English portrayed honestly. Sometimes snobbish and dissolute, but when push comes to shove honourable.

Delusional. Nothing honorable about British imperialism, its theft of India's wealth and subjugation of its people.

Myrna is an immensely talented actress. Her skills are delivered with diabolical sublety. A side-eyed glance here, or a barely visible smirk there, and all done with impeccable timing. One of, if not THE best ever.
