Something I wanna add about the 2020 Witches is that there was some controversy over the witches design, specifically their hands. A lot of people accused the film of painting those who may have ectrodactyly (a condition that causes the absence of one or more of the persons fingers or toes) or any missing limbs as monsters or freaks
One thing I don't understand with Fantastic Mister Fox was the decision to have all the animals speak with American accents when the movie is set in England

As a Gen Z who’s more familiar with a lot of the more recent films, I really appreciate that you put Wonka and Matilda The Musical as the top 2 best, because I truly believe they are some of the best Dahl adaptations I’ve ever seen. I was expecting you to put the original Willy Wonka at number 1 purely because it’s the most popular and most nostalgic, despite it having a lot flaws, (not that I think the movie is bad) but I was very presently surprised to see someone being unbiased about this stuff for once.
this is somewhat true, but the message isn’t meant to be that she’s telepathic or can see the past… the story matilda creates is a reflection of her own childhood trauma, so when it turns out to actually be miss honey’s story, it proves how linked their lives are.
I think would be cool if we got a Muppets movie of Charlie and the chocolate factory with Kermit, the frog playing character Willy, Wonka and his nephew, Robben played the character of Charlie bucket and Rizzo, the rat and gonzo playing the characters of the singing Oompa-Loompas maybe someday Disney make animated 2-D, cartoon movie of Roald, Dahl’s, the witches how cool would it be in a live action prequel roald Dahl s movie, the witches with the movie, Falloween, the Grandma as a child, and then see her as a teenager, and then a young adult find out all the stuff about the witches and wait stop them that could be a live action movie
I did write a Muppet Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fanfiction. In it Charlie was a human, Kermit was Grandpa Joe, Gonzo was Wonka, Fozzie was Augustus Gloop, Miss Piggy was Veruca Salt, Janice was Violet Beauregard, Rizzo was Mike Teave, and chickens were Oompa Loompas.
I had thought I was among the minority who prefer Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) over Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). But I’m seeing a lot of love for the 2005 film here in the comments and I’m wondering whether the difference is that the general populace prefers the 1971 film whilst Roald Dahl aficionados prefer the 2005 version? Also, I’d rank Wonka (2023) below CatCF and above WW&tCF, and am curious how others feel?

Big W on ranking Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that high! That movie is way too unfairly criticized. 2005’s golden ticket winners are the definitive versions for me, even if 71s Charlie Bucket was a better character, the four brats is who I’m here to see
The BFG (1989) is my favourite. It's the only film Roald Dahl personally approved of after how disappointed he was with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
I still love 2005 charlie and the chocolate factory. Better songs, better characters, better sets without too much cgi, better faithfulness to the book and so much more than the original film. Definitely an under appreciated film.
Same, watched both and Tim Burton's one felt more like the book than the first one. There's a reason Roald Dahl hated it, and basically banned film makes from adapting his books for so long, and is was Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Was surprised that the adaption of Danny, the Champion of the World wasn't mentioned anywhere, everyone seems to forget about it.
I agree completely. The 1971 release had so much potential, they even had Dahl write the screenplay originally. As Dahl was a perfectionist he ended up taking a while to make sure the movie would live up to his creative expectations. But the director eventually took his script and kinda ripped it apart, having a different writing team finish it. When the movie was released they even credited Dahl as one of the screenplay writers even though it was nothing like the script he drafted. As for the 2005 release, I think Tim burton was the perfect director. Ive always felt that kind of eerie/cheery feeling from Dahl books, and Burton tried to capture that with the settings and characters and everything. Tim Burton is a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the details in his movies as well, so I feel like it put more respect to Dahl than the 71 release.
The brats and parents in Depp’s version were _iconic!_ And to me, them learning their lessons is what the story is about more than Charlie winning the factory, for so that alone, 2005 Chacolate Factory wins for me
As someone who is starting to write a fantasy TV show concept, Wonka was such an eye-opening movie. While my work wouldn't become as whimsical, this movie showed off all of the best aspects of the fantasy genre and for that it will be in my mind forever.
Despite the material, I think Mark Rylance was brilliant in the role of the BFG. You can tell he had a sincere passion for what he was doing, and tried to read each line with as much heart as he could. I also think that, despite the writing and direction, he has a great range as the giant too, going from sad and vulnerable one second, to adorably happy and even rageful next. Not to mention, the motion capture is one of the best mo cap preformances I have ever seen. Sure, Mark is not exactly Josh Brolin, but damn, he understood how to make this character.
Personally, by far my fav is fantasitic mr fox, beeing one of my fav films of all time, its got absolutely amazing stop motion, and a directing and edeting style that is so damn unique
The Animated BFG is very underapprecied. It's one of those rare children's book adaptations that knows how to bring to life the heart and the whimsy that made Roald Dahl the legend we know him today.
As a theatre kid and someone who’s seen the original Matilda Movie it was a delight seeing the new Matilda Musical Movie. It was an even more delight to see it not only wasn’t a copy paste of the musical or something that doesn’t understand its sources. The places, outfits, and actors are all amazing!
I will always have a soft spot for the musical and it's film counterpart. The story is excellent, the characters are so well written, the jokes are funny but don't take anything away from the message that Matilda gives. Also I had so much fun playing Michael Wormwood in my Secondary school production.
I remember first seeing the trailer for Wonka and rolling my eyes thinking it was another attempt by WB to milk a franchise. But from what I heard, my initial thoughts are wrong and now I want to check it out. A couple of these choices also surprised me, plus this is a refreshing kind of ranking list
I thought it was fine. My main issue with it is that its emotional beats are very by the book. But I was pleasantly surprised by Timothee Chalamet's performance.
I also rolled my eyes hearing they were making a Wonka prequel - they haven’t even adapted Great Glass Elevator yet! - but then I learned Paul King was directing, and eye-rolling was my initial reaction when I learned they were making a live-action Paddington, and those were incredible!

Unpopular opinion: My favorite has to be Charlie and the chocolate factory (2005), with my second favorite being Matilda & and my third favorite being Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was really good and was more accurate than any other version even with the liberties taken. Though, the old BFG has to win as Roahl approved that one.
My favorite Roald Dahl movie is easily the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s super faithful to the book, the kids are much more realistic and interesting, and the visuals are gorgeous. Not to mention that the Oompa Loompa songs are absolute bangers 😂
The kids in the 2005 version were terrible actors. Especially Veruca. She could barely emote, and Veruca was supposed to be a character you should lothe. The Veruca in the classic was so dislikeable that you actually didn't care if she died after falling down the chute.
@@SirIkeMedia yes, but the kids felt more realistically bratty. The kids in the 71 film are just one-note and annoying. Especially Veruca, who just whined all the time. Veruca in the 2005 film actually feels like a spoiled child, never satisfied and immediately asking for the next thing the instant she gets something else she wants. Mike and Violet in the 2005 version are also far improvements over their 1971 versions.
@SirIkeMedia For me, I hate how in the 1971 film, they make Mike the least bad when he is the most repulsive of the kids. Also, I feel the roboticness of Veruca adds to her clearly being never told no to something. I feel the 1971 Veruca is just a shouty mess who is only spoilt, nothing else to her character

The BFG (2016) & The Witches (2020) aren't movies I hate, but I will admit they are heavily flawed. The lack of a dark edge in The BFG is disappointing, which makes me wonder if E.T has more of a dark side, since both movies share a director & screenwriter. The Witches definitely has a dark edge & I like the (albeit slightly) faithful ending, but the overdone VFX & the woefully miscast Anne Hathaway hold it back for me.
As someone who's local theater company performed Matilda the Musical, I absolutely hated the film version of it. My favorite show that I performed in was Matilda, I was Bruce. It's probably because I set my expectations way to high for the film. The changes in the songs, although minor, made me dislike it. I have to give it to the principal actors, they did an amazing job, but the supporting characters weren't that good. It's like they were along for the ride like a barnical on the side of a ship. I understand that it's impossible to make a copy that is very close to a stage performance. Other than that, your list was very good, good video

The climax in Spielberg’s BFG was way too short. I’m sorry, but the long defunct Cosgrove Hall adaptation did it better, just like how they did an excellent adaptation of Wind in the Willows.
While I did enjoy Wonka it fundamentally mischaracterises Willy Wonka himself so it loses points the Tim Burton version is far and beyond the best version of the character. I also wouldn't include fantastic Mr fox as while it is a good film it fails to adapt the original book in any meaningful way.
I personally find the Tom and Jerry Willy Wonka a so bad it's hilarious film but I agree with your idea being better than Warner Brothers' actual movie. Thanks for making this video and I'm happy to see Fantastic Mr. Fox and Matilda in your list. My personal favorite though would probably be Gene Wilder's 1971 classic
The Witches was one of my favourite books as a kid, but I only got to see both movies rather recently, one after the other. I like how the second movie interprets the African American experience and the lack of concern of the government in them being targeted by the witches, but otherwise... I don't like the look of the witches, the addition of the talking girl mouse... etc.
I remember a contradiction in it. In the first film and book, witches see all kids as the same so if one fails they just target another. Yet in the second film it changes, the protagonist is followed by the same lady? I thought the film was alright but I prefer the first one 😅
in case you didn't know Wes Anderson made some more short film adaptations of other short Roald Dahl's stories, in a more live action format, and I think that Anderson's style goes all too well with Dahl's storytelling, I just think it works perfectly and I would love to see how all the stories were to be interpreted by this amazing director

I can't say I agree with your Top 5, but it was at least a fun watch. I can't decide is my #1 is Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory or Matilda (the original, not the musical), followed up by James and Giant Peach, and then The BFG (1989 of course). I will admit that the 1990 version of The Witches is a well made movie, but it is also the only movie that gave me nightmares as a child, so I can't say I actually like it. Matilda the Musical is wonderful, but the only thing better about it than the original is the fact that it is a musical. Otherwise, it adds too much to the story that is just not necessary at all, and the acting isn't as good. Also, the removal of her brother as a character just makes zero sense, and actually takes away from the fact that her parents dislike HER, not just children in general. And I haven't seen Wonka yet, but I AM looking forward to it, very much.
The new Witches definitely was an odd choice to have Chris Rock narrate in the same style as Everybody Hates Chris like why I like that idea but not for the Witches 😭I loved the updates to the story tho.
One thing I still think is strange with Fantastic Mr Fox was Mr Fox's Decision to drag Kylie the Opossum in on his one last big job Not just because Kylie Isn't a natural predator but the fact Kylie is a handyman And Mr Fox doesn't use Kylie's skills as a handyman to break into the farms

I like both Matilda I don't think they should be compared because both give a different view on the same story. I kinda get annoyed when people say the musical is not that great because the children are talking about how they're going to be bad. Like I have said in many comments section it's not that the children are saying they are going to be bad; what they are really doing is taking every bad thing the villain has said about them and using it in a way to celebrate in my opinion saying they are now free to be children so they are going to act like children instead of robots/soldiers.
As some who watched both the original 1989 BFG and the 2016 version. the giants from i can’t get thought the 1989 film to this very day as for the 2016 version I just slept though the whole thing and forgot about it.
I don't know where you heard that the 2020 Witches was super vook faithful, 'cause it isn't really. TBF, I personally like my book adaptations to be as line-by-line accurate as they can be, but The Witches is one of my favourite Dahl books, and I cannot STAND the 2020 film
Not to mention that I find both versions of Witches, though I do like the 1990 version, are so generally sickening, design-wise, that they are deemed worthy of being parodied by animator, MeatCanyon.

To be honest Matilda the musical is the worst Matilda thing I have ever seen Danny DeVito's was spot on but Matilda the musical oh please that was a horrible movie and I shall list of the mistakes 1 where the heck is Michael 2 miss honey is now black for some reason 3 Matilda's room is extremely inaccurate 4 and please the worst worst thing in this movie is that Matilda's mother and dad gave birth to her however in Danny DeVito's version THEY ADOPTED HER Also the mother and father are inaccurate to show the first movie Matilda's mother and father we're bad parents but they didn't show it that much and however in this version they did this is why it's an abomination 23:17
The 1994 Matilda, 1989 BFG and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory are deffo my favs. I grew up with those ones playing in the house. The Wes Anderson Fantastic Mr. Fox is also brilliant - I've yet to see Wonka, but I have been listening to the soundtrack (Sweet Tooth is my fav and deffo too short)

i went to see wonka in the movie theater with my friend and absolutely loved it! it felt like something out of a fairytale. 100 out of 10. would definitely recommend seeing!
