Our latest documentary is the story of Jamell, a young boy with AADC deficiency, a rare genetic disorder that inhibits his ability to move. After having received a innovative gene therapy, Jamell's regained the ability to move but his body was overwhelmed with involuntary dyskinetic movements, a side-effect from this revolutionary therapy. This summer ASP founder Yuji Oka visited Jamell where he lives in Tacoma, WA and worked with him to help him learn how to move his body more purposefully. Yuji is one of the most experienced therapists working with this population of children and he is currently working with a medical team to improve the future treatment of AADC children. Through front-line intervention and collaboration, we are showing how somatic therapy can be a wonderful and necessary complement to groundbreaking medical treatments like gene therapy.
