When James wrote and recorded this, they had lost hope that a kidney transplant would be found in time to save his father. Neither he, nor any of his siblings were a match. He wrote this as a before death eulogy for his father. After he recorded it a more distant relative offered a kidney if he was compatible and he was. James' dad has had the transplant and has recovered.

James Blunt is a remarkable person - singer, writer of beautiful songs, he was a Captain in the British Army’s Life Guards and served under NATO during Kosovo war. His father also served as a colonel in the British Army. James is a lovely, funny person.💕

My dad died of kidney failure, I was just 6. They wouldn't let me onto the hospital ward, I guess that children running around amongst the terminally ill was frowned upon. I didn't get to visit him but I managed to wave to him when they wheeled him out on the balcony, as I and my sister stood in the grounds of the hospital. Later when he died I wasn't taken to his funeral. For anyone reading this, please take your children to a parents funeral, or at least give them a choice. I can understand it's hard to watch children grieve and although they may not be able to articulate an adult understanding they NEED to go (it's something they will keep with them as a memory throughout their life). I am 60 now and those times are deeply buried in my memories; I still invoke my father's memory, daily, - very privately though (it's strange how you-tube is a place to confess this). I should explain that what makes his death so poignant for me is that after his death my things went badly for my sister and me - a lot of violence came into our lives. I remember my father as a very gentle man and I try to emulate this: for me his memory is the most sacred thing I posses.

I sympathise totally. I was seven when my father died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 44. I wasn’t allowed to go to the funeral. I don’t know why. I’m angry about that. I’m now 65. And it still bothers me. I whispered’ goodbye daddy “ from a neighbours window as the cortège pulled away. I’ve felt lonely ever since. I’m married and have a boy of my own now. They don’t know. But, I hope he will be as respectful when my time comes, as James has shown in this song.

Such a deeply personal and intimate emotional song, yet so universal. I was so fortunate to be able to see and spend time with my father and convey my respect and admiration before he passed. I don't know how James managed to sing through this emotional song, I don't think I'd be able to do it, even if I could sing that well. Hell it was hard enough getting the words out when the time came. But like you said, it's so, so well worth it.

@@bushysmama7488 The power of social media. Just about one year ago, James learned that his father had stage 4 kidney failure. No kidney donor could be found, so James wrote this song as a "goodbye" to his father. The video was released on January 7, and got a lot of publicity (and sharing). A distant relative got the test needed, was found to be a satisfactory donor, and the operation took place on January 29. At least as of today, all seems to be going well. So RU-vid and Facebook and other social media actually can make a difference.

Both father and son served in the army. I read that when either father or son was leaving on deployment, they would say to each other at the airport gate "I'm not your son. You're not my father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye." That's the story behind that powerful line.

I first heard this song in january about two months after my uncle passed away. At the time it didnt feel that relevant to me even though it did make me think of my cousin and how it would have been relevant to her when my uncle died. It felt like a small pinch emotionally. Then my grandpa got sick and my dad went to go take care of him. I saw my dad having to have these conversations with my grandad and chase his monsters away. Then when grandpa passed away two weeks ago, thats when this song became a gut punch. Now i cant listen to it without tearing up.

This song is so beautiful that it should become the national anthem of a nation as the symbol of what's the moor important to a country, to remind people that its our families that live in it and not ideologies. A tribute to our ancestors. And i was not even a fan.

James Blunt have done a song called "You´re beautiful" You probably heard that one. If not I advice you listen to it and give that a comment on your you tube channel Would love here your reaction to it. Have also an other song I would like to hear someone's reaction to. That is Jeff Beck and Rod Stewarts - People get ready. With my best regards to you from Sweden

I'm not your son; you're not my father but Daddy I'm not ready to change positions. We're just two men saying goodbye. I remember how as a child I could sleep because you kept the monsters away,. Daddy, please close your eyes it's my turn to chase the monsters away.
@janneroz-photographyonabudget
When this was filmed, his father was very ill, stage 4 kidney failure. He'd previously been a donor, so his remaining kidney was failing.
