What a heartfelt reaction. Thankfully his Dad is still with him. He had stage 4 kidney disease, and would not have survived without this song. A distant relative heard the song and was able to have the correct blood type for a kidney transplant. The power of music was able to save his life.

Wasn't he lucky to have a celebrity for a son... In any case, though, it couldn't have helped with my own father, but I hope the old boy's truly grateful for being in such a better situation that most of the rest of us. There is an older song "The Living Years" by Mike+the Mechanics which is perhaps more honest (and hard-hitting) in that it deals with that journey we all have to take some day- rich and poor, famous, and "nobodys."

@@witchfromthenorth5294 I thought I read the donor's name was the same as the dad, Charles, instead of James, or so I thought.

There was not a dry eye in the room except for Charles Blount. He asked why is everyone crying? I'm still here! He did get the transplant.

I just found this song about a week ago & have watched lots of reactions & have yet to make it through without tears. The pain & anguish in his face when he sang this song just tears me up. I lost my Dad 18 years ago & this song brings that time all back. I agree with you, it was cathartic.

I've lost count of how many times I've listened to this incredible song and every time, I've need some tissues. To all those who lost their dads and never had the chance to say the things they needed to say (like me) all I can say is our dads are always with us, still loving us, and they understand our emotions, and in many cases, have the same regrets. God bless... 🙋‍♂

I'm glad you said that about the pat on his arm at the end. So many people stop the video before they get to that part and to me it's the most telling moment of their relationship. No matter if James says "it's my turn to chase the monsters away" it's still his dad doing his best to comfort him and be the strong one, he was never going to let his son carry a burden while he's there to shoulder it. It's a beautiful song and a beautiful video, and yours was a great reaction to them both.

I feel for your reaction. I reacted about the same way when I first heard this. I lost my dad a long time ago, back in 96, before I even turned 30 (how's that for dating myself?) and even for that long ago this song still hit me hard. He died from a long battle with cancer. He was the strongest man I ever knew and I watched cancer and the treatments just ravage him until there was nothing left. He was the fire chief in our small town for over 25 years so he was given a fireman's funeral service, which was the most amazing thing I've ever been a part of. The line of trucks in the precession for him was over 5 miles long. At the funeral, I know that if this song would have been played there, it would have devastated me, without question.

The lyrics are, as you said, perfectly worded. I can't think of any other song that comes close to this, with the possible exception of Pink Floyd's Time. What brilliance to draw on the analogy of monsters, stories, and leaving the lights on. Life always goes full circle. This song is transcendent - musically, lyrically, emotionally.

This was the first time James had sung this to his dad and he refused to use 'Auto-Tune' because he wanted this recording to be 100% real and genuine for his dad, so it was recorded exactly as you see it. To be honest, I don't know how he managed to keep himself together. His father had only just recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer, so that's why this was so emotional for James. Both men were officers in the British military previously. This video is an absolute work of art.

I lost my dad when I was 6. I can still remember the day when he died. I was just a kid that time and thought he'll just gone not long. But as years gone by, it's hard to live without him. After my dad died, my mom left me and I grew up with my aunts. I had no siblings so I'm just on my own. I really wish I had the time to say goodbye to him and hug him last time. Forever in my heart.

Aww I'm so sorry to hear about your dad...my thoughts are with him, you & your family. 🙏🏻 And thank you for your kind words ❤️ It's tough when you've lost a parent, especially around this time of year, because they've just always been there when you were growing up. So when you don't have them anymore, times like these are bittersweet. It does get a little easier as time goes on, (as they say, time does heal), but you never stop missing them or wishing they were still here. But I do believe they're never truly gone...they're always with us in a way. 😊

I was the good boy, I did what I was told. I was molested at 8. I did not know my father at that time, he was known as 'uncle Billy'. He was not involved in my life until my mom left and I was left with this stranger that supposedly was my father. He 'became' my father when I had no one else. He has been dead since 2020, he loved his grandson, (my boy), he never "loved" me. I know why he didn't love me. Such is life.

Engaging, restrained with assured clarity......i liked this reaction. Your interjection after just over a minute of the song was...erm....substantial. So well done for extrapolating so much information at that point. However, for those of us who have difficulty in rationalising and certainly articulating the emotion evoked by this beautiful song, thankyou for helping. Like so many, I would have loved to have been able to express my love for those I've lost but am unable. Empathy through shared experience is good i think?? Well for me, at any rate. Many thanks for a powerful reaction.

James's dad had stage 4 kidney disease and would die with out a transplant (he only had 1 kidney because he had been a live donor in the past) James and his sisters weren't compatible. This song was recorded in one take and after the video everyone in the studio was crying and James' dad said ' what's all this fuss I'm not gone yet'. After the video was released a distant cousin saw it, came forward and was a match. The transplant worked and his dad is still alive. All proceeds from the song were donated to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity as both James and his dad had been in the army.
