James Bond's first car: Supercharged Birkin Blower Bentley 

They should make every car like that!

In those days the blower was only activated at full throttle, like a modern kick-down. Birkin developed it as a permanent support.

Lots of those cars were nice. That's why they used them. But, the original DB5 was probably the ultimate Bond Car. Machine guns, ejection seat, bullet proof shield, oil slick... It had the complete selection of British Dirty Tricks. It probably had full Lucas Electrics as well, for full Satanic Powers Of Darkness...

From the books, the Bentley, which the swine Blofeld destroyed. So we are left with the DB5, hands down.

This was the one he drove chasing the Drax gullwing in Moonraker, right? Great scene with the Alpha and it's horn.

I wish they made the movies based on the novels. Moonraker would have been great if it followed the book. That novel mentions Bond's Bentley quite a bit.

You're half correct. The literary Bond's first car was a battleship grey Bentley Blower. But, the "Locomotive" was a customised R-Type Continental convertible featured in the later novels.

I think we did see the Bentley in one of the early Connery films. It was a quick shot early in the film where Bond was out picnicking with his girlfriend Sylvia. I think it was From Russia With Love.

It's a bit more complicated than that. In Goldfinger he had a DB3 but by 1964 the new Aston was the DB5. They almost didn't get one because Aston didn't wanna give them one. The Bond car of the day ALMOST was an E-Type.

In Ian Flemings Original 007 novels, James Bond drives a 1933 battleship grey Bentley. The classic Aston Martin DB5 didn’t come until 1964, after Ian Fleming already died

Bond drives one of these in the books from the early '50s. So more a case of Steed imitating Bond.

@@984francis only the blower steals horsepower to make horsepower. A turbo doesn't it only adds horsepower.

The supercharger does take power to make power, but it gives back more that it draws. I think the comment comparing the two relates to both responding to more throttle. Being engine driven, either gear driven or belt driven, the supercharger builds power from low RPM to mid-range while the turbocharger doesn't do much until there's enough exhaust gas flow to spin the impeller. Both do respond to more throttle, just not at the same point in the rev-range. A good illustration was back in the '80s with the Group B WRC cars that used a supercharger at lower RPM, then a turbocharger came in at higher RPM. Together they made huge amounts of power all the way up the rev-range.

Interesting observation, but if you look at 0.39 you see the Union Flag on the nearside which is painted on as though the flagpole is at the front of the car, so I guess the offside flag is also painted as though the flagpole were at the front. This would make sense if the paintings emulate actual flags on poles as the flags would trail behind the pole whilst the car was moving forward both of them thus having the thicker white diagonal topmost at the forward end.
