Tim, never ever underestimate the ability of the French administration to find you if you commit an infraction. for instance if you blow a red light with your citroen ami and are photographed by the automatic camera at this intersection, they will search your plate and if the owner happens to have a driver's licence, i strongly suspect that you'll get the fine and a couple of points will be removed from your permit (you'll get the news through the post, like us all in France.) now if you were an outlaw at heart, you could probably put the car in the name of Mr Boo...
I never knew Never Say Never was filmed in Villefranche and the French Riviera! The movie was a remake of the 1965 film Thunderball with the same plot line. Only Bond film not to be made by the Broccoli production company. And its signature highlight was the stupefying chase scene through some very unbelievable terrain. Thanks for taking Simon Firth with us today to show us where it all happened! As a Bond fan, I can say they never grow old on me. 😊
My sister in law was the director’s PA for Connery’s last Bond movie. Connery was a stickler for good time keeping, but was delayed himself, someday in Nassau in the Bahamas. He was speeding to make up time, was stopped by the police. They asked for his name and he replied: Bond, James Bond. Was promptly arrested and it took hours to sort it out. He was embarrassed to have lost half a day’s filming.
I watched "The Day of the Jackal" today. Some great shots of Menton and the border. There's a shot of the border crossing, interestingly, where the Mirazur is now there was an Italian shop called Mirazur. Apols for the nerdy comment. Will be buying the books.
Just found your channel and love you guys! Mr. Boo I’m a Sean Connery girl myself too. You both crack me up 😂. My wife and I will be in Nice Aug31-Sept7. She surprised me with this trip for my 50th birthday last year and I am like a little kid counting the days till we arrive. I hope to have watched all your videos by the time we arrive. ❤ you both!
Cracking episode guys! Balfron Tower is in East London. Erno and Fleming were neighbours in Hampstead, Fleming was appalled by Erno's house [now National Trust] and promptly used his name as a villain. Despite Erno threatening to sue, the name stayed in the novel
I came for Ami, I stayed for Bond 🙂 Nice episode, a pity that Mr Boo could not fit in Elton as well (or on the roof :) Simon is a good guy, and it was fun seeing you hopping about the coast, looking for the spots.
@@MeandMonAmi dirty rotten scoundrels is my favourite, villa ephrussi de Rothschild was used in the film in a scene where Laurence Jameson (Caine) is telling Freddie Benson (Martin) how to spend his money. The casino scene was filmed at Les Salons de la Rotonde Lenôtre in Beaulieu. Whereas the real casino is Beaulieu was used as a scene where Steve Martin/Freddie was buying a new wardrobe of clothing after conning a woman.
Very interesting video. I suspect that Sean Connery must have had some say in the locations for Never Say Never Again being shot in Villefranche etc given he lived just up the road in his villa on Cap de Nice at the time the film was made? Very handy for him to be able to nip home for a cuppa between shooting scenes for the film!
I look forward to these episodes. I disembarked from a cruise ship in Villefranche a few years ago and we had a few bad experiences there. So it has bittersweet memories. But your stories and adventures is slowly making me want to revisit the town. I love your adventures and banter. Please keep it up. All the best.😊
True Story. Those working in the offices with Goldfinger used to take the mick of his accent and impersonate him answering the phone. One day a worker answered impersonating. 'Here Goldfinger' Down the phone came the voice, 'Here Goldfinger also' Your fired!
BTW Tim, a technical production observation: I noticed in this episode that Simon's and Mr. Boo's mic was on the right channel and yours was on the left, opposite your position in frame. Something perhaps to look for in post and swap as needed or possibly label the Mics so they end on the proper channel, I do like the stereo split mic arraignment while driving better than a mono mix.
I think it’s to do with systems people listen on because I’ve had this comment before and really checked with many other viewers and they don’t have it. I basically favour whichever mic in post and make it the dominant one unless I have to go with stereo
A fascinating video Tim, some of the 007 locations are familiar. I was in Juan les Pins/Antibes last week but sadly didn't make it to Villefranche. But I did encounter the rain in Monte Carlo, what a joy that was 🤣🤣🤣 Keep it charged 🔌
Revisiting all the locations where some of the Bond films were shot is excellent, and having the company of someone directly involved makes it even better, thanks folks. I love the James Bond films, but I particularly appreciate the Roger Moore era, although all of them are excellent.
Bonsoir mes amis d'Espagne. No rain here but we could do with some. Most interesting. Of course Birley Shassey was actually the Girl from Tiger Bay. Always look forward to your visit chez nous on a Sunday evening.
I spent a day on the set of Octopussy (sadly Pinewood, not VF, when I was a journalist). Roger Moore was incredibly nice and fun. He had an entourage of..zero. He ate lunch in the canteen with the crew. Between shots he hung out on set.
Big thanks to Simon for a delightful Bond Chase through time! Would have loved to have been able to attend Simon's Bond event, is Bond Cosplay a thing yet?. Growing up, my best friend and I loved the Bond films and books, and my friend was so inspired by Bond, and JFK's and Alan Dulles's love of Ian Flemming and James Bond he spent most of his life playing a real life Bond character. A few years ago he shared an article in Salon titled 'How Ian Fleming's spy novels influenced the CIA / Under Allen Dulles' tenure the CIA created a number of 007-style devices', which he may "or may not" have been involved with. In the opening at 2:23 Tim, when you mentioned Bond Stuntman Michael Runyard and flashed a photo of Simon and Michael, I guessed Simon to have been Runyard's stunt double for Daniel Craig, he certainly looks like he could play a Craig Bond double or perhaps Bond himself. I just checked out Simon's books, and they are highly rated and reviewed, I look forward to giving them a read. Like Mr. Boo, I think the Shirley Bassey era bond films were the best and Dr. No gets my vote for #1 Bond Film. I've never seen Never Say Never Again but I'll have to watch it now. I much liked Timothy Dalton as he brought some of Bond's Romantic and ruthless elements to the screen, and whoever has read a Bond Novel has not longed for a Bond Film true to Ian Flemming's books and and real drama of Bond and a Bond story rather than being something overly hung-up on stunts, like we get a taste of in in Dalton films. Chrissie Hynde's Theme: 'If There Was a Man' also has to be one of most, (if not the most) epic of the Bond Themes. Cheers Mates, Great Installment!
So very interesting! As a 60 year old gay man; of course I did watch the James Bond movies when I was young. Mostly because of how debonair each of the Bond's were. Hehe. Very interested in the fact that a young 11 year old Tim was writing book's at the time. Never was I so industrious! Yet another fabulous vedio; but a shame that Mr. BOO couldn't come along. Love you guy's! ❤
well, i like to do some things The old-Fashioned way. I Think he got the point. Bon Apperit. I thought Christmas only comes once a year. This never happened to the other Fellow. By the way. My name is Bond. James Bond.
You guys are just great. I actually work as a tourist guide around here and many of my histories and information about Cõte D´zur I get from your channel...great work, great histories. Thank you
Tim, we were screaming at the television when you got to bar de la paix…. Don’t drive up there!!! Anyway, you know the other Roger Moore fact obviously about Villefranche… Roger used to go to the mere germaine every Thursday to meet Lauren (or so she would say) when she was a little girl and have lunch! And finally, as a Bond man, I have to tell you off…you showed a pic of the wrong Domino 😱. Your pic was Domino from “Thunderball”! It was wooden Basinger in Never say never. Bisous Marcus & Lauren
👍👍 indeed…we know the village well, Lauren’s mum and dad live there…slightly disappointed you couldn’t get Pussy Galore into the conversation! 🤷🏻♂️🤣🤣 good luck with the book!!
Think you are putting Elton down there. Bond once escaped in another Citroen, didn't he? The ancient 2CV? Rampaging downhill through the trees instead of taking the road hairpins where the baddies were I think. * plus there is a large wooden door in Fort Carre in Antibes that was used in a Bond film...a nice door but just the door was used in a scene!
That was interesting, although a shame about the weather.⛈⛈ I'm not sure if Bond Fans include "Never say never" as a part of Bond's official canon. "Goldeneye" of course is definitely part of Bond's canon. Perhaps when the sun comes out, you could make a video, or a series of videos, on the David Niven walk?
Very interesting. Possibly might try to find out about the villa from Chaplin's great grand daughter who is my son's partner. Very much a long shot as the family is so huge due numerous divorces and re--mariages. She hasn't even met a lot of them. I couldnt quite catch the name of the villa though nor where it was exactly
Blame the Luftwaffe, "Darling Harold's" eastern european associations and accident prone Kensington and Chelsea Council for Trellick Tower (And the first two for the old DHSS HQ, Alexanda Flemming House at the Elephant and Castle)
Trouble was the style became semi-fashionable amongst other fluff brain architects (Comme c'est toujours le case) who copied it, particularly in the public service in watered-down form and with lesser budgets. So lots of outward facing, "Unfinished" , concrete surfaces, which weather badly and are subject now to "Concrete cancer, The reason Grenfell & associated blocks got the cladding regime ? I think of at least a couple of local educational and hospital facilities, still standing and in-use, that didn't get the cladding and are suffering accordingly. On a sunny day these edifices come close to the portrail in the architects brochures. On a wet, overcast day, inspiration is not the watchword.... more like the vistas available from an East Berlin or Warsaw window during the 1950s re-builds. Yuk.
🐞Really enjoyable! Thank you for the Bond tour, Tim and Simon. Was Mr. Boo following on Dirty Diana? LOL! Such a beautiful drive. My fav Bond movie was Never Say Never...and I have to somewhat agree with Mr. Boo in that the Connery era was spectacular, in terms of setting the atmosphere and tone, but I must say, my heart belongs to Pierce. The perfect Bond with the yummy good looks, the impish grin, and oh oh that body. I have to say, having recently watched them again for the umpteenth time, that after about 2002, the absurdly exaggerated but entertaining themes, sadly, became lost in too much seriousness, gloom, and gratuitous violence. Not fun anymore! I remember seeing many Bond flicks with my parents at the Drive In's, and it was so much fun to see who the new villain would be, or how they were going to try to kill Bond! (Did they have Drive In's in the UK?) 🌹
Mister Me and Mister Boo and Elton and Twiggy 🐶🐕Simon telling some good stories about the Bond films! 😊 Could there be a role for Tim & Mister Boo in an upcoming Bond movie 🤔I wonder, ,, stay safe and well and obviously stay charged 🎉
Here's a bit of Naval Intelligence that's well past its sell-by date....from the North French Coast,.. some WW2 history authors have advanced the proposition that Operation Jubilee, the 1942 "Reconnaisance-in-force" against the heavily defended port of Dieppe, and supposedly an early in vivo try-out for D-Day, had a side-hustle objective as well.. that of stealing an Enigma machine from the local German Naval HQ. And guess which RN naval intelligence officer was supervising this task, including attending the scene, waiting for his teams landing craft to return to the offshore mother ship... Mr Fleming. Can't recall wbat this specific outcome was, but Operation Jubilee proved that an assault on a well-defended established port wasn't a goer.. .. lots of Canadians lost their lives or were made POWs.
I believe Mike Nemesvri , not sure about that spelling , did the skiing shots but broke his back on a trampoline. Subsequently he’s in a wheelchair. Hope he’s still ok .
