The originator of the moonwalk was a tap dancer called Moonwalk Bill Bailey. He would do it while exiting his performance. You can see it in black and white.

remember going to a rock n roll dance at the 4-H near 12th & Menaul albuquerque in the early 60s and there were a few guys dancing James brown steps and splitting and falling on their knees and coming back up like a yoyo. It was amazing to see and so much fun that night.

What Michael Jackson had taught to him by a pro is called he "Slide" but he thought the cooler name was the "moonwalk" so he mislabeled it and the rest is twisted history.
