#captainkirk #jamestkirk #jameskirk #startrek #startrekstrangenewworlds #spock #paulwesley #ethanpeck #uhura I don't own anything. All right goes to the Paramount+ Star Trek
Yea I like the different iterations in the different time lines. I said this on another comment but I did/do not like his look for the character I don’t think he fits the look. Kirk should be a tad shorter. Or at least not lanky; stalkier and the blonde hair, I think, is a staple of the character as well. That said he is growing on me.. I’m trying. His acting is good I’m just struggling to get past him not looking like James T Kirk to me. Pine and Shatner some how look similar… Pine even got some blonde put in his hair. This guy just doesn’t look anything like Shatner or Pine or how I could/would picture Kirk looking. I feel I can’t be alone on this. But again, that said he is growing on me and I LOVE the shoe and love we are getting more Kirk.
@@zachwalton3544 I have that problem as well. The build thing is a problem for me. Shatner was more solid and was able to sell the physical element of Kirk better.
It's helpful that he's not played by Shatner, who spent most of his life outside of the role being a generally self-centered jerk. As Spock said, "It was harder for them, being barbarians, to pretend to be civilized than it was for you, as civilized people, to pretend to be barbarians".
@@woodrobinindeed, I was going to add to the conversation that it seemed like a lot of the dislikable traits in Kirk, especially in the TMP era (which were likely shatner showing through) overshadowed what Kirk was intended to be originally.
Such an understated, “normal” kind of moment for what will be the biggest friendship/pairing in the franchises history. And I love it. No grandiose adventure, no sirens going off in the heat of battle, a perfectly (to borrow a phrase) logical way to meet and foster a friendship.
I loved it for exactly that reason. I don’t remember the exact moments I met most of the important relationships in my life. I just remember that suddenly they were there. Then 30 years went by and I’m hugging them in an airport because we don’t even live in the same city anymore.
It happened to me with a friend who had to work some with my older brother. If I recall the episode in original Star Trek where Jim discusses his brother he kind of mentions there was always tension between them, they never saw eye to eye but they still loved each other.
And so begins the most iconic friendship in sci-fi history. This is a historical moment in the franchise; it’s huge and it’s done like it’s no big deal. Which is exactly how I think it should be. Well done, Strange New Worlds.
@UncleMikeNJ 100% As Spock Prime said in Star Trek '09, "You needed each other. I could not deprive you of the revelation of all that you could accomplish together. Of a friendship that will define you both in ways you cannot realize."
I was doubting Wesley’s performance as Kirk, until this episode. I don’t know if he’s doing it consciously, but he is somehow combining both Shatner’s and Pine’s interpretations into one character
I LOVE Chris Pines Kirk. Shatner is OG GOATed similar to Keaton as Batman but Wesley is killin it. I was on the fence at first. I know it may sound judgmental (although when going through headshots casting directors do the same) but I don’t like his look for the character. Feel we need someone less lanky; shorter, stalkier perhaps and The blonde hair I think is a staple of the character. That said he is growing on me.
@@zachwalton3544 Agree with you on the physicality of the character. Kirk is a physical badass, kicking butts across the galaxy. Wesley is kind of lanky, where Shatner and Pine were a little more physically imposing. I guess it can be looked at as Kirk still being young and not having “filled out” yet.
@@cosmeticscameo8277 And yet he turns up in the 25th century. I recall on ST-TNG someone asking if a person could return from the dead, and Troi said on this ship anything is possible. Paraphrasing😀
I was skeptical at first, but now I can say that I have been sold on this Kirk. There's something about his confidence, quick wittedness and his ability to do whatever he sets his mind to spontaneously that I like about him. Yeah he's not Shatner and he shouldn't be, otherwise he'd just be doing an impersonation of someone else. Rather, Wesley is portraying Kirk in his own way, while maintaining the essence of the original, which feels alot more authentic to me.
Paul has done a great job. In this episode he uses a lot of Shatner mannerisms and facial ticks whilst making the character his own. Leaning on his hand at the bar when he first meets Uhura is pure Shatner.
I'm still tripped up by how much he looks like Jim Carey, and sometimes he's a bit on the goofy side for the part, but overall I'd agree. He's another version of Kirk and on his own merits he's not a bad one.
@@DarkElfofVulcan Keep in mind that he's portraying a younger Kirk than what we see on TOS and in the movies, so he has some time to...flesh out his character.
I love the detail of Sam leaving his glass on Jim and Uhura's table and Spock picking it up and giving it to the waiter. A nice little connection to the previous episode where we see that Sam often doesn't clean up after himself and it... aggravates spock.
As much as I love the growth of Kirk's and Spock's relationship in the 2009 movie (going from adversaries in their first meeting to comrades in arms by the end of the film, and eventually to friends by the next one), this actually felt quite normal and wholesome. To think that a simple handshake would create a lifelong friendship that would result in one sacrificing his life to save the other, and the other risking his career to return the favor soon after.
I think we see shadows of what happened in the Prime timeline in the Kelvinverse. But the Kelvinverse Kirk was a little older when he headed off to the Academy versus his Prime counterpart. I kind of doubt Spock was there when Kirk pulled his stunt in the original timeline.
@@PeachWookiee I do remember reading the novelization for the 2009 movie, and I believe it was the elder Spock (the one from the Prime Timeline) who said that the crew coming together was the timeline trying to fix itself, so it only makes sense that there are similarities between the two timelines. The novelization also had Starfleet Academy forgiving Kirk for his cheating in the Kobayashi Maru test at the end of the book, awarding him a commendation for original thinking, just like in the Prime Timeline. That being said, there is a general rule of thumb in Star Trek that the only canon material is what is shown on TV and in the movies; novels, short stories, comic books, and video games are non-canon. Due to this, we wouldn't know for certain whether or not Kirk and Spock were at the Academy together, unless explicitly shown in a TV show or movie, so we can only speculate. It would be interesting, however, to see why Spock never took the Kobayashi Maru test if he was the one who designed the thing. You'd think he would have taken the test himself to work out any bugs in the system before releasing the final product. Plus, you would think that Starfleet would required him to take the test, since he was in the chain of command on the Enterprise (despite being in the Sciences division), and eventually became Captain of the Enterprise in The Wrath of Khan.
The William Shatner pauses between sentences is a good touch. The first meeting of part of the legendary crew is quite something. Very well done, this series IS a naustalgic love letter to the original series, and I love IT
Welp, I guess third time's the charm, I finally like Paul Wesley as James Kirk. Though to be fair, the other two appearances WERE supposed to be very different versions of him. This time I felt he got the brash, winking confidence mixed with compassion and intellect that makes Kirk so memorable.
I think that was probably the wisdom of having him do the alternate timeline approach. They could only do it for so long but it was a way to get him into the character and see what worked and what didn’t. They knew they had to nail it with the first real appearance of Kirk and this helped them work up to that.
I LOVE Chris Pines Kirk. Shatner is OG GOATed similar to Keaton as Batman but Wesley is killin it. I was on the fence at first. The cinematography is amazing. The zooming out of the Iconic trio quietly talking amongst themselves as we pan out to the busy bar, the origin of the entire series being lost in the crowd.
Enjoyed this little scene. And future iconic Enterprise officers meeting "organically" instead of being forced together like they were in the Kelvin movie.
I agree. I love that Strange New Worlds seems to have a quiet throughline of the TOS cast meeting and of Kirk collecting his senior officers. With Scotty now introduced, I'd love to see more scenes like this as they all slowly meet.
I love how casual and normal this meeting is. A simple introduction begins a friendship that defines an entire era not only in-universe, but pop culture in general.
1:46 "Because you needed each other. I could not deprive you of the revelation of all that you could accomplish together, of a friendship that will define you both in ways you cannot yet realize."
I love the continued subtle hints to _The Original Series_ . Uhura wearing the light green ear rings. And (in "Plato's Stepchildren" episode) she once told Kirk whenever she heard his voice, she felt safe.
Hideous?? I completely disagree I think she nails the character nearly dead on, especially her musical abilities. She's a thousand times better than Zoe what's her name from the remake movies.
@PaulEdmonds-dl2yj With Checkov Zulu Scotty Dr McKoy. Hopefully Sam can still be alive. I love to see the look on his face when his brother became Captain of the Enterprise.
He's getting there, but the writers aren't helping. The way they portray Sam here is out of character. Sam is supposed to be the slow and centered type not what happened here.
I LOVE Chris Pines Kirk. Shatner is OG GOATed similar to Keaton as Batman but Wesley is killin it. I was on the fence at first. @@HammerJammer81 we all have our firsts I suppose. My first exposure to Trek was when TOS was in syndication in the 70s and this definitely have a 50s-60’s vibe to it.
I love how understated this entire encounter is. These 3 will be part of the most famous crew in Star Trek history, perhaps even all of science fiction, and it all started at a table barely big enough to seat the 3 of them with jazz playing in the background.
I would watch year five of Kirk's original five year mission with these folks, I'd watch a series set during Kirk's second five year mission after V'ger, I'd watch a series that showed other adventures during Kirk's original five year mission, I love these performers and the writing so much.
I really wouldn’t be surprised if that’s something they do down the road. If this show does well and runs for enough seasons I don’t think they’ll just drop it when Pike steps down from command.
@@ZJBorg Except for "Where No Man Has Gone Before", nothing in S1 of TOS is set in the first year of their mission. The rest of the show happens some time later. So this show could give us that, and slip a remake of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" halfway through that season.
And so begins a friendship, no, not a friendship. This was a meeting of two men that would start a relationship that would span stars, galaxies and whole universes for time eternal. They would not become just friends, they would become...BROTHERS!
@@carycimino7699 where are you getting that? Pretty sure Paramount+ doesn’t release ratings just like pretty much every other streaming platform. What we do know is that it’s critically acclaimed and now the flagship show for Paramount+
@@pderham26 Not true...how I would love to be a fly on the wall when my parents first met...how did they respond to each other. Were there immediate sparks...was my dad charming (not at all as I see him) and was my mom shy and reserved (not at all like she today). This fictional friendship is one for the ages. How wonderful it is to see it depicted, knowing what is to unfold. "Don't grieve, Admiral. It is logical. The needs of the many outweigh..." "I have been, and always shall be your friend."
@@victorpradha9946 Ah, no. Your parents are your parents, and curiosity there makes sense, but that doesn't keep you up. You don't need to see that. You'd like to as it is a real event and has personal significance to you. Without it having been written, Kirk and Spock's first meeting would not exist. Nor would it necessarily be anything special. I enjoyed this because it was fairly mild and subtle for such a thing. Seemed quiet and incidental. They just two officers who end up working well together and being friends.
I love this moment so much, because there's no fanfare, no sweeping nostalgic musical cue. It's just an introduction and a handshake, a simple beginning to an amazing friendship that will span decades and overcome every obstacle put in front of it.
Everyone’s already (correctly) admiring how understated this scene is. We don’t get to really hear more than the initial snippet of conversation because we don’t need to and nothing would live up to it. But imagine being one of the extras on set! “OK, so a few dozen of you are just gonna sit and chat while enjoying this cool lounge music. Oh and in the corner is Kirk and Spock meeting for the very first time after they’re introduced by Uhura. And… action!
I really like this version of Kirk, but I really don't need to see him or other TOS characters. I want to see more of the SNW main characters. I also want to see other Federation characters and Star Fleet officers.
This meeting is so much more satisfying than JJ Abrams' take. Although friendships CAN start in conflict, all of my most endutring ones were chance meetings like this one, introductions in a conversation-enducing social setting. I really appreciate the showrunners revising how they met. This is far more believable for the characters. Let's make this cannon.
Most of the people i hung out with in junior high and high school i didn't get along with. I had one good friend but most of my long term friendships game from those I didn't get along with it wasn't until Sixth grade that we all became friends. and that was 24 years ago.
The best part about this meeting is that it is so understated. We see such a monumental meeting, but then we pan out and we see so many other people meeting in the same way. That's what makes the ST Universe so interesting: any one of those meetings could be just as special as Kirk meeting Spock.
Meeting and having a nice talk marking the beginning of a legendary friendship? Bah! Too subtle! This is the modern day, there needs to be SHOUTING AND FIGHTS AND EXPLOSIONS
@@pderham26 Oh. Please. If that is the metric you're going by about great Trek then TOS was never subtle either. Care to complain about that? There are a lot of understated moments in this show but because there's a history behind this universe, every subtle moment gets laser focused by everyone.
@@eddiek8179 Are you off your meds? Jeez. "If you think this isn't subtle then uhhh TOS isn't either so why aren't you complaining about that?!" I don't hate the show, calm down. But the dialogue is often a bit much and the writers could stand to take it a little more seriously.
a surprisingly more pleasment meeting then the kelvin timeline when spock gave kirk huge shit for cheating on the test thanks to that "pointy eared basterD" XD
I think Pike said it was almost 10 years until his accident. Not sure exactly how far before that Kirk takes over but I think it will be a bit longer that 5 years from this point.
this show is great, love the deep sci-fi episodes with the exploration and philosophy, and the characters are all understated and just fun to watch, pike is a great leader
mccoy is at starfleet medical scotty is engineer on a different ship. sulu would just barely be a 1 year out of the academy chekov is 15 so still high school. :D
It always gets me that this is how it starts. Neither Jim nor Spick have any idea what they'll eventually mean to each other. They don't know they are t'hy'la. They don't know Jim will watch Spock die. They don't know Jim will do anything to get him back.
Let's realize that Spock isn't a cardboard cutout of the Spock we all got to know originally. It's a show, let's allow character growth and change because...why wouldn't they???
@@pderham26 Whiny? There are so many blinkered nostalgia driven fans. The original Spock even laughs in the early episodes of TOS. Stop with this whiny disingenuous rewrite of his character. Characters grow and evolve.
@@eddiek8179 Spock smiled in the Cage. They didn't know what they were doing writing-wise at that point. When else did he laugh without some serious influence in TOS? You're presuming this works and then thinking backward to justify it. We get it. You can't stand any criticism of this show.
The writing was EXCELLENT! I absolutely love how they show the beginning of a family. No romantic crap, just people who love each other as a family, who trust each other and would risk their lives for one another. Fantastic job! I can’t wait for SNW season 3!
I was trying to figure out the music and then it hit me. It is very much what my parents would have listened to in the 1960's. It suits the "musical" storyline but also is in tune with the atmosphere you'd have in Mad Men (set in the 1960's).
SOONER rather than later, a Starfleet Doctor from the Southern part of the US will be in an episode and take a dislike to a certain Vulcan Science Officer with green blood lol
I think the only thing missing here is that maybe they could've quietly added TOS theme. Try not to make it to obvious, but something for the fans of the original Star Trek. It is great to see 3 members of the iconic crew together though, even if they are all a new cast.
I don't know about that. While it would be a nice memberberry, I think this way it underlines the absolute normality of the scene. There's nothing special about this meeting _except_ what will come from it. It's warm, and cozy, and beautiful because because it's understated. The future is quietly acknowledged, but the characters, and the audience, are allowed to just live in the moment.
@@easyalpha1 They've already basically declared Timey Wimey on all Trek canon, and frankly that's smart because the 2060s are a lot closer than they used to be.
The significance and all but....THAT BAR!!!!!!! So what do you do? Me? I'm a Star-fleet bartender, first class. Graduated best drunk in my class at the academy..
I didn't initially buy Paul Wesley as Kirk during the finale of Season 1, but Season 2 really gave him an opportunity to shine, and I buy it. I buy that he IS Kirk. Can't wait to see more.
I wonder if this show will end with the original time line starting and with pike sacrificing himself in the last ep that had better be one hell of an amazing scene
I would love to see the moment before Pike runs in to save them. I want to see Anson Mount play all those emotions across his face as he sacrifices himself for the cadets, the future of the Federation, and for Spock.
This makes me wish that Karl Urban can reprise Bones in a later season of this show. It probably won't happen (I doubt Paramount can afford him), but still.
They're doing a bang-up job of casting so far, the new Scotty is taking a little from Jimmy Doohan and a little from Simon Pegg, but he's making the character his own, same as Peck, Gooding, etc.
@@christopherrosas2738 OH MY GOD! Those two would absolutely clash! I've been wondering how M'benga goes from CMO of the Enterprise to a doctor on Bones' staff.
