One of the greatest pieces of rock music ever, yet seems not very well known.

My oh my so long since I have heard this. So good. A crime the “classic rock”stations play the same songs over and over but leave out gems such as this one. By the way Cast Your Fate To The Wind is a Jazz number played my many. I like David Benoit’s version.

Saw the James Gang as an opening act for The Who back in the early '70s; Pete Towsend was amazed by how good Joe Walsh played. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. The entire show was fire. It was like a fever dream. Great song choice, thanks for playing some James Gang.

I never knew Rusty Young was on here. He played pedal steel for Poco, another band you need to investigate. An absolute magician, in a class by himself. I saw the Gang in 1970. In Maine. Stunningly good. Jim Fox was a powerful and precise drummer, way underrated. He was native American I believe. He was hanging around after the concert so I walked over: "You guys were great man!" Fox: "Thanks man." :)

Definitely my favorite James Gang song, one of my all-time favorite songs period. Besides the ones that most people tend to mention, 'Midnight Man', 'Take A Look Around' and 'Woman' are three great ones. And one you really should check out is the live version of 'Walk Away' from The Beat Club - Jimmy Fox really goes wild in that one. Fox was the drummer for The Outsiders, who had a big hit in 66 with 'Time Won't Let Me'. They were another Cleveland-area band.

I loved Joe Walsh when he was with the James Gang, which was _another_ great 3-piece band at around 1970. This band was great, not only because of Joe Walsh but because the bass player & drummer were excellent. The band was actually named after the drummer, Jim Fox, who was a special, unique drummer. Honestly, Joe Walsh was only 1/3 of what what I loved about this band. I can tell you that I never really cared all that much for what Joe Walsh did as a solo artist or with the Eagles, but when he was with the James Gang, I thought he was fantastic!

Thanks for this one, Shawn. Glad you included the long version. Always one of my favorites off of my favorite James Gang album. Rusty Young was a great slide guitar player. Could play the pedal steel and dobro equally well. Poco was the band he was in and is a hidden gem if you like country rock.

The slow trippy effect on the guitar you were talking about was a combination of reverb, slow analog delay with not too long of a decay time, and a wah pedal.

A bit of trivia re: Jim Fox. I was a mental health clinician and one of the people I worked with was severely impaired by Aspergers, a disorder on the autism spectrum. He obsessed on license plates. You could pick any one at random, say Ohio, 1932, and he would describe it in minute detail. If you tried to engage him in conversation he would drag it back to license plates within a minute or two. It was all he wanted to talk about. Once he mentioned the president of the license plate collectors association, one James Fox. "The drummer for the James Gang?" "Yeah, him". He knew him quite well and they communicated frequently. Small world

For decades this version was virtually impossible to find. Due to, I believe, copyright infringement, the Bolero segment was edited out. Glad the full length version of the song is available again...far superior to the edited version.

I was in high school when this came out, and I still have and cherish the album to this day. Ravel would be proud of this interpretation. The album is "James Gang: Live at Carnegie Hall". One of the best live concert performances of that time. Every song is a treasure.

Great track to say the least, perhaps the best James Gang audio experience I can suggest is do their James Gang: Live album with Joe Walsh doing multiple instruments, electric & acoustic guitars plus an amazing stint on organ. It is an incredible performance by the entire band but Joe Walsh for me is at his very best, I was in awe after hearing it the first time. Enjoy & Happy New Year! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

For some reason I only had the "Thirds" album. with ... "Walk Away"...&... "Funk 49"... So I knew Joe long before The Eagles. Loved those 2 songs then my next Favorite is ... "Life's Been Good" ...Which he recorded at the same time he started with the Eagles as he still had one more solo album to do under his contract with the record company.

The Great Jim Fox. Namesake of the James Gang. It was he who invited Joe Walsh to join the band. Can you imagine walking into a Pub during the Jame Gang Kent State days and seeing these guys on stage. How could you not repetitively slam one beer after another.

My favorite James Gang song. Never got too see them with Joe Walsh. I did catch them later on with Tommy Bolin in support of their album Bang. Tommy later went on to join Deep Purple. I did attend The Electric Cowboy Festival in east Tennesee when Joe played but these hillbilly hippies had all the moonshine we wanted. My older brother was kicking me saying Joe Walsh is on. When I finally arose he was leaving the stage. Still hav'nt seen Joe play.

The song "Bolero" was featured in the movie "10", starring Bo Derek and Dudley Moore, and was written by Ravel, pronounced Ra-Vell. Bo Derek, the third wife of Actor John Derek after Ursula Andress and Linda Evans, was THE 10 in the title.

Just a comment on one of the mind-f**k tricks that used to go on back then. I had a copy of James Gang Rides Again, and in this medley, the Bolero was Ravel's Bolero. But some of my friends had copies that had Beck's Bolero (written by Jeff Beck) in the medley, and so if you were doing some substances and listened to different people's albums, you might not hear the same thing.

Personally I prefer the James Gang to the Eagles, even the Eagles of Death Metal. Call me Ishmael. Call me Ish Kabibble. Call me, Blondie. Calmy music is also within their purview. "The Rain, the Park & Other Things", I mean "Ashes, the Rain, and I", yes, that one, is but an acousticalistical guitar, a voice, and an orchestra. Melancholic and just gorgeous. Medicinal even. Bomber is my second favorite, but the Walk Away and the Funks are right up there. Woman too. Hell, they are all great songs.

Shawn -- "Collage" by The James Gang is another absolutely stunning track to react to. One of the all-time great compositions in any genre of music. Joe Walsh has out-of-this-world compositional abilities and he's one of the greats in rock'n'roll guitar. Two more incredibly beautiful and rich compositions from Joe's solo years are: "Indian Summer" and "In the City."
