I don't believe that their constant popularity is due to their marketing skills alone... or is it? They are skilled craftsmen. That ethos makes them great among Led Zepp and other great bands.

Yeah James is likeable because he is so human, he has his flaws ans is not afraid to share them. Him openly talking about stage-fright and his alcohol and drugs problems that came from that make him so much more real than someone who just acts like he is a god on stage.

James experimented a lot with the vocals on the new Metallica album, and that's something to appreciate. As a long-time Metallica fan, you'll recognize all the new little touches he added in the vocals throughout the album. For example, the start of the chorus in "If Darkness Had a Son" is something new. If you listen to how the music track goes with the vocals, it's like a flow that pulls you in. Also, the verses in "Room of Mirrors" have a spicy and sharp quality that mixes well with the rhythm. In "Too Far Gone," when he sings "Am I too far gone? Am I too far gone to save?" or the part where he adds the "oh oh oh" in "All away I am desperation," it sounds totally fresh and new to me. I can continue all day, but you get the idea.

I love how much James has evolved just as a human over the years, let alone his voice. You can really tell he's learned a lot from his struggles and become a better man, I definitely feel like being a father helped too, just comparing to how he was during the Black Album days and before. I'm so happy for him and Metallica and hope they still have years and years and years of new music and experiences to come. Rob is a legend. They've all aged like fine wine.

@@bob-ov4iq I agree on solos sort of, but not riffs. There's only a few attributed to him. He has no say in song structure or anything. If you've ever watched their in-studio footage, Lars basically sits there telling him what to play for a solo. There's also tons of footage of James having to teach Kirk the riffs to the songs.

@@groovelife415 agree to both, he isn’t as involved in song composition, but has made some of their best riffs. For instance on MoP the “come crawling faster” riff and the middle riff on Damage Inc. are my 2 favorites on the entire album and are Kirk riffs.

Hetfield does the HEAVY lifting in that band but he is delusional "We put a lot of care and time into what we do", "Not trying to over think everything", "This part isn't up to snuff". This album is the worst in terms of attention to detail and its clear many riffs were thrown together hoping it works. The drums are super edited to the grid, monotonous as hell, and loud! The guitar tone is awful and too loud, Kirk laying a steaming pile of crap on everything he does. Rob and the bass? Meh! It's there but not really driving the sound as it should. They lack self awareness! This album should be called "Potential" cause it has some good shit, just needed attention to detail and lastly a "producer" that isn't a yes man!
