there's a technique behind it that vocalists (myself included) use that is totally different from shouting or screaming. it's just singing with almost closed vocal cords and a pocket of air in your diaphragm
@@TheMayniac115 doesnt sound like vocal fry, growl etc at all to me. More like a yell, he literally just screams. Or At least, that what he sounds like to me
@@terriblecertainity No he is applying rasp but he is using his normal vocal cords instead of the false vocal cords and no diaphragm which means a complete strain on the vocal cords, which is where alcohol comes into play to help. On the black album, he got lessons and he started using the diaphragm which is why his voice got fuller, richer and raspier, but less intensity to preserve his vocal cords, still his technique wasn't perfect then either.
@@TheMayniac115 He's not using proper distortion in his vocals in 89 tho, have you not seen the documentary of the making of black album? He basically blew his vocals chords..
I would say 89-92 because in 88 he still had the Puppets voice live. In 89 he started using THE voice. In 92 it got deeper and it's the last year he had this amazing voice. In 93 he started loosing it and he sounds awful
Anyone who says James has gotten "worse" is an idiot. There are not many people in the world (or in the history of the world) who were able to preform at as well at the age of 50 as they were at 18. It's difficult to compare another artist who has sang, with the same INTENSITY, that James has sang with... for as long as he has sang. Of COURSE he doesn't sound the same today as he sounded in 1983! Add all of the "rock and roll lifestyle" to his rigorous stage performances and it's physically impossible to maintain the same voice... over THIRTY years! Well, perhaps some of YOU are able to do ANYTHING as well at 50 as you were at 18... I can not. I am, however, wiser... and wisdom tells me, that anyone who doesn't appreciate what James has done over the last 30 years can stop listening to it and go enjoy One Direction or some other crap band. Trust me, James, Lars and Kirk don't give a shit if you listen or not. They've made more money than everyone who has posted on this video.... combined... times 10. Metallica no longer tours for the money. They tour because people still WANT them to. The day they stop selling out every show they play and people no longer have any interest... they will retire... as the greatest heavy metal band of all time... bar none. There will never be another "Metallica". They are a pre-internet, pre-youtube, pre-twitter band who established themselves by performing to crowds of people and creating a loyal fan base. Sure, I am a fan. I grew up with Metallica. I was 15 when I purchased my first Metallica album (Kill'em All). I've changed over the last 30 years and so has James. Give the man a break.... show a little respect... or... don't listen to him... but don't post bullshit posts saying he's no longer a "good singer" and has no talent. His talent has proven itself for 30 years.. which is probably longer than most of you have been alive. Getting old sucks... hopefully all of you will realize that one day... and when you do, perhaps you will develop a better appreciation for what James has accomplished with his life. What have you done with yours?
***** Bruce has always been and will always be a better singer than James... Bruce is on another level... of course, I wouldn't say Bruce sounds "as good as he did when he was 18" either.... but regardless, his voice is certainly.... more.... "pure"... I love me some Maiden too.... although I didn't care for them much during the 6 years Bruce took a "break" from the band (I believe that was like 93-99)...
Very, very well said, Kevin. People should listen up, if they even have enough attention span to read your entire comment. Sadly, I'm not sure if they do....
BUT HIS MATURITY FROM KILL TO JUSTICE IS SO COOL ... ON FADE HE SOUNDED LIKE A LITTLE KID AND ON UNFORGIVEN HE SOUNDS LIKE A GROWN ASS MAN ... BUT HIS VOICE IS AWESOME
i don't like the james voice in Kill'em All...my favorite voices are Ride The Lightning to Black Album (84-91) and St Anger (i'm not kidding, i think the growl voice in this album f**king awesome)
I'm a trained singer, and have a lot of respect for various singers: Bruce Dickinson, Freddie Mercury of course, Rob Halford, among others. I have to say, James has got a very good voice, and he's a good singer as well.
Britany Lopez it was, they put out albums very quickly back then. in 84' is when they got thier legendary sound. and Master of puppets was in 85' but got pushed back until Christmas 86'.
His voice was at it's best between 89-92, but also 99' at s&m. His voice was worst in Death Magnetic and thereafter, but it has gotten better now, he had a good voice when i saw them in Stockholm this year.
Black album was the beggining of his "new voice" for me. You can still hear his 80s voice at some parts of almost all the songs from this album, though.
I have been with this group literally from the beginning. I do not profess to be anything but an avid Metallica fan. Some people argue about the Load album set. I personally think it was refinement of their skill set. Since then, I think Metallica is almost unrecognizable! So much so that when I talk to kids nowadays.. I feel like I have to make excuses. Thanks James!
Todavía hasta Load (1995) se escuchaba muy bien su voz, a partir de Reload (1996) se notó el cambio en solo 1 año xd ya en St anger (2003) es muy notorio el cambio de voz.
the first 4 has its charm, but he sounds like a screaming kid there, not very good singing wise. Load/reload has the best vocals when it comes to singing properly. Black has the best raw voice for sure. St. Anger and Death Magnetic sounds horrid really sloppy think,.
perfect analogy .... Master is awesome because its the first time his voice sounds mature ,,, when I just listen to the master of puppets part of this video it just might be his best vocals then shortest straw came on and i changed my mind
His voice was already changing by 86 I think he was getting more control over his vocal range by this point and that’s just three years but by 88 he sounds like a completely different person and in 91 his voice was way deeper.
His voice has absolutely changed throughout the years in Metallica from his younger voice to his older voice in Metallica when they recorded their albums and released their Albums as well.
I think his voice has gotten much better over time, its hard to tell with these songs though but i know as a fact he feels more confident with his voice now since he can actually sort of sing.
Listening to Creeping Death a cappella made me so happy. I love the way James' voice sounds. Also, lol @ people here trying to sound edgy saying stuff like "R.I.P James' voice". His voice still sounds good, it is in line with his vocal range and age. Plus, it's hard to expect that his voice wouldn't change after 36 years of Metallica.
Load came out in 1996 and ReLoad came out in 1998. But anyways, I think his voice is still pretty damn good. He just tries to preserve it as much as he can nowadays. I think he still kicks ass live and in the studio. There's a live video on MetallicaTV's channel of "Blackened" where he does this freaking amazing scream similar to on Kill Em' All.
hes voice on death magnetic was better than on the st anger era on dm he sounds like in the mid 90s :) which is pretty fucking awesome! hes the bestMetallica ruled then and rules now! The greatest most influential and most successful Metal band EVER! I read people dissing James' voice and vocals, no band tours like Metallica does, 300 shows a year with a career of 29+ years of constant metal blasting. Lets see any of you haters do that. James voice is the best :D
You can hear his voice start to transition into adult James at Load, from kill em all up to black album his voice largely stayed the same, only the quality/production of the recording on his voice changed a bit making it sound like it did change, that's what i get from listening to this. From kill em all to master of puppets theres alot of reverb added to the vocals, justice for all tones it down and sounds more direct, then black album added just a bit of reverb back. Then theres st anger which is devoid of all reverb lol
