Wow, this really hit the spot! I'm a super happy person most of the time and do lots of fun, even joyous things, but at the end of the day, I'm still largely unfulfilled--I feel sort of hollow, like something is missing...I think it is meaning! TY Sounds True : )

This conversation made me think of what it is like for the poor kids growing up in inner cities. Without meaning in ones life one can feel very defeated. Teaching young people that happiness is not the goal, meaning is, could be a game changer in life. Now, how to do that is the question. Thank you Tami for this conversation with Dr Hollis!

That also happens to richer kids in outer cities.

Happiness is an inner construct that we bring to world through the gifts of doing meaningful things and is not something we derive from the world or pursue its elusive and transient.

❤️ 40:29 (Real spirituality is NEVER a business) 42:00 When one belongs to a certain religion and feels very satisfied and feels deeply connected, it doesn't mean one can't go deeper in and see, learn different depths. But learn to refrain from proselytizing. Let others follow their hearts and respect their decision. Accountability to one's self. That is the best we can do. Taking responsibility and fixing our "sins" (missing the target)

Hi James. Mr. Hollis. You helped me through my excruciatingly torturous midlife crisis. Thank you. I feel like there is a ripple effect. I feel like I am having a second one. My question is this. Do some people have more than one ???

Really beautiful and helpful insights!!! The pandemic showed us how broken our societies were and it's been traumatizing to many. The fears triggered my recent psychosis and healing practices I've created to cope through the traumas. Loved his stance that meaning is more important than happiness, because meaning adds to the baseline of inner peace by knowing we are on a journey of discovering ourselves. I feel a great sense of renewal and drive, now that suffering is manageable and my impatience with myself has subsided.... Well, for the most part!? Haha

Maybe our Declaration of Independence should be amended....that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...to life, liberty and the pursuit of meaning.

Mainly written by Thomas Jefferson (who was inspired by John Locke for that particular word). When Jefferson composed his Bible „the life and morals of Jesus“ he cut out all things that were „superstitious“ and presented Jesus as a moral philosopher. I am very much a critic of religious literalism, but the enlightenment prejudice illustrated was that of an attitude that could not comprehend metaphorical meaning in „the superstition“. Today this division of naive literalism and inability to understand metaphor haunts us today. Jefferson considered him self a materialist Epicurean and was against Platonism (including Christian Platonism). And Plato believed something very similar to Jung, that there is idea (similar to archetype) and a symbol is its embodiment (the material cultural manifestation). We are living in an anti-Platonist world largely because of the English version of the Enlightenment.

I didn't downvote it, but I don't like the interviewer. Three minutes of boring preamble that really said nothing and the questions and commentary were not too sharp. Fortunately even a dull interviewer can't ruin James Hollis, so I just skip to the parts where he was speaking and it was gold. It was a shock how boring and bland it started out though.

A long time I‘ve felt that my life has no meaning. Useless Yes, it is great when people like the work I do - but it would be nice if I also could get some meaning and joy about my life. I have worked decades and I feel that I have done nothing. Nothing that means something to me.

No, happiness is a tranquil numbness usually produce by uncritical conformance to a socially sanctioned cultural stereotype, like say a sacrificial mother. People do not usually choose these roles, they dispense with the anxiousness of seeking meaning by fleeing in to these disburdening social roles.

Happiness is a fleeting feeling it does not last. To chase and seek to hold onto happiness means we will suffer. A life of meaning can also be defined as a happy life. Thank you Dr Hollis
@romanr7948
@romanr7948 4 года назад
@@zubethaburley480, whether happiness is a fleeting feeling depends on one's definition of happiness. In her book, “The How of Happiness”, Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at the University of California, defines happiness as, “the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one's life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile.” According to that definition, happiness can be very lasting.
