One of my favourite scenes between these two which even impressive is the fact this didn’t happen in the book. Not exactly like this. The writing from BBC and how they adapted Asriel and Marisa’s relationship was nothing short of masterful. We have the clash of egos in this scene. Asriel’s fanatical mission vs Marisa’s need for power. Both are just as intelligent but complete megalomaniacs. I think what this scene does well is display their egos but also their weaknesses. Marisa’s is her love for Lyra and what she will do for her. Asriel’s is emotion in general. When he is removed from Marisa and Lyra he is stoic and powerful but when exposed to people he deep down cares for, he becomes vulnerable, which he despises! BBC, James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson, you’re awesome❤

This explains it so well. I'm not 100% sold on the changes to the end of their arcs (especially the missing Midnight chapter conversation) but I can definitely see what the writers were trying to do here. It's so hard to adapt a book that consist of extensive exposition and internal monologues/perspectives but Wilson and McAvoy can show so much on their faces it's magnificent.

As someone who haven’t read the books, this scene was so intense. Like, are they going to hurt each other? Kiss? Confess their love/hatred? Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy played Marisa and Asriel’s complicated relationship so well, I genuinely wish we got to see more of them- or even better, how they’d be “better parents” to Lyra should they were given the chance (though, I can’t really see them living in a mundane life),

The twisted thing is how these two are really the only possible match for the other. Both so intelligent and stubborn, and both so psychologically messed up in different ways; no one knows either of them as well as the other (besides their daemons of course).

OMG when he says “I’ve sacrificed so much” at 1:02, his voice a whisper. Let’s just be honest and say that if this series was so great, it was for how James and Ruth portrait these two faulty parents. This is by far the best scene in the whole show - along, of course, with their final meeting in season 1.

(Spoilers for season 3!) I remember reading the book, and feeling utterly heartbroken. Right before the final battle, they both acknowledge that they should have raised Lyra, with even Mrs Coulter saying, 'We should have raised her ourselves', and then them agreeing that this battle is to keep their daughter safe. IT WAS SO SAD!
