We Can't Make It Here Anymore
An interesting article:
www.thenation.c...
Vietnam Vet with a cardboard sign
Sitting there by the left turn line
Flag on the wheelchair flapping in the breeze
One leg missing, both hands free
No one's paying much mind to him
The V.A. budget's stretched so thin
And there's more comin' home from the Mideast war
We can't make it here anymore
That big ol' building was the textile mill
It fed our kids and it paid our bills
But they turned us out and they closed the doors
We can't make it here anymore
See all those pallets piled up on the loading dock
They're just gonna set there till they rot
'Cause there's nothing to ship, nothing to pack
Just busted concrete and rusted tracks
Empty storefronts around the square
There's a needle in the gutter and glass everywhere
You don't come down here 'less you're looking to score
We can't make it here anymore
The bar's still open but man it's slow
The tip jar's light and the register's low
The bartender don't have much to say
The regular crowd gets thinner each day
Some have maxed out all their credit cards
Some are working two jobs and living in cars
Minimum wage won't pay for a roof,
won't pay for a drink
If you gotta have proof
just try it yourself Mr. CEO
See how far 5.15 an hour will go
Take a part time job at one of your stores
Bet you can't make it here anymore
High school girl with a bourgeois dream
Just like the pictures in the magazine
She found on the floor of the laundromat
A woman with kids can forget all that
If she comes up pregnant what'll she do
Forget the career, forget about school
Can she live on faith? live on hope?
High on Jesus or hooked on dope
When it's way too late to just say no
You can't make it here anymore
Now I'm stocking shirts in the Wal-Mart store
Just like the ones we made before
'Cept this one came from Singapore
I guess we can't make it here anymore
Should I hate a people for the shade of their skin
Or the shape of their eyes or the shape I'm in
Should I hate 'em for having our jobs today
No I hate the men sent the jobs away
I can see them all now, they haunt my dreams
All lily white and squeaky clean
They've never known want, they'll never know need
Their sh@# don't stink and their kids won't bleed
Their kids won't bleed in the da$% little war
And we can't make it here anymore
Will work for food
Will die for oil
Will kill for power and to us the spoils
The billionaires get to pay less tax
The working poor get to fall through the cracks
Let 'em eat jellybeans let 'em eat cake
Let 'em eat sh$%, whatever it takes
They can join the Air Force, or join the Corps
If they can't make it here anymore
And that's how it is
That's what we got
If the president wants to admit it or not
You can read it in the paper
Read it on the wall
Hear it on the wind
If you're listening at all
Get out of that limo
Look us in the eye
Call us on the cell phone
Tell us all why
In Dayton, Ohio
Or Portland, Maine
Or a cotton gin out on the great high plains
That's done closed down along with the school
And the hospital and the swimming pool
Dust devils dance in the noonday heat
There's rats in the alley
And trash in the street
Gang graffiti on a boxcar door
We can't make it here anymore

I am just 70, watched manufacturing here in England go abroad, food being imported etc. This is the most powerful song I have ever heard!!, well, apart from Amazing Grace. This is happening as we speak to our steel industry, our dairy farms etc.

WElcome aboard the Runaway Train of Global wealth concentration. Half a century of quantified Wage Stag-Nation around the so called developed world. That post WW II brief period of a growing middle class and investment to rebuild the ruins of the Wars of Emperors had a bit of genuine populist policy that had to show gains for those who paid the human price from the bottom of the never-ending Class Warfare. The House of Reagan-Bush-Greenspan-Paulson\Goldman Sachs backlash came by stirring up those left on the bottom of distant war dregs. That was Neo-Conservative E-CON. Followed by the House of Summers-Clinton-Greenspan-Rubin\Goldman Sachs backlash and all that Public Spending while Identity Building across the fast spreading left behind focused on Faith-based policies in Wall Street and Winner Take All Pay2Play speculation where our POLICIES were Privatizing, Financializing, Militarizing (even our domestic police forces) in the name of Protection of Private Property Wealth Management Portfolios. Where was the Public Investment in our crumbling physical and social infrastructure? Elegant formulation from lit centers of analysis beyond the Corporate-Captured broadcast Consumerist info'tainment REPLACEMENT POLITICS. That is where we the American body politic REPLACED OUR POLICY DISCUSSIONS with the Cult of Individual Enterprise: The only command the wealth concentrators of the .01 of 1%? PRIVATIZE THE PROFITS WHILE SOCIALIZING THE COSTS, RISKS, LOSSES of our Corporate Overlords. Compare tax rates on the UBER WEALTHY under Eisenhower (no angel was his administrations that used our Post WW II agencies of Global Intel and Propaganda to overthrow Third World Democratic transformation from Guatemala to Iran in partnership with the biggest Investor Networks\Stock Market IMPERIAL FORCES of our 20th Century of Genocide and Rapacious Raj). Meanwhile, U.S. Tax Payers rebuild the centuries of neglected homelands while these Euro-Asian Empires were left in ruins for Washington's Marshall Plan dba European Recovery Program of Wall Street\Washington's Neo-Feudal Lords of Finance, Tech, TeleComm and Life Sciences. All costs to stick on the U.S. tax-payers' tab. And the benefits of Public Funding of Private Profits into small networks of investors did for a decade or so under Eisenhower and Kennedy family constituent Camelot. Camelot's class structured Infrastructure and high tech needs along with military projection grew. But while the receivers of Washington and Wall Street investment tsunamis built Social Democratic safety nets for their latter 20th Century nation-states, we in the U.S. bought into Washington to Wall Street Cold War weaponization of E-CON policies that kept monetarist inflation under control by keeping the boot of our trans-national oligarchs on domestic U.S. Austerity and Social Welfare programs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Plan The first U.S. generation in White Males Only History\Herstory that only by the 1950's were able to afford to send most of their kids to any form of Higher Education, whether colleges or trade schools. www.wweek.com/news/2023/03/22/in-years-first-six-months-county-spent-less-than-half-its-budgeted-metro-homeless-services-money/ www.wweek.com/news/2023/07/27/seattle-is-producing-housing-at-a-clip-superior-to-portlands/ Back about 20 years ago, James McMurtry was doing much better articulating all this in song far better than today's RU-vid Viral Hit of the past few weeks by unknown country music indie song blogger Oliver Anthony and the Populism that attracts all those under the boot of the tiny group of "Rich Men North of Richmond." tasteofcountry.com/oliver-anthony-rich-men-north-of-richmond-lyrics/ kboo.fm/media/117590-confronting-divisions-left-david-rovics Neither song as President Trump declines to join the GOP debate so he can remain above the fray his unexamined POLICY RECORD like BIDEN'S DNC unexamined POLICY RECORD need not be any part of the next installment of the coming Imperial Electoral Charade as Wealth continues to concentrate, infrastructure continues to crumble and Public\Private Partnerships continue to enrich those who are purportedly solving the Runaway Train and Great Wall Street Corrections of out GREATER DEPRESSION and SPRAWLING NORMALIZED HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS alongside the empty but always increasing in value LUXURY CONDO Developments at Market Rate that too few wages to sustain such a HOUSING MARKET can ever support: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6juSABUfnUg.html PUSH - ( some excerpts from the documentary ) Tiktaks Point of View 352 subscribers 1,569 views Sep 1, 2021 Some excerpts from the documentary "PUSH" (2019) (full doc @ "Push | TVO Docs" on RU-vid) Exploring why people cannot be allowed to live in cities... Housing is increasingly becoming a financial asset, including low-income and social housing. This process of “financialisation” of real estate assets is subtracting resources from middle and lower-income households. Investment into real estate assets by financial firms has been especially pronounced in large cities and it has intensified in the last decade. This can have perverse consequences on housing markets, e.g. properties can create value when they are unoccupied. This song is the anthem of modern America as she enters the destruction phase on the course of empire.
@Hotrodford

I see the Stars and Stripes going down and it hurts because I remember the America I grew up in and it was so much different and better than what it is today. Being raised by the Greatest Generation and their fathers who fought in WWI and listening to their stories of the horse and buggy days. These weren’t stories read in a book these were people that actually witnessed the closing of the frontier to modern society. Like my grandfather that saw his first automobile and airplane that crashed and the pilot was killed. He Saw a retired Texas Ranger gunned down on the street probably out of vengance who was reaching for his pistol that wasn’t there anymore as he lay dying. Our generation was lucky to have been able to talk and interact with men that taught us the clear distinction between right and wrong and those great changes that they experienced in their time. That’s why it hurts to see what’s happening to this country and a number of those that we put in office to basically be traitors

This is a great song, a great video, and a tragic state of reality. I agree with Edmund Burke: "No man, who is not inflamed by vain-glory into enthusiasm, can flatter himself that his single, unsupported, desultory, unsystematic endeavours are of power to defeat the subtle designs and united Cabals of ambitious citizens. When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." And John Stuart Mill: "Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing." But what to do?

This is my anthem for 2024 elections! Wow! I was born in 1953, and the night Reagan was elected, I felt a stone in my stomach so hard and heavy, I knew we were screwed. Before Walmart, before he broke the unions by 'firing' the ATCs, before Ronald McDonald. When our Main St was busy with small family shops, when a GI could get a decent plant job, buy a small home, and send his kids to the State Uni. When regular working families enjoyed a simpler life, one car but buses or trains running, one TV (only 4 channels), a small house (average 1200sqft,) not McMansions. No tricked out Dakota or Lexus, but a solid Buick made with steel, not plastic! Yeah things were very shitty then too. But in 1960, JFK came in and things were changing. They stopped in 63. Then we got rolling against Nam, nukes, pro Civil Rights, women's and gay equity. Then MLK and RFK were murdered, we got mad....Social change always creates turmoil. But never lose sight of the ball. By the people for the people for all the people. Thank you!
