Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother, Jerry Jeff Walker.

Early Music Video using a cut from the Viva Terlingua Album, with thanks to Jerry Jeff Walker for the Luckenbach Performance and Ray Wylie Hubbard for the song. Up Against the Wall had become a San Antonio High School Anthem for us in 1974 when we made this fun little music video (S-8 Film with Audio Cassette playback ) for an English class media project. Everyone else that year was doing slide shows of pretty sunsets to Neal Young Music and such, so we did Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother.
Thanks to the Mayan Dude Ranch for use of their western town set, to Mr. Edwards of Pipe Creek Texas for use of his barn and of course to Jerry Jeff and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Enjoy some young film stars in their debut performances of a song they knew so well, so well, so well.

My first intro to Jerry Jeff was "Backsliders Wine." "Redneck Mother" sealed the deal. 86-years-old now, haven't forgotten the words, or the good times.

I am from Manchester, England. I first heard this as a New Riders of the Purple Sage version around 1978. It just stuck with me. Fast forward to 2017 and a bar in Dallas, Texas with two local lads playing a selection of guitars and I heard that intro, you know the one. Total recall. I was up there singing it, a few words changed and missed here and there but they knew I knew. The Lone Star shone brightly that night.

Ray Wylie Hubbard knocked it out of the park with this song. 20 years ago, this song became the door that lead me from Nashville's idea country music to learning about folks like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Billy Joe Shaver, and of course, the immortal Jerry Jeff. So much heart, soul, and honesty in music that never sees country radio.

Jerry Jeff one of that army of Texas singers, song writers and guitarists. Sad to say many are gone, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley and lots more. We still have a few left, Steve Earle, Willy Nelson, etc. we should cherish them while they are still here. They are national treasures.

While I do like the scene from That 70’s Show with this song. I also like this song bc it was one of my dad’s favorite songs. Remember being 10 and him blaring this while we were driving to his job so he could pick up his check and some dude cutting him off and throwing up the “I do what I want” gesture and dad making the guy pull over so he could throw some fists with him. Dude who cut him off had a “Coexist” and “ Love is the answer” bumper stickers, I still remember my dad saying that he was about to give him a lesson in coexistence by showing him some tough love

But Jacky Jack strikes a chord in my soul like Elvis, Beatles, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, etc. NEVER DID! Of course their all great muscians, but some like JJW hit you in your soul for reasons you cannot explain. That's what makes him so special. He's not the best guitar player, or singer, or greatest looking. But he is absolutely perfect at being Jerry Jeff Walker. That to me is incredible, and why I love him so much. Been a rusted on fan since the 70's....when visited Austin, called into Charlie Dunn's past workplace, but couldn't get to the back of Capital Saddlery,, guess Buck Steiner was long gone, but ordered a pair of custom boots and showed the staff a photo of Jerry Jeff's boots and got a copy sent to me in Australia, where I live. Next went to the current iteration of Mannys Hat Shop. Ordered " An Old Friend "- that too was shipped home some time after returning home. The Old Friend has been displayed/ mounted on a wall in my study. As with Jerry Jeff referring to Manny, it will "keep him alive in the room ". How sad to lose a singer, songwriter, storyteller who clearly never sought out fortune and fame. Have been playing and listening to his music since the 70s and his tunes, characters and stories will continue to travel with me as an important part of my life Thanks for everything Jerry Jeff.

I've seen all the Texas guys at Davids.Townes, Rusty, Buckwheat, Ray, Guy, Fromholz, Murphy, and so many more.Got to sit and drink with them after the doors were locked and they loaded out. Those were the good old days.

The one time I went to a Jerry Jeff concert I will always remember how drunk he was and music was great. I grew listening to all music. That's was a good thing because I never got bored. Nowadays I listen music on RU-vid with Bluetooth wireless headphones and lately that's all I do since the pandemic and life is great

So, a remembrance from Ray courtesy of the Texas Monthly by: Michael Hall, Andy Langer, Jeff Salamon, John Spong, Katy Vine and Christian Wallace Dated - Oct 26, 2020 Ray Wylie Hubbard is a singer-songwriter who grew up in Dallas. He lives in Wimberley. The thing about Jerry Jeff that stands out to me is that he was a great songwriter but also very gracious to other songwriters. Like on ¡Viva Terlingua!, he put me and Gary Nunn on there, and a couple of Guy Clark songs, before any of us were doing anything. So the first thing you hear when he plays my song on that record, “Redneck Mother,” is Bob Livingston saying, “This song is by Ray Wylie Hubbard.” Well, the record label wanted that off. They said, “If this gets played on the radio, everybody’s going to think that’s Ray Wylie singing it.” But Jerry said, “Nah, leave it on there.” So there I am. And to me, ¡Viva Terlingua! is the definitive progressive country, outlaw country, Texas music record. It still holds up. It still influences so many people, and not just because of the songs but because of the attitude. Jerry Jeff was like the Sam Peckinpah of music. He was going to do it his way. I mean, who records in a beer joint in the middle of nowhere called Luckenbach, with hay bales for sound baffles? But that album is still magic today. You can feel it, sense it. Losing him is gonna hurt for a while. But the legacy is going to be his songwriting, his belief in other songwriters, and his spirit with the way he would do things, his whole cantankerous coolness.
