Former Prime Minister Theresa May will stand down as an MP at the next General Election.
She said she had made the "difficult decision" to step down from her position after representing Maidenhead for 27 years.
Ms May, who was first elected in 1997, said she had always tried her hardest to "respond to the needs of local people and the local area".
James O'Brien reacts to the news and breaks down why he doesn't feel sorry for her.

She was a monster as Home Secretary. I moved to the UK from Australia in 2006 to pursue my dream career. I was here on an Ancestry Visa thanks to my English-born grandfather. In her obsession to get rid of all foreigners from the UK, she was looking into abolishing the Ancestry Visa and sending everyone who was legally living in the UK on that visa back to where they’d come from. I was reading the papers every day to be up to date on this obsession of her’s. The “GO HOME!! YOU’RE NOT WELCOME HERE” mobile billboards and her threats of abolishing every visa known to humanity gave me and every other legal immigrant sleepless nights. After almost 10 years building a life in the UK, I was expecting a letter to arrive giving me 1 week to “quit the United Kingdom” - something she did to thousands of workers when she abolished the Tier 1 visa. (I spoke to an Indian gentleman who had lived in the UK for 30 years on a Tier 1 visa and was given 1 week to go back to India.) She’s an uncaring monster devoid of any trace of humanity.

@algernonsidney8746 7 месяцев назад
That all depends on what your definition of "hate language" is. My point is that her language was PR stunt. Many of the immigrants from non English speaking countries could not even understand what her office was saying . It was actually designed to give the British population the impression that her government was tackling immigration when in fact the opposite was the case. As someone who believes in free speech I am against people facing criminal charges for saying things that others might find offensive, unless if it's an incitement to extrajudicial violence, lying in court or selling fraudulent products.@@davidcolin6519

That all depends what your definition of "hate language is". My previous point was that her language which was never aimed at immigrants who could not speak English, was simply PR designed to trick the British public into thinking that her government was cracking down on immigration when in fact the opposite was the case. Personally as someone who supports free speech I support the right of individuals to say things that others might find offensive.@@davidcolin6519
@davidcolin6519
@davidcolin6519 7 месяцев назад
@@algernonsidney8746 I have no problem with the freedom of speech but, just like other freedoms, all countries recognise that the freedom of speech has its limits. And when the freedom of speech is used to incite xenophobia and hatred, it classifies as hate speech. And that is something that even the USA recognises. The logical, and it would appear inevitable result of unleashing a government policy that was deliberately intended to make foreign people feel uncomfortable in the UK, was the hatred and xenophobia that led to Brexit. No British government since 1945 had so openly provoked xenophobia in the general population. The idea that this was somehow just "Offensive" is simply B.S. As you yourself point out, it was designed as much for PR as to affect the people it was purportedly aimed at, ie it was deliberately aimed at encouraging the general population to be antagonistic (at minimum) towards foreign people. I simply do not understand how you can possibly say that it wasn't intended to stir up hatred.

@@chatham43 She told a nurse there was no magic money tree to pay them more as costs of living were rising back in 2017. Before she found millions of pounds to bribe the DUP into keeping her government afloat, before the hundreds of millions the Tories have since found to funnel to their donors and mates. The VIP Covid lane, the millions paid to Tory donors who just so happen to own the companies contracted to find asylum seekers hotel spaces, the millions wasted on not sending anyone to Rwanda.

It's a matter of comparison. I thought Theresa May was terrible until Boris. I thought Boris was the worst you could get, until Truss. I'd still stand by that on a ranking scale today. It's being unable to make this comparison between people, that lead to a certain commentator spending all of his time bashing Corbyn, when the alternative to him on the table was Boris.

I hate any justification that's based on "At least they're not as bad as...", because it's using the wrong frame of reference. We shouldn't judge something, someone or ourselves by comparison to something or someone worse. That's just apologetics. Don't compare down, compare up to someone admirable and inspirational. A high comparison baseline is the route to improvement, a low baseline is an excuse.

As a Labour supporter, I think that May did NOT believe in Brexit. She tried to block it. Cameron lit a fuse that the government is still trying to extinguish! ...When can (any government?) How long will it be before we have a coherent government and opposition can work towards rejoin? I will celebrate if Labour become the new government and the Lib Dem's are in opposition!
