This classic lecture on skepticism was given by James Randi on March 22, 1992 at the inaugural session of the Distinguished Science Lecture Series hosted by Michael Shermer and presented by The Skeptics Society in California (1992-2015).
James Randi in Memoriam, 1928-2020
www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/20-1...
James Randi presents an amazing first-hand analysis of astonishing claims encountered in his European visit. New-found freedoms stimulate rampant pseudoscientific practices in eastern bloc nations. With wit and wonderfully illustrative examples, Randi teaches us several lessons on the scientific investigation of unusual claims.
Famed magician and investigator of paranormal claims, Randi is best selling author of The Faith Healers and Flim Flam! Randi was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Grant for his investigation of faith healers.

This might sound like an overstatement.... but.... James Randi is one of the most important figures in modern human history. His skepticism and ability to “debunk” pseudoscience, supernatural claims and charlatans helped keep these fakers on their toes. Thankyou Randi. You were the BOSS

Not really. In fact there are a LOT of ppl like him these days. His motivation for 'debunking' the paranormal was that he tried desperately for decades to become famous as a stage magician but was never accepted because of his homosexuality. That in itself is a shame, but he used that bitterness as a tool to attack those who were popular. Yeah he busted fraud 'televangelists' and 'psychics' like Uri Geller, but they were fooling no one but the foolish, and it takes a fool to feel the need to say "Uh uh. Thats not true!". Does anyone go to a David Copperfied or David Blaine show and genuinely believe theyre performing 'magic'? No. Its entertainment and its sad that Randi expended an entire life and talent in a bitter pursuit to attack people because he was rejected. Its no different than someone who watches pro wrestling and feels they have to announce that it's fake. There is no one like Randi anymore bc being gay is much more accepted now than it was then. People are free to be whomever they are so this brand of ignorant bitterness is fortunately obsolete.

James changed my life, I’ll miss him. I grew up in rural Appalachia with all the usual superstitious BS that is normal for that area like religion, ghosts, and mountain voodoo type nonsense. I never could really get the “feeling” we were all supposed to get by being godly in church, it all seemed like crap but there was fear I was wrong. One single issue of skeptic magazine brought it all into focus. Thanks James.

This is how you are supposed to give a lecture. You give them ways to remain entertained and to keep their attention on you. You break the ice with things like the jokes and scenarios to give them a more comfortable atmosphere. Then you explain it in a way to educate them but keeping it within light hearted humor and interaction with the audience. This is a blueprint that more people should follow. This is how you know that even after the lecture, though you may have made jokes and laughed, there was still a lesson taught or advice given that they will be able to utilize and remember throughout their lives.

James Randi is the reason why I got my kids a book about "magic". If they understand how people get fooled, maybe they will not get fooled (at least not that easily). Also, it is important to remember that nature can play "magic tricks" too, so if you cannot explain some phenomenon, maybe it is just a trick you didn't understand.

17:44 whenever i reached to top of the stairs in the hallway where i live, someone seemed to be whistling at me. it was never enough of a thing for me to worry about, so i'd forget and then be surprised each time, i'd get to the top of the stairs and before i open the hallway door, i get whistled at. this carried on for weeks, cause i'd never think twice about it, it was just a weird thing that happened. then one day i had been talking to friend about it and remembered to check it out this time, so i get to the door and yep, i get whistled at, but, only when i press my foot in a certain place - it was a squeaky floorboard. these sorts of things happen all the time, and if you want to believe a poltergeist is whistling at you, you probably will, you have to actually wonder if you could be mistaken though to be sure.
@Onoesmahpie
@Onoesmahpie Год назад
This issue of failing to exhaust all possible causes for a phenomena, or failing to correctly identify the phenomena, is exactly the problem that paranormal believers fail to appreciate. Our brains are designed to come to quick, intuitive conclusions, which in many cases are correct but in most cases, especially those of a complex subject matter with tons of possibilities to ponder and subsequent questions to ask, our brains short-change us and bypass the logical reasoning route in lieu of a quicker, more comfortable route of intuition. We couldn't survive in the wild if we spent 15 minutes investigating every `squeaky floorboard` to fully and rigorously satisfy our curiosity. Instead our brain tries to let us have the cake and eat it too: we get to come to a conclusion our brain interprets as correct, and can in some cases function to keep us safe (the whistle was scary, right?) but we don't have to go through the lengthy and mentally demanding process of logical reasoning. The price of course is that the methods used to come to the conclusion are less than sound. Not a problem whenever we are hunting for food in a post apocalyptic wasteland and the ominous whistle that we presumably avoid is actually a squeaky floorboard, but when we advance to the point that careful, rigorous reasoning becomes very important and a lack of it can actually lead us very astray and at worst cause serious harm or death, we are in a bind because our brains are evolutionarily adapted to avoid careful logical reasoning in so many situations.

Many years ago I used to frequently see in newspapers and magazines quotes from this guy "shooting down" claims of paranormal/supernatural events. I imagined that, apart from his spectacularly successful magician career, he was bored and so lived for the thrill of trying to cruelly squash more ordinary sorts of people's happiness and hopes for the idea of magical tales coming real or a spirit world or an afterlife. I decided he was mainly just a killjoy and so ignored his appearances on TV. Now i understand and greatly appreciate his real purpose of wanting to find out the truth behind sensational accounts, gossip, rumors, folklore, superstitions, and religious myths, that so many people automatically believe just because they are in print, and his sense of humor. I love his hilarious analysis of Santa and the flying reindeer. He's much missed and so hard to replace. We need many more people like him in the world. Having had some very strange experiences myself, I'd still like there to be actual proof of paranormal stuff, but i'm not going to worry about it!

This was early 1990’s and there was still much woo-woo in science. Like, government was still paying scientists to explore ESP for military use. And scientists were either deluding themselves into it, or not being up front with the truth, for an easy payday. Taxpayers paid for a lot of nonsense from the 1960’s through the… well, now. Pretty sure that’s what he was referring to, scientists being influenced with a financial or other influencing incentive to find enough evidence to justify more research (I.e. job security). And he couldn’t talk about it because it was told to him in confidentiality and some of the “research” was still classified.

You can look at the videos of the Chinese port that exploded and it's VERY visible in videos of the ammonium nitrate explosion that happened recently in Beirut. You can see windows shake and just as people turn around, POW! the windows explode from the pressure wave in air arriving.

He had such a love hate relationship with Oz. Don Lane never ever forgave him. He will definitely be missed but he had a really good innings. Vale Randi

Funny talk, but as a matter of fact I've heard Phd's say things like: "That's not my field of study" or "That's still being debated." Scientists in particular make it a virtue to admit when they don't know or are proven wrong.

The heart of the conflict lies in Scientific Rationalism. Mathematics has proven itself bounded, which means that on an ontological plane, all subjects accepting it as a lemma are equally constrained. A bound separates the ontological into two domains, that which it contains and that which it excludes and psychology, dealing with the emotional, is beyond the pale, as is the rest of third sector medicine. I'll now focus on the Koestler Institute's researches into ESP at the University of Edinburgh, which have pretty much concluded in frustration that although they're fairly sure it exists, it resolutely won't sit up and beg as any good Helmontian Science should. They can't get it to perform like a trained seal. It hasn't occurred to them that because it's in the mind, using scientific method is as pointless as going into a shop and asking for two bottles of hatred, a kilo of love and sixpence-worth of indifference! OK, many's the apprentice fallen foul of being sent to stores in search of a long felt want or a much-needed weight, but that's as close as you'll get. Randi's disproving the quacks, which is fair enough, but my gift is close to ESP, and it's not something in my control. Harley Street was watching when it did it's party piece, they call it hyper-perception, which fits with Craig Wright's thought on the nature of genius: a genius sees more broadly, finds the patterns first, in a process akin to Arthur C Clarke's definition of magic as advanced technology.

How does the ESP Card Trick work? I've watched him doing the same trick during three decades and it baffles me every time. Even more so, as he keeps telling "me", that the trick is oh so easy

I have a guess. When he gives the “stranger” the cards notice he says shuffle them face down. And he says slap the two of them together so that you don’t see what they are. This is to suggest that the person he gave them to couldn’t be in on the trick. Because they saw him shuffle them and then select two cards at random. He then says put them in the envelope and drop the other 3 on the floor face down. I think the “stranger” at that point switches the cards to three known cards that he drops. When Randi goes back to the desk notice he drops the envelope. Why would he do that? Only to switch it. In the one example I saw I would say the sound when the envelope hits the desk suggests that it dropped further than the inch or so if it had landed on the top of the desk. He misdirects everyone with some math. Then picks up the substitute envelope which has the known two cards in it and then opens the envelope.
