Courtesy of the Clark Santee video archive, extraordinary footage of pre-fame James Taylor, aged just 21 when this was filmed, prior to the release of his all-conquering Sweet Baby James album in 1970 featuring this lesser-known masterpiece. A rare glimpse of a youthful James Taylor, who would soon win legions of fans the world over with thoughtful songs and unique laid-back singing style.

One of the single greatest performers guitarists singer/songwriters to ever live. He has such a soft demeanor and is such a sweet and caring person with an interesting outlook on life.

It just amazes me that someone has so much beauty inside like he has. I can't imagine life without James or Joni. They had such major part in my growing up to be the man that I am!

An all round excellent songwriter. Not just lyrically, but musically. Many people don't truly appreciate just how great James Taylor's guitar work is. He keeps it simple and to the point, but still adds some spice to his playing with those little fills he does. The tone on that old Gibson J-50 of his remains unmatched in my opinion.

You got that right, on every point! I have never heard another guitar player that gets this same guitar sound, especially in the bass notes, which are deep and crisp, yes mostly due to the guitar, but something to do with the way his thumb grabs and releases each note in a crisp fashion. I have never heard anyone else get this same bass sound. I notice JT plays his Gibson here tuned down almost a full tone, which enhances the bass even further.

@@DOBacousticguitarYes! Its such an amazingly unique sound. I really believe its one of the reasons he was so successful, its such a calming sound!

I’ve always loved his picking style. Plays some unonventional fingerings, but it works. And his voice is just so perfect for the tones he plays with the music seeming to always fit the lyrics so the feel is just right. I hear he added where is that isn’t on the studio album which came later. This was one of those songs I fell in love with the first time I listened to the sweet baby James album and always wondered why it didn’t get as big as the other songs and all I could figure was it wasn’t long enough. Because it certainly has a beautiful sound for you and the lyrics are terrific it’s something everyone can relate to in their own way. Thanks for posting the video because I never heard this done live

Well said, although I think he has one of the least "simple" guitar styles of any of the '60s-'70s singer-songwriters, many of whom were strum-happy.

@@ptownscribe1254I have to agree with you on the point that his playing is less simple than a lot of other 70s artists. Hes definitely got some sweet guitar chops, I mostly meant it in the way that his playing isnt completely over the top. His guitar playing always seems to serve the song perfectly without going over showmanship-wise. Last year I dedicated so much time and effort into learning all of the songs from early on in his career, and it was an absolute challenge. Once you get it down its an absolute blast to play his stuff. I also bought a newer Gibson J-50 (60s model) nearly identical to the one he plays here and I tell you it sounds almost identical to his. He has become my favorite guitarist of all time HANDS DOWN. And definitely my favorite artist to cover while busking or doing live shows.

James dropped onto the scene fully formed. He was a great writer, singer and guitar player from day one.

Loved this treasure of a song from the first time I heard it back in 1970. Sweet Baby James was a comfort to me during the time I was claiming some sanity & foundation back into my life. Indeed like Heaven to me. Thanks James.😊 indeed a consummate musician, song crafter & deliverer all in one.

Wow! I love that song. James was so accomplished at a young age--songwriting, guitar style and that honeyed voice. Thanks for posting this! (The verse that starts with --There's a place inside of every man is not on the album cut.)

This is from the early days of PBS show that featured Rock and Folk stars of the day--word is he was very ill with the flu when he played this that night. What an incredible performance---I want to learn to play it on guitar now.

A very nice song in its infancy. The album version omitted one of the verses (“There’s a place inside every man…..”).

Think you so much for posting this and "Fire and Rain." I've never seen these before. It's great to hear JT with just his voice and guitar. And what a voice and guitar. Again, many thanks.
