UPDATE: This lecture has obviously hit a nerve. For Prof. Tour's response to his critics, see www.jmtour.com/wp-content/uplo.... Tour in his response apologizes for using the word "lying" with regard to Jack Szostak, but he goes on to explain in detail why his substantive criticisms of Szostak's article were correct. To read the criticisms leveled at Tour, see stonesnbones.blogspot.com/201....
Dr. Tour is one of the world’s top synthetic organic chemists. He has authored 680 scientific publications and holds more than 120 patents (here is a partial list). In 2014, Thomson Reuters named him one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds,” and in 2018 Clarivate Analytics recognized him as one of the world’s most highly cited researchers. Tour is also fearless. He joined more than a thousand other scientists in signing the “Scientific Dissent from Darwinism.” More recently, he has become a thorn in the side of the origin of life research community, offering blunt assessments of the current state of origin of life research. Proving the status quo wrong would do the trick... All he has to do is put is critizism into a scientific paper, have it peer reviewd and publishrd and here we go...well, that would be it if: His climd had any merit and if he did actually publish. What are they doing instead? He does the rounds of fundamentalist church groups, right wing talk radio, publish in church magazines and show up on and jesus-tv shows. "I am going after the people that do not read the scientific literature…..It's hard to publish my critiques because of peer review" -An actual thing that James Tour said without irony He knows his claims are bogus and he knows he can't pass the peer review pocess...because his claims are bogus. HE also knows that his scientifically illiterate flock does not care.

This was an excellent lecture. It reminds me of a passage in Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes 8:17 (KJV) "Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it."

27:37 "aminoacids don't hook together by themselves" This bit is the real kicker for me Despite my years of reading on this subject, I always had the impression that things will hook up if they bump into each other, and the design arguments mostly revolve around the improbability of such hook-ups happening in the necessary sequence. The idea that nucleotides have to be *forced* to hook up is quite an eye opener. It's like spending hours debating whether or not pigs can fly based on weight and aerodynamics and such, and then somebody saying "You know pigs don't have wings, right?"

@@jarrod752 Chemicals don't all respond to a similar input. Some chemicals bond under different temperatures, and you would need extreme contrasts to get the right sequence of events to build all the necessary molecules, and then to come together in one place, to order in the correct sequence without a single error (we're talking about many thousands of molecules that would just as willingly bond to the wrong thing at the wrong time indiscriminately or polymerize. And even IF you get some parts to form correctly through either human intervention or currently unknown natural processes, the cell doesn't just form complex information in DNA or with carbohydrates naturally in any sense. DNA, left to natural law would be a consistent order like ABAB or ABCABC. But no, DNA is A-symmetrical data and the problem of carbohydrates which have over a trillion ways to form indiscriminately, if one carbohydrate is wrong, the cell dies. Don't forget that the first hypothetical proto-cell has no enzymes to check itself for correct formation because it has never formed before. The cell would need to be completely formed and have all the information established before systems could be made to check and verify said information in the cell. Your comment reads of a person who has a magical perception of how science actually works. The "10 to the 79 billionth power" number for the complexity for interactomes in the cell is no joke. Scientists don't know how the first cell formed. It's untested, unverified speculation, and so far, our best technology, cleanest prepared chemicals, and smartest chemists have not managed to do more than forcibly produce individual molecular structures that are generally function-less on their own and don't resemble life. Also, you may want to check James Tour's credentials before you assume he doesn't know anything. The man is cited by more scientists in his respective field than Stephen Hawking in his respective field. He is one of the top scientific minds in modern chemistry.

@@jarrod752 are you a synthetic chemist? Do you think you know more about these chemical reactions than Dr Tour? You are wrong. These chemicals do not "combine rather easily." Actually they break down easily and are difficult to get to join together. The peptide bond joining 2 amino acids is a reversible reaction, and the reaction tends to break down thousands to millions of times faster than they form. The only way these bonds form in living cells is because of very complex enzymes.

The heart pumbs blood....It is the mind that rejects the notion od some ill-defined deity, which appparently is not subject to the known laws of physics, that supposingly interacts with the fabric of our reality in ways that have thus far eluded every controlled experiment ever performed in the history of science. And there is the major flaw in this video - Tour repeated time and again "we don't know" and yet there you are with "we DO know" There is NO place in science for religion EXCEPT where you have a real need to reinforce your own belief. I can appreciate all Tour's views without the need to insist on a nebulous and unproven deity; I do not have the hubris to think that if there existed an incomprehensible "entity" I would know what its plan and thoughts are!

Back in my early IT days (around 1980) there was a phrase that was used often. "I understand you in principle." When communicating with another programmer/hardware tech, it was common to reach a point in their explanation of something where that statement was appropriate. Basically, it meant that you were able to follow what they were saying, in general, without being able to grasp all the finer points of the concept. What a joy it was to watch this presentation! Mr. Tour does an amazing job of keeping things at a level that a layman like me can grasp "in principle."

Dr. Tour takes the right approach. You don't start with Evolution, you start with how did life come from non-life. This stops the Humanist scientific establishment dead in their tracks.

Ive been athiest for decades, used to be a memeber of an athiest group until they got me kicked out. I was banned. These explains the small world that proves God. I explain the infinite world to prove God. Thanks lord, my knowledge saved me from bigotry of athiesm. Mine is not just a faith, its a diction if our reality. I am thankful to hear this guy. This broaden my knowledge

This is terrific! Thank you, James Tour and DiscoveryNews for putting it up. Makes so much sense and exposes the garbage some scientists want us to buy. I like his boldness and holding to truth. The last 5 minutes alone are worth the video.

My kids are still in elementary school but I started teaching apologetics to them years ago. Apologetics is the vaccine against the crap that is Darwinian evolutionary theory. I am my kids pastor and it is my job to prepare them against the lies of this world. Because we started young with Bible teaching every night, they got saved young.

I have a degree in chemistry as well but this guy is on a whole different level and a terrific chemist. He is the kind of guy, because of his intelligence, always ruined the chance of a “curve” for the rest of us. I envy his enthusiasm and professional ethic. As far as chemistry, you can take what he is saying to the bank. I’m impressed by his knowledge of the topic.

Intelligent design is real. It's real science. Unfortunately, many believers of intelligent design aren't articulate. The believers of evolution are often articulate, but what they have is just a fairlytale and they are easily debunked. We need more people like Tour.

Usually in labs atoms need extreme conditions to make a simple change....meanwhile my body cells are quitely operation millions of complex reactions below 37°C and under normal atmospheric pressure.... Yes. Another God fearing scientist to make all of us proud. We are so proud of you.

He's the most cited scientist on earth by other sciences, pertaining to the subjects he's lecturing on. If you search google scholar, which ranks the most cited people in every field of study in the history of science, he is ahead of people like Stephen Hawking.

An old joke; a group of scientists presented themselves before the creator of the universe, stating we can now create life! G-D responded, demonstrate please. the group then proceeded to prepare their materials. G-D said wait get your own dirt!

He speaks LIKE he knows what he is talking about. He is not a biochemist and they have done many of the things he claims cannot be done.

I had to study organic chemistry when I was in college. I used to have propulsive diarrhea before exams. It was horribly difficult (for me.) And in organic lab, I struggled to make a few grains of aspirin. I used to be an atheist, but "fine tuning" hit me like a sledge hammer. So did protein synthesis and folding. I can tell you this: Dr. Tour is a genius for his understanding of organic chemistry. I know just enough about it to know how DIFFICULT it is. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

As a Muslim, I totally agree Mr Tour. Our scientists are the same opinion. Unfortunately some pseudo scientists are just copy and don't make any effort to understand. But not to forget that there are many professors on university are forced to not deny the evolution theory otherwise they will dismissed. So the best thing to do is to show them how wrong they are.

I am a civil engineer with some common sense, however, with a very small understanding of chemistry and biology, I'm totally lost listening to this lecture. But I can tell by reading some of the comments here, and knowing of his love of the LORD, I'm convinced of his uniqueness and honesty. Amazing that someone can converse with such ease about very complex things.
