This so awesome, man. Incredible kindness from Jim and Rich but there's no one more deserving of it. You actually inspired me to get my first Tyler after seeing you play a maple neck blue classic through a pair of Matchless amps on a Crystal Lewis DVD- still one of the best tones I've ever heard!
It’s the secret weapon! Tyler straight into an Avalon preamp, straight into the board for clean with the mid boost turned on but at minimum.... crystalline unique cleans nothing else can do.
Very cool jam. The first time I saw a James Tyler was when Mike Caswell played one years ago. God rest his soul. I'm definitely going to figure out that progression.
I have a BW2K and it blows my mind every time I pick it up to play. My Tyler also has the same exact pups as yours, two 5500s in the neck and middle and a super in the bridge. Mine is made of mamywo though and it's got some aggressive mids! I love it!!!! I can dial the action down so damn low and it doesn't even buzz! F-ing amazing in every way! Oh, and I love the headstock!!!
A rad guitar for a rad dude. Huff is always who I think of. All these years going to NAMM and I've never tried one of these even though I've wanted to. Sounds great buddy.
Huge thanks to James Tyler and Rich Renken for blessing this wonderful talented musician. It is nice to know that this kind of "gifting" still exists. Oh yeah, great sounding and beautiful guitar (and great playing)!
I just bough a Black Classic 2 weeks ago after dreaming of a Tyler literally for 15 years: Amazing guitar, absolutely in love! Congrats on your new guitar!
Back in the day, I used to see Landau play all the time at the Baked Potato in the Los Angeles area. Shawn’s opening chord progression definitely reminded me of Landau!
Congrats! Your playing is just awesome and pops further with the ability you`ve got about the active boost. I still and will continue to dream about a James Tyler happening some day
First, your playing is so tasteful and so fluid, it's allways a pleasure to listen to your demos. Probably that's what the people at Tyler did too. They listened and they send you this instrument made famous by the great Dan Huff and Mike Landau. Tyler is right! Every great pro musician must play a Tyler Guitar. And that's especially true for you. No matter if one can afford it or not. Congratulation.
Wow buddy. Bless you dude! HSS is without a doubt the way to go for me. I haven't chimed in for a while but that guitar is reason enough........and of course I love ya bro! Peace and stay strong Shawn. It's gettin' rough out here but we KNOW WHO calls the shots!
10-12" radius sounds wonderful. I have really grown accustomed to the Anderson 12-14" over the years so I would be right at home, I think. I really need to get a Tyler soon.
U maybe blessed Shawn...but u earned it too bro..its in any lesser known guitar co. best interest to have u representing. Your brand has proven view time value, and all the fans of your playing know it.
Hi Shawn. From Japan. I made a comment perhaps nearly 2years ago and got your kind response. Excited to see James Tyler..! I am 56. I first recognized Michael when “Maxus” released their first (and last…) debut album in the early 80’s. I was a high school kid playing “ARIA“ guitar. Then, saw James Tyler when he released his first solo “Tales from the bulge”. He had the famous “vomit” paint? guitar. I saw him at the Boz Scaggs concert with Carlos Vega on the drum and Neil S.(on bass). It was sort of a “festival” type of concert, so, Joe Walsh Band and Michael McDonald Band were there with young Robben Ford on Guitar..!!! I recall he played a Strat..! He shredded a lot. Haha.. I own a guitar from Peter Skermetta. I believe he was one of the luthiers at James Tyler. I found his prototype on Ebay probably almost a decade ago and did my own research a bit and took a chance. The serial number is 10101… . Sent email to Peter and he confirmed that it is his creation. Looks like he inherited a DNA from James Tyler and the rolled-up fretwork is excellent..!!! I am spoiled… It is so comfortable and I first thought I got a shorter scale neck, but it is full Fender size. By the way, James Tyler has its own MIJ product line, too. Maybe, Tom Anderson, next..?
I’ve been eyeing James Tyler guitars for a while. This one sounds great! I can tell you had fun with it in this video.. inspiring video for sure, Shawn!
Congratulation Shawn! that´s a great guitar and those Michael Landau approuch make me remind when he used these guitars ... More Videos/demos with these Tyler Guitar...
Great demo, the tone and feel are both awesome. 🙌🏻 loving all of the comments about the headstock and it’s great that we have such a diversity of guitars to choose from as guitarists these days.
So happy you were offered that guitar! What a great story. Lovely instrument of superior quality that sounds great through your setup. You’re essentially paying for a bespoke Strat with this kind of guitar (or a Fender Masterbuilt, Tom Anderson, Hahn, LSL, Suhr custom, etc...). There’s a pride in ownership, like a Saville Row tailored suit, even though there’s arguably not a $2500 difference the way it sounds or plays between this kind of boutique guitar and an off the rack MIM Strat or Schecter (reflecting how good the factories have gotten overseas rather then a decline in American made guitars). That great rolled fretwork would be unlikely with a stock medium priced guitar, although you can find some.
Yes Brotahtoe...just, yes. Mid boost for tracking leads-judge it by the sound of how it tracks and not in the room, and try it with Dumble type tones! Awesome.
well done Shawn ...great intro, great playing, great tones and ...yes ...I guess this a very intriguing guitar...I like it and I'll have a proper look about it.
I was in a lucky position to get one for not much money many yrs ago. I also play Tom Anderson. The TA is like a well build Porsche 911, the Tyler is like a Chrysler V10 Viper.
Your choice of saddles is perfect. What players do not know is they are the only saddles that do not slide when you bend or do vibrato. The downward pressure from the string in effect makes them spread out and in effect lock. Because they have such little mass your sustain and tone comes from the wood not the saddle.Of course the irony is even the best ones are a fraction of the cost of the so called best. These 'best' are the best on a plywood body because all the tone and sustain is nothing but the bridge. NOTE: Leo was well aware of all this and was pissed when the marketers at Fender changed them. Trev Wilkinson did his own tests. He too found the same thing.
Really nice playing and the guitar sounds superb. I would use the button for lead work, then take it off for rhythm playing. Having a boost right there on the guitar is nice.
Great video Shawn and love the guitar. I have a P90 Variax lp style gold top designed by James that I never use as a variax but love the 59 neck feel and the p90 sound. The active at basically no volume boost kinda reminds me of a transparent always on kinda thing, like using a super light compressor or a tc spark or something. Keep making these great videos! I picked up a D20 after much consideration and watching all your vids! Absolutely loving it!
If I could afford it I'd have a SE Burning Water for sure. and a R0 Murphy Lab medium aged for good measure. Greg Koch always says that Tyler are simply the best, and The Gristle sure knows his shit. I"m very happy for you having this baby. she is sure an extraordinary girl. Well done Shawn!!
I'm sincerely surprised by the quality of the sounds, its playability (I trust you on this point) and the extreme versatility of this guitar. I didn't know. One can pair this with a good sounding versatile amp and for plenty of occasions you'd be good to go. I mean, I use a one trick pony guitar and an amp to match that description, so I need a bunch of gain pedals to color my sounds and help me with the dynamics. You have it all covered. I'm impressed! Please don't take this bad, but I always felt like James Tyler could sell at least twice as many guitars if he would only change the shape of that headstock. I can't be the only one who fails to see the beauty of its design. However stupid it may seem, it's probably the only reason why I've never been tempted to pick one up. I'm sorry, it ain't personal. Besides, just as you can make every guitar sound good, you can also make every guitar LOOK good. 😁 And man, I love your fusion licks! ❤️
I'm not offended at all about the fact that you take issue with the headstock on a Tyler. I'm not at all at odds with the design but it's certainly up to the individual. Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words.
@@ShawnTubbs I think the headstock is cool. Why have a special guitar that doesn't make a statement? I have a 1954 Airline Stratotone Dublet in bright yellow. I love watching other players drop when it removes the back wall of a club thru my Plexi :-) My 59 Reissue LP can't do that.
@@zachtheguitarmaniac ; It’s okay. It’s just a matter of taste. I read the comments and I didn’t see any complaints about the headstock. It’s not that important. I know plenty of people who hate the shape of a telecaster headstock. I happen to think those are beautiful.
Great playing as always. I've always thought Tylers were super 'vibey'. I have even had warm exchanges of opinion with people about the headstocks which I personally really like. Congratulations to you. I only wish it were psychedelic vomit. That'd give your D'addario t-shirt something to think about. Hahahahahaha
Sounds great Shawn. The solid color makes me feel better about my choice of a Vintage Silver Tyler 😂! I always thought maybe I was missing out on the funky finishes! And nobody on any gig I’ve played it on has ever commented on the headstock. Guitar players can be weird sometimes.
Dear Wizard of the fretboard, Please bestow your magic touch upon me. This muggle is lacking in thy power. Anywho, your trem work is perfect. Reminds me allot of Beck but with that sweet decorum of Landau.
Actually it’s not the fret edges that are rolled, it’s the *fretboard* edges that are slightly scalloped. I like it a lot. I have a BW2K and I find the mid boost ckt the best on clean tones. Drive tones can be good too but just a touch is all I can use before it gets too muddy. Love my Tyler!! I even love the headstock!! Hahaha 🤣🤣
Yes, I realized that I repeatedly said "fret edges" as opposed to "fretboard" edges. I assumed most would figure it out. Thanks for watching Larry and for chiming in!
Nice gesture from Tyler ! You deserve it ;-) Quite a breathtaking instrument tonewise and the matched headstock looks much less quirky than the natural one :) 59 profile and rolled fret edges: Home run !! The boost circuit is handy, but I rather use the one I have on my always on pedal (Super-Signa Drive by CmatMods...)
