The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large infrared observatory that was launched on December 25, 2021, and is now orbiting the Sun about 1 million miles from Earth. It is a premier observatory with an approximately 6.5-meter primary mirror, making it the largest optical telescope in space. The telescope is named after James E. Webb, who was the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. The JWST is an international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency. Its main goals are to complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, with longer wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity, and to study every phase in the history of our Universe, ranging from the first luminous glows after the Big Bang to the formation of solar systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth, to the evolution of our own Solar System.
