I'm not an expert but fans are clapping to the sound waves coming from the speakers. These sound waves take longer time to reach fans' ears as they need to travel much further than the sound waves coming from James' in-ear monitors.
These guys...for whatever theyve since become...meant a lot to me when I was a teenager and an angry young man for years. So for that...I always thank them.

Age is relative. I'm 54 now and I remember that there were times when I was 16 that I felt older than I actually am today. There are days when I still feel like a teenager, and then there are days when I feel like a 300 years old vampyre. But the important thing is: I still feel ALIVE and constantly changing and adapting. There are no constants in this life - except for change, which is the only constant factor. When it comes to James Hetfield and Metallica: Read their lyrics. Listen to their music. Listen to how James CHANGED interpreting his own work over the decades in the tiniest of nuances... But the soul of it all is still valid, and he is still passing on his own experiences and emotions. He's grown significantly over the decades, and his message is still just fabulous.
It's heartbreaking to see how hard it is after almost 40yrs to talk about Cliff. James trying to hold the tears, kirk had also tears in his eyes 😢. This is so sad but also remarkable that they remember him at every show. Love metallica so much. ❤
