What a joy to watch you knit. I love the different cast on methods and the live edge… well what a cool skill to learn. Your video has convinced me that I really need to try a knitting belt. What a wonderful video. A treasure of information!

Thank you for showing me how to use the knitting belt, Hazel! I appreciate you demonstrating the details of explaining everything in dept,h from the angle of your right arm, relieving the weight of the knitting on the left needle to avoiding the gap between needles. I feel so much more confident in using my belt. BTW, my tension has dramatically improved even with just making swatches using my belt. 😄🌈🌼

I knew of knitting belts but never knew of adding the string to take the weight off your left hand. (Been knitting for around 50 yes. I’m 58) I knit with the left needle under my arm so like with the belt don’t hold it but manoeuvre it a bit when knitting. But I have arthritis so may be an idea to get a knitting belt and use the string idea. Great tip ❤

A very informative video, i have done a lot of the provisional cast on with making shawls and there are a few other methods but any decent knitter will know that. I have never tried a belt myself but most of my work is on very long circular needles. I may try a belt when i next get onto very long double ended needles as i can see the benefits.

Thanks for a great video….. I learnt to knit when very young between my mother, aunt, grandmothers when I was about 7…. Now in my 40s and I still love learning new techniques and watching other knitters. It’s funny that a lot of my self taught knitting I now teach my mother, such as the long tail cast on, picking up knitted in edges with a crochet hook, correcting sections in lace knitting rather than pulling back (now that was a revelation for me 😊) I’m now starting to teach myself how to knit under-arm/with a belt.
@terrywynn9767

Excellent. I have both your DVDs but this is especially helpful. Thank you. I cheat a bit on long tail cast on. If I find I'm a bit short, I do a yarn over before my regular cast on stitch. Keeps it still nice and loose and that person on the galloping horse can't find it after you knit a row or two.

Thank you Hazel for your wonderfully clear tips. I loved seeing the economy of movement that you and many other Shetland knitters achieve. My older sister taught me to knit "throwing" when I was five. I forever let go with my right hand to loop the stitches tucking the needle under my elbow to keep it from falling! What a difference a Shetland teacher would have made! Thanks from the USA.

My mind is blown watching you knit a circular sweater ***with only three needles***. I usually spread over four and knit with a fifth, and I was so confused why my long double points to try with a knitting belt only came in pack of four. I guess that actually is one extra instead of one short!

This was so interesting Hazel. I’m 71 and my mother taught me the thumb method of casting on. Until today, I never realised it was the same thing as the long tail cast on with one hand, which always looks so fancy and complicated. I was taught the two needle method at school and hated it because it always turned out loose and untidy. Now I see there is a purpose for it in lace knitting! I also learned to knit with long needles, one tucked under my right arm, but as I got older I found my left shoulder would start to ache. The belt would probably help with this…and the tip about tying your knitting to the belt makes so much sense. Great tutorial. 😁
@hazeltindall

That’s good to know! Long tail was the only one I knew for many years. Two needle seems to take so long but is good for lace.
@cyndylee544
@cyndylee544 2 года назад
My mother taught me the thumb method of casting on as well. I have learned to do it on one hand now, but I really prefer the thumb method because when you do it all on one hand the yarn untwists on the tail, but it does not do that when you do the thumb method. So I prefer the tail yarn NOT to untwist. So I think the thumb method is better for that reason. Just something I observed from doing both ways.
