Today, January 16th, is the birthday of Dean W. Beachy. He would be 67 but died in the 2019 State College shooting. A farmer, horse trader, and auctioneer, he was highly respected among his peers. A fellow auctioneer described Dean’s ability to “make others feel special and accepted” and be “heartfelt and purposeful in reaching out to others.” As one journalist wrote, “many people will never know what it is like to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Dean Beachy seemed to live [it] daily.”
Dean and his youngest son were in town for a horse auction. Because they were the kind of people who would never stand by and let harm come to someone else, they intervened when the shooter suddenly attacked his ex-girlfriend, shooting her in the chest once before they could reach him. Both Dean and his son died of their wounds, but the young lady they defended survived despite significant injuries.
The shooter killed a total of 3 innocent bystanders before killing himself at a nearby home.
Of note, if an abusive partner has access to guns, a woman is 5x more likely to be killed.
