The concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964.
The little old lady from Pasadena
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Has a pretty little flower bed of white gardenias
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
But parked in her rickety old garage
Is a brand new shiny red Super Stock Dodge
And everybody's saying that there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's the terror of Colorado Boulevard
It's the little old lady from Pasadena
If you see her on the street don't try to choose her
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
You might drive a goer but you'll never lose her
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Well, she's gonna get a ticket now sooner or later
'Cause she can't keep her foot off the accelerator
And everybody's saying that there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's a terror of Colorado Boulevard
It's the little old lady from Pasadena
~Instrumental~
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
~Instrumental~
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
The guys come to race her from miles around
But she'll give 'em a length then she'll shut 'em down
And everybody's saying that there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's a terror out on Colorado Boulevard

The are singing about a1964 Super Stock Automatic 426 Max Wedge capable of 11 second 125 mph quarter mile times. I was 14 when this song came out and a rabid Chrysler and drag racing fan.

What killed this fun time was when long hair free love drugs and Woodstock all 50s style and music went to hell in a hand basket and rebellion and going against the establishment was in and music changed just ask Gary Lewis he went to Vietnam in 1966 came home in 1969 and this music was gone so he opened a record store in California

@@sheddski2942 Unfortunately what's going on today is even worse. This world is out of control and totally dysfunctional in every way shape and form. And it will ultimately lead to our demise. Well, not mine because I'll be dead by then. However, this current generation is in for a rude awakening down the line. Let's disarm the police, let men use the ladies room, and let women use the men's room. Better yet, leave birth certificates blank until the child is old enough to determine what sex it identifies with 😂 I'm laughing, only it's not a joke. Those are the kinds of things this generation is proposing. Good luck snowflakes, don't say I didn't warn you when the s*** hits the fan.

Jan, and Dean, don't need the rock n roll hall of fame. Their fans lifted them to a greater glory. Jan's, comeback proved that. They had lives outside of music. Jan's, medical studies, and Dean's, degree in graphic design. I think Jan, found contentment being back on stage. Amazing men.

Big time. Along with the Beach Boys, they launched a musical genre. Started with surfing and smoothly morphed into wheeled vehicles (Sidewalk Surfin, 409). One of the most amazing things - most of their music was done as a hobby while they were students - Dean Torrance as, I believe, a USC undergrad and Jan Berry at UCLA Medical School. Jan Berry - Rest In Peace. Dean Torrance - Rock On.

Jan Berry is the guy who , amongst his other talents, was an early mentor to a young Brian Wilson, who gave Jan and Dean Torrence "Surf City" (much to the dismay of Murray Wilson). Dean had a butt kickin falsetto which you all hear here. They had some great tunes, and their work served as a great compliment to what Brian and the Beach Boys were doing. (Dean is also a pretty great artist, and came up with the Beach Boys logo, which they still use to this day.)(Dean also created a number of great album covers for different artists, as well )

The origins of "The Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)" stem from a hugely popular ad campaign that the Dodge automobile maker debuted in early 1964. Starring actress Kathryn Minner, the commercials showed the white haired elderly lady speeding down the street (and sometimes a drag strip) driving a modified Dodge. She would stop, look out the window and say "Put a Dodge in your garage, Hon-ey!". The song soon followed and she enjoyed great popularity until she died a few years later.

On this day in 1965 {July 15th} Jan and Dean performed "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" on the ABC-TV week-day afternoon program 'Where The Action Is'... Exactly one year earlier on July 15th, 1964 the song was at #6 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eleven days later on July 26th it would peak at #3 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for 11 weeks.... And on the same 'Action' show the duo also performed "Sidewalk Surfin'"; eight months earlier on November 29th, 1964 it reached #25 {for 2 weeks} on the Top 100... R.I.P to William 'Jan' Berry, who passed away on March 26th, 2004 at age 62 and 'Dean' Ormsby Torrence celebrated his 75th birthday this past March 10th {2015}...

From the T.A.M.I. Show, featuring most of Rock's top names of the time, and providing a record of how Southern California's youth looked in 1964. One of my favorite songs of all-time; I must have driven my parents half-crazy playing it so much on the hi-fi. I was such a fan of Jan and Dean, that I had my mother buy me a striped shirt like the ones they're wearing here. I was at Jan and Dean's "second" comeback concert (which really was their first true comeback--no lip-synching) at the Starwood on Santa Monica Blvd. around 1977. They came down a short stairwell, Jan using a cane. They were well-received, and Jan sang pretty darn well, considering how much damage his brain incurred in his 1966 car accident. Towards the close of Deadman's Curve, the music stopped, and Jan said, "I came back from Deadman's Curve," with the crowd going crazy. I had the chance to later see them in (appropriately) Pasadena for New Year's Eve and in my home town of Glendale at its yearly car show (as well as the honor to be part of their security team at another Glendale car show, which allowed me see them backstage).

Leon Russell wrote this song too! Love you kind Sir Leon! I got to see them in person (well after his car accident) at BE Bop Burgers [SADLY NO LONGER THERE ]in Santa Barbara, CA ... where I'd brought my cassette tape with that song on it. They signed their name onto my cassette tapes plastic container. Real nice guys they were. It's nostalgic for sure! This was around the late 1980'S...Ohhhhh how I'd give anything to have those days back again. I didn't know it would be years later my high school sweetheart husband would pass away from stage 4 Colon Cancer on our 39th Wedding Anniversary September 2nd, 2O12 [1973]. Such happy memories

I know I had a back n forth with someone here about the Beach Boys n Jan n Dean. Fact is, Jan Berry was a bit of a mentor to Brian in the early days. Dean Torrance has his place in R n R history with his art and that ass kickin falsetto that is ALSO featured on Barbara Ann from the Boys. I say that if there is enough love, which there is, put Jan n Dean in the Hall. its too exclusive as it is.

Isn't it interesting how what young people consider to be cool changes from generation to generation? Can you imagine any of today's singers standing there like that, bobbing up and down? The same is true for dance styles. From the Charleston to the Cha-cha to the Twist to the Snake to the writhing bouncing to the beat of house music, one era's alluring sexy moves becomes another era's laughing stock.

Jan & Dean were around for two years before the Beach Boys; they weren't knock offs in any way. By the time they first met Brian Wilson in 1962, Jan Berry already had two top-10 singles under his belt with two different partners, plus another one in the top-30. And he recorded both of those top-10 songs in his own garage--how many artists have done that? Brian and Jan wrote Surf City together. Berry was also producing his own records before Brian was.

As far as the basic structure of the song, yes, that’s Brian. But Jan wrote the musical arrangement and produced the sessions for Surf City. I’d say that makes it closer to 50-50.

Actually Brian Wilson co wrote Surf City along with Jan Berry. The B/B and J&D collaborated a time or two. Dean sang on Barbara Ann. As far as this performance, somebody was backing them up on the harmony. There is more than 2 voices going on in this video. It wouldn't surprise me if it was the B/Bs since they were at the same concert.

No.....they worked WITH the Beach Boys back then and they copied each other. You'll see Brian Wilson's name on some of Jan and Deans records and vice versa. They were all friends back then. "Jan and Brian Wilson collaborated on roughly a dozen hits and album cuts for Jan and Dean, including the number one national hit "Surf City" in 1963. [4] Subsequent top 10 hits included "Drag City" (#10, 1963), "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" (#3, 1964), and the eerily portentous "Dead Man's Curve" (#8, 1964)."

The Beach Boys were influenced a little bit by Jan and Dean's singing style when they started but Jan and Dean didn't sing songs about surfin' and cars until after the Beach Boys got big with it first and Jan became good friends with Brian Wilson who wrote "Surf City" for them in 1963. Before the Beach Boys had hits Jan and Dean sang songs about baby talk and covers of old songs like "Heart and Soul".

In 1963 when Jan Berry began collaborating in his songwriting with Brian Wilson, Jan & Dean took off to superstardom with numerous chard busting singles. Jan's falsetto and studio wizardry along with the excellent material made for great listening in the mid 60's. The best way to listen is by using the original mono releases. The complexity of Jan's production work is truly outstanding.
