Jan & Dean "A Day At The Beach" at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa, California on July 31, 1990. The show was scheduled to start at 4pm but was delayed about 90 minutes or so due to a delay in their flight or something. You can hear Dean say SORRY WE'RE LATE!

Much respect to Jan and his neverending courage to keep performing and to Dean for being by his side all those years. I think Dean did it for Jan. 💜

Dead Man's Curv really screwed Jan's nervous system but his determination to beat the odds is astounding. My favorite Jan and Dean record is 'Baby Talk'...but I love them ALL.... RIP Jan 🎙️😎 🎸 music 🎶

Let me tell you something. I saw Jan and Dean several times. And as the years would go by Jan was worsening physically. But it was always a good time. The very first time I saw them was 1984 in Scranton(Rocky Glen-Moosic.) The show was AMAZING. Something happened that night to Jan that was magic. The crowd was overflowing. The entire park was filled and the atmosphere was electric. Then it was like The Rock and Roll Gods came to Jan and took away all of any physical maladies. The man was on fire. No delayed speech or singing. Pure and often heavy Rock and Roll at a break neck pace. There were people there who didn't know their story or who they were. As the show went on the overall enthusiasm of the crowd intensified and the energy put Berry into another realm. The adrenaline healed him that night and he and Torrence put on the best rock show I ever saw. And I saw them all. It kills me that this duo is not in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I don't always agree with Paul Stanley from Kiss but he is on target when he says the rock and roll hall of fame is pure bullshit. Trust me, Jan and Dean were real and played HARD. They were rock stars in every right and deserve to be in the hall of fame. They truly earned it. It's time they get in!!!!!

I travelled 8 hours to Watertown, NY to see JAN & DEAN in concert in 1999. At that time it was getting to the point where Jan was really struggling physically and vocally, but still did a decent job considering everything and it was a really fun show overall! I met Jan at the autograph table after the show, and I spoke with him briefly and he signed my photo and my T-shirt. In those days Dean wasn't regularly coming out after the shows so I didn't meet him. I had tickets to see them in PA a few years later, but unfortunately the show got cancelled. Since that time I've seen Dean Torrence in concert a couple of times, performing with the SURF CITY ALLSTAR BAND. Just saw them earlier this year with Dean Torrence and David Marks (original member of the Beach Boys) as special guests. It was an especially good show! Even better than I was expecting!

Leigh Joel Fierman Totally awesome story ! I love reading stories like this. I've been a fan for years, heard them on the radio, but never got to see them except on RU-vid. Jan's is one of the best come-back stories there is. He was lucky to survive the crash, let alone get back on stage. Whenever I think about how far he was able to come back and do as well (and for so many years).....wow.... No doubt it wasn't always easy for him, but just from the videos I've seen, he was really out there for the fans. Yeah, it's sad that he couldn't do as well in the last few years, but all things considered, he was pretty lucky. Once again, all the determination and hard work he did to continue his career...wow.... Can't forget Dean for being a great friend, being there and keeping things going. Bless you Dean! Hope you get all the credit you deserve! They sure gave us alot of years of great music...

I had an identical experience at a Jan and Dean concert in 1985 in Orange County California. It was the best rock and roll show I ever saw! The crowd was going bananas. A whole group of people were making their wheelchairs jump up and down, dancing. I have never seen anything like it before or since. I got to see them a number of times after that, but the 1985 concert is something I never forgot.

I saw Jan & Dean in 1994 and after the show and after Dean had left Jan stayed and signed every last autograph. I have mine in a safety deposit box. Of all of my celebrity autographs that's the most precious one because I know what a friendly and determined guy he was. I know something about the power of sheer force of will and, my God, he had it.

Jan was one of our customers when I worked at Henry Radio in Los Angeles ca. 1970. At the time he was barely intelligible on the telephone, but he made incredible progress thereafter. He was like some stroke victims, who can sing but can't talk, can dance but can't walk, etc. Music is magical, and great for body, mind, and soul. I read that music excites the location of the speech center on the opposite side of the brain.
@galoon
@galoon 3 года назад
That's probably true about music helping the speech center of the brain; there's a lot about the brain that's still not fully understood by medical science. I've read that Jan first started receiving regular speech and physical therapy when he began attending Rancho Los Amigos Nat'l. Rehabilitation Center in Downey, CA in 1969--about the same time you knew him! Apparently Jan hadn't had any consistent, continuous treatment before then. Music really is awesome for the human body & spirit, that's for sure!

I saw these guys at a concert at Ontario Place Forum in Toronto just days before this California gig. I can tell you that it certainly wasn't T-shirt weather in Canada that day - all concert go-ers were mighty pleased that the venue had a roof to keep out the torrential rain !!!! Great conret tho - Jan & Dean were performing along with Martha Reeves & the Vandellas (including Dancing In the Streets !).

It is sad that the kids were wondering all around and they don't have an idea that they are watching history. I pray that they remember what they saw that day in 1990. I remember seeing the grand old opera stars when I was about the age of these kids.

To be fair, there was a sandy area set up in front of the stage (a makeshift beach). It was put there for the kids to enjoy during the afternoon show. The theme was A Day At The Beach...with J&D. So truth be told, the kids were doing what they were supposed to do, have fun! You can't see that from the camera's POV, but that's why the kids are all over the front of the stage. Others have made similar remarks, so this explanation is for everyone's benefit. Hopefully the kids remember that they were in the presence of rock legends!

I'd have to disagree with you on that one. While I agree that the name JAN & DEAN was essential for marketing purposes, Jan was an essential part of the duo even in the later years, and back in their days on Liberty Records Jan was arguably far more essential and did a whole lot more than Dean. It was also Jan's recovery and triumphant return to the stage that attracted many younger fans back in the 70's and 80's. It was quite cool to see the original 2 guys on stage performing live, after so many years and all that Jan went through. The shows they do nowadays with just Dean and the Surf City All-Stars (sometimes billed as The Jan & Dean Show) are really fun and nostalgic but there's definitely something essential missing without Jan being part of the show.

I've seen Jan & Dean 12 times starting back in the 70's. I would have been very disappointed seeing them at this venue. It looks like they're at a playground. All the kids running around completely ruins the integrity of the show. It's no wonder Dean looked annoyed like he just wanted it over as soon as possible, even looking at his watch at one point. The band members all looked the same way, annoyed and bored. This was the most lackluster performance I've ever seen from them.

Dean has said several times in interviews that he particularly loves the concerts at festivals, carnivals, beaches, and other family events. I really don't think he wanted it to be over with. Dean's whole routine of being bored, not wanting to sing "Linda", checking his watch, acting like he wants to leave...that's all part of the act and is meant for comedic purposes. It's supposed to be like Jan forces him to do these things that he doesn't want to do....which in their earlier years actually was the truth to a certain extent. But what you see on stage is all part of Dean's sense of humor and is part of the show. At times he has asked the audience why they clapped for a particular song when the know that it sucked! And it was a song Dean was singing lead on! Another time he said he was going to quiz the audience on things he said, and anyone who didn't answer it right would be forced to buy a T-shirt. The crowd always just laughed 😂!
