Jan Garbarek Group at MaiJazz Festival in Stavanger From Stavanger Concert Hall Jan Garbarek - saxophones, flute Rainer Brüninghaus - keyboards, Youri Daniel - bass, Trilok Gurtu - percussion.
No disagreement with that characterization, although I would avoid saying "the greatest" of anything where taste is involved. I consider him a soul mate.
I am a huge fan of Jan Garbarek, a jazz saxophonist of superb ability and almost otherworldly creativity. I first discovered him in the mid-1980s when I was convinced by a friend to purchase an album called Folk Songs that Jan had recorded with American jazz bassist/composer Charlie Haden and Brazillian guitarist/pianist/composer Egberto Gizmonti. I won't say that album changed my life but it opened doors and windows to musical expressions and styles that were new and very exciting and introduced me to some exquisite musical talent. It is still among my top 3 favourite albums. In this video, the Jan Garbarek group, which (at the time) included Jan Garbarek on saxophones/flute, Rainer Brüninghaus on keyboards, Youri Daniel playing bass, and the unbelievable Trilok Gurtu on percussion is probably the greatest display of musicality, rhythm, creativity, and dynamic composition that I have yet to and, likely, ever will, witness. 💖❤💗❤🙏
Jan Garbarek and Charlie Mariano are my favorite saxophonists of all times. And they both played with Reiner Bruninhaus (Reiner and Lyle Mays are my favorite pianists) and Eberhard Weber (my favorite bassist). Such talent! Jan has the ability to convey deep emotions unlike other players. This is good stuff here.
Nice to know a listener like you is here. I’m a lone woman who has known this music since I was in my mid twenties. Never found a friend to go to Garbarek concerts with. Been listening to Mays since the 80s.
Beautifull concert. Jan Garbarek is doubtless one of the best saxplayers of this time, with his own sound and expression. Trilok Gurtu is another unique genius.

I'm a woodwind player...my guy is Brecker....but Jan ...he's a...odd duck to me. This is not meant as an insult but a Compliment. For I'm one as well. I'd like to hear them play Baritone tho. With Metal Mouthpiece... I love Paul Desmond n Gerry Mulligan...in fact I've THE ALBUM with them playing together. They read each other so well. The Dave Brubeck Quartet....? Fuckin Hell...they changed my life. And Many Others
