The beginning of January is known in Portugal for new year carols called "Janeiras", which take place between the 1st and the 6th of January, the latter known as Kings’ Night, and sometimes confused with the carols in commemoration of the arrival of the three kings. This carol presented here, is traditionally sung on the day of the Circumcision of Jesus (narrated in the Gospel of Luke, 2:21), and celebrated by the Catholic Church on the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus (1st of January, but more recently on the 3rd of January). At night, during the New Year's Eve or Three Kings' Eve, groups of children and adults with musical instruments go around to people's doors wishing for a new year and "asking for the Janeiras", by chanting various songs, either traditional verses or improvised on the spur of the moment, from whom they hope to obtain a reward (leftovers from the rich Christmas nights, cakes, souvenirs, money).
As for the origins of the Janeiras, they take their name from January and, in turn, from Janus, a deity widely worshipped by the Romans at this time of year, from whom they asked for luck in the future. Janus was the god of changes and transitions and was generally represented as having two faces. In fact, his image and functions became associated with the concept of New Year's Eve. The Portuguese "Janeiras", meanwhile Christianised with carols mainly sung to baby Jesus, derive from these Roman "Saturnalia" and "Strenna", where the return to the Earth's solar cycle was welcomed. The Janeiras were even eradicated from the city of Lisbon and its surroundings because they were pagan remnants in a country that had already been Christianised. In the countryside, however, the tradition never faded.
Nowadays, Janeiras are sung all over the country, including on the islands of the Azores and Madeira. In Algarve, they are called "Charolas" and are sung accompanied by castanets. The Alentejo provinces, on the other hand, seem to be enjoying a recent return to this tradition, with Janeiras having a cross over with "Cante Alentejano". Finally, in the north of the country, particularly in the Minho region, the Janeiras take on their most popular character, turning bohemian and extrovert.

O início do mês de Janeiro é conhecido em Portugal pelos cânticos de peditório que se fazem de porta em porta, chamadas de "Janeiras", que se realizam entre o dia 1 e o dia 6 de janeiro, este último conhecido como Dia de Reis, sendo por vezes confundidas com os Cantos dos Reis ou "Reisadas". Este canto das Janeiras aqui apresentado, era cantado no dia da Circuncisão de Jesus (evento da vida de Jesus, narrado no Evangelho de Lucas, 2:21), que segundo a tradição da igreja católica é celebrada na Festa do Santíssimo Nome de Jesus a dia 1 de janeiro, e mais recentemente no dia 3 de janeiro. Na véspera de Ano Novo ou dos Reis, durante a noite, grupos de crianças e adultos com instrumentos de música, vão pelas portas das pessoas "pedir as Janeiras", entoando diversos cantos, a quem esperam obter algumas dádivas. Os cantos são já romances ou estrofes tradicionais, muitas vezes improvisos do momento, ou então trovas clichés que se acomodam simplesmente às pessoas. Então, para além das Janeiras serem entoadas como desejo de bom ano, também se pede uma recompensa (sobras das noites abastadas de Natal, bolos, lembranças, dinheiro).
Quanto à sua origem, as Janeiras vão buscar o seu nome a Janeiro, e por sua vez, o Jano, uma deidade bastante cultuada pelos romanos nesta altura do ano, a quem se pedia sorte para o porvir. Jano era o Deus das mudanças e transições, sendo geralmente representado como tendo duas faces. Com efeito, a sua imagem e funções passou, na prática, à ideia de passagem de ano. As Janeiras portuguesas, entretanto cristianizadas com canções na sua maioria ao menino Jesus, derivam destas "Saturnais" e "Strennas" romanas, onde o regresso ao ciclo solar da Terra era saudado. As Janeiras chegaram mesmo a ser erradicadas da cidade de Lisboa e arredores por se tratarem de resquícios pagãos num país já definitivamente cristianizado. No campo, contudo, a tradição nunca desvaneceu.
Hoje em dia, as Janeiras são cantadas por todo o país, incluindo nas ilhas dos Açores e Madeira. No Algarve, dá-se o nome de "Charolas", sendo cantadas acompanhadas por castanholas. As províncias alentejanas, por sua vez, parecem gozar de um recente regresso a esta tradição, parecendo haver um cruzamento das Janeiras com o "Cante Alentejano". Por fim, o Norte do país, salientando a zona do Minho, as Janeiras adquirem o seu carácter mais popular, tornando-se boémias e extrovertidas.
