On this episode of IRL, Angie Martinez is joined by Janelle Monae to discuss her quest for joy, learning to trust your gut, and humbly letting go of past versions of yourself. She is leaving perfectionism behind and making art that honors exactly who she is, at this moment, a free-ass mutha fucka.
With a lot of fodder about Janelle’s current behavior and wardrobe choices, Janelle gets to the root of her choices to celebrate her, her body, and her decisions. She’s not into respectability politics and lets you know why.
Janelle is showing up for herself, breaking the chains of respectability politics, and on an empowering journey toward personal liberation.
Tune in and discover the true meaning of freedom with Janelle Monae here on The IRL Podcast - where real-life stories unfold.

Janelle Monae is one of those artists that comes around every blue moon, she doesn't have to say too much, but embodies everything she speaks on. I've always been inspired by her. I needed this! The respectability part resonated. I’m 32 (33 in 2 days) and I’ve held back so much in my life because of other peoples expectations, judgements, ideas of who I should be. I should and demand to be respected from here on out. How I dress and what I do does not define me. Thank you Angie and Janelle. ❤

Janelle always gives amazing thought provoking interviews. IRL was the perfect podcast to come on because Angie isn't doing the interview to create a headline. I hope IRL goes on for many years to come. Angie's interview style with her guest is the reason I keep watching. I also enjoy that it doesn't feel like an interview because Angie doesn't ask just surface level questions; she makes you feel comfortable enough to be yourself and have an honest conversation, with no judgement.

I found the background to the photo shoot very enlightening. I read an interview years ago by a photographer who photographed Janelle for a series called Interview Without Words, which appeared in a major German newspaper. His experience with Janelle Monae did not match my impression of her from interviews and her art. His experience was similar to the one already described. now I can understand it and see where it comes from and understand the motivations. Which I'm glad about. And I think it's great that she takes responsibility and opens up to others. I can learn a lot from that.

"I got really intentional....In the middle of all of the mess thats going on in the world, make your beauty." Let me tell you the peace in this space and along this type of journey, OVER LOVE!! THEN, Angie expresses the judgement that occurs, yet there's a realization that begans to transforms one into... I love how Angie allows an Artist to express their thought without approving or agreeing or challenging their statement, she allowed Janelle to share her pure thought. #ElectricLady #OverLove

EPIPHANY: YES JANELLE. The light bulb just went off when she mentioned the part about it NOT being about perfection from the get-go BUT it being more about seeing the steps 🪜, the process of how one reaches being great, behind the scenes, imperfections, the work that goes into reaching your highest level, about improving, about pushing forward, not throwing in the towel, & more (I paraphrased 😊 but still captured the message)
